Because of the Physics aspects of this subject, there may be a better forum for it here, so please move if desired.

With my non-physics eye, this does seem to be of some importance relative to things we need to know, and need to consider, in application research of planetary "stuff"!!

It will be interesting to see the comments from you here who are deep into this kind of stuff

“Zebra Stripes” Structure Discovered In Earth’s Inner Radiation Belt

Scientists have discovered a new, persistent structure in Earth’s inner radiation belt using data from the twin NASA Van Allen Probes spacecraft. Most surprisingly, this structure is produced by the slow rotation of Earth, previously considered incapable of affecting the motion of radiation belt particles, which have velocities approaching the speed of light.

An NJIT physicist is a collaborator in the discovery of a new structure in Earth’s inner radiation belt — a zebra-striped structure of highly energized electrons that could endanger humans in space and also damage low-earth navigation and communication satellites.

“This is another fundamental understanding made possible thanks to the highly detailed data being returned from these remarkable spacecraft,” said Louis Lanzerotti, distinguished research professor of physics at the Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, principal investigator for RBSPICE, and a co-author on the paper.

“This finding tells us something new and important about how the universe operates,” said Barry Mauk of APL, Van Allen Probes project scientist and an author of the paper. “The new results reveal a new large-scale physical mechanism that can be important for planetary radiation belts throughout the solar system.

This information has been presented in the Nature Journal released on March 20, 2014.

In a way, I am "bumping" this, but.......................is this discovery of an unknown physical fact so mundane that it means nothing to the research guys here, or what. I am just surprised that this such did not motivate anyone thus far to even initiate some discussion on it. This certainly does seem to be very motivational for the science guys that made the discovery, and I am still wondering what are the potentials for this expanding or impacting any of the areas being researched or considered for research here??    ;D

Rdunk,

I am glad you bumped this, I had found some interesting
info to comment with!

Quote
It is because of the unprecedented high energy and temporal resolution of our energetic particle experiment, RBSPICE, that we now understand that the inner belt electrons are, in fact, always organized in zebra patterns,” said Aleksandr Ukhorskiy of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md., co-investigator on RBSPICE and lead author of the paper. “Furthermore, our modeling clearly identifies Earth’s rotation as the mechanism creating these patterns. It is truly humbling, as a theoretician, to see how quickly new data can change our understanding of physical properties.”

That is awesome in that we are always finding new
information about the earth, and our universe!

Thanks bts! In looking through your posted additions, my curiosity is further reinforced relative to this newly found reality. That is partially because some of their comments specifically address new findings relative to, “The new results reveal a new large-scale physical mechanism that can be important for planetary radiation belts throughout the solar system.

One interesting point is they admit being wrong with certain assumptions science has previously made regarding just how all of this "works"! :)

Yes indeed, and also very interesting as it relates
to the slow rotation of the earth.

Indicating, there may be many planets out there,
but then maybe again none quite like earth it
all its uniqueness, which we are just beginning
to fully understand.

I simply wonder if there is any type of energy in these "radiation belts" that we could, with technology, tap into for Earth surface power needs, as well as for space related power needs????????

Maybe there is some other sources of "free energy" hiding in this room somewhere!! :))
