Would Anyone Buy A 3D Printed Atlantis from StarGate ?
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:02:03 PM »
I printed a model at work the other day which seem's to resemble this video ;)

The .stl file can be found on thingyverse, luckily i could scale down the model to a size that worked for marketing and commercial purpose's.

I would love to see the full scale model though as it is almost a meter along the base (x.y) for you cad nerds :P

In a hot minute!

Is this masterpiece from an artist's rendering and the computer takes it from there?
Not exactly up on this science and would like to know
what it takes from concept to finished product.

Is Dubai the 'new' Atlantis?  :P

Hey Thor, even though the model I have is all white due to the printing process, it is still damn cool mate!

Pic's tommorow !

The reason its cool is that its related to a scifi show that some of us call realitly television, and well its a model you can hold in your hands!

Ok after rooting around like a snake with my head chopped off last night looking for, my gps watch charging cable, camera??? and my gerber.  I finally got my act together for some pics of Atlantis!

Here's Atlantis from SG 3D printed in Nylon with a very old NASA Cap in the background (made in the USA Nasa Cap for size reference LOL):

It's quite hard to know without searching and emailing where this cad file came from mate as the person who uploaded the file said they got it from Turbosquid.  The uploader said it seem's it may be from the 3d file from TV serie's itself but thats kinda hard to know for sure as Sci-fi fans would put the time and effort in modelling such things!

I got the file from here:

It's LOVELY!

I want one!  (And some paint that sticks to nylon to brighten it up!)

Amy It is pretty cool !

I'm stuck to know how to make this other than white right now.  White is better than other 3d printing processes that may try and achieve colour prints.  Not many machines could achieve this reduced scale of print resolution.  The model should be a lot bigger than what scaled it to.  I lost some detail in the model compared to the CAD data but all the same the level of detail is much more than what the industry lead's people to believe what they will achieve at home.

I am kinda thinking it would be very cool if i was to pour a Clear UV resistant Poly-Urethane resin over the model tintned in blue.  The resin should have a long pot life to allow the model to not contain drips etc.

Hmm now I thinking :D

Gotta get some pic's of a model my friend at work threw in the bin of a T-Rex that I went a little nutz on a couple of days ago!  I turned a really good 3d printed model from a design award winner he threw into a bin? into a talked about model at work.  I made T-Rex look like he walked outta a Tar Pit and still wanted to Eat LOL

Ok that is my next pic series....

Tar Pit T-Rex :D

Beautifully done. :)

Not much of me did this apart from spend an hour or two on thingiverse on a friday night tearing my hair out in boredom trying to find a model to pack out a build in an SLS machine!

The person who did the CAD is the legend!   ;D

did u create  this model ? or do u have  rights to duplicate it? if so,,u could create a mould from it and cast i crystal clear resien ...any color or colors u wish. then one would be able to illuminate it with led base...that would b beautiful !

Hi, can you take a close up of the buildings so we can see the detail?

One nice job.....Is it about 30cm wide and 15 cm high?

How long does a part like that take to build up in the machine. 10 minutes or 10 hours?

These printers have come long way. Deuem wants one. I'm now very jealous.

Thanks for sharing your work. You mentioned if anyone wants to buy one. What is the cost, less shipping?

Hey guy's sorry I missed your post's... I was away in the mountains busting my body recently LOL

As to whether the model is roaylity free, I do not know.  I got the CAD file from Thingyverse and that website was bought out by Stratasys as far as I know.

-Dooey the one I printed was scaled down massively from the the original CAD file, so much so a lot of the fine detail did not survive. The Print I did can fit in a palm of a Man's hand.

Thanks for bumping this as I would dearly love to to see the full scale model built!

Thinking cap ON :D

Hi Thor,

As of now I have no chance in hell making this model again even for myself in full scale according to the CAD.

All I can mate is point you in the direction of the CAD file...which is free to download I might add and point you to a service which is pretty cheap in the USA.

The File is here:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:23382

You could try getting a quote from Shapeways:

http://www.shapeways.com/

As for now on my part even printing that micro version of the original CAD file is impossible.  To explain how hard it is for me right now since I initially made this post in regards to building models which are "interesting" at work...

A friend of mine at work is a well decorated designer who is amazing at modelling Dinosaur's.  You would think having a 1:1 scale Dinosaur Skeleton would be a good investment in term's of marketing for a 3D printing Company Right ?  This model my friend made will happen in 1:1 eventually... but its a pain in the arse right now trying to juggle it with paying job's as we are not allowed to run this model on it's own without paying job's in the same print.

If you have any questions regarding paying someone to print this and need help with the CAD file from thingiverse then please either post here or send me a private message and I will endeavor to help you out.

Like yourself, I also want the Full Scale 3D print of Atlantis...  :)
