Well, Portugal is south of most European countries, so we are southerners. :)

I'm not doubting you all mate but i found this curious:

Quote
Small garden fishes (peixinhos da horta). These are usually green beans covered with flour and egg and fried. Portuguese Jesuit missionaries used to eat them in Japan, where they became very popular and are now known as "tempura".

As ya know I'm quite familiar Ilha Formosa whic occured many a eon ago, so what you say make's sense! It's one of those thing's that make ya go WTF..hmm ok.  I visited Japan Last year and found that Noodle soup and Tempura is the national dish.  I also found it quite cheap compared to what i thought it would cost!

I just looked at this thread for the first time.  I could for the veggies and taters.  I would probably have an anaphylactic reaction to the octopus.  Anaphylaxis is why I can't eat calamari.  Snails and anchovies do not appeal to me.  I tried anchovies on pizza many years ago.  I think my dad was still alive, so it had to have been pre 1976.  Anyhoo, thank you the fascinating look, but I'll pass on eating.
