« on: May 24, 2015, 11:20:57 am »

ok we had a hard freeze the other night and the grape vines already had bunches going into grapes
mostly from the very early heat and no frost up till now...totally not normal

I have started hard prunging on the concord vines and thought better of it
but haven't started on the white ones yet

I can't find any info on line or in any of my books and the extension guys won't be around till
next week

so if any one has constructive info.. could you please share

I don't want to do any more damage but the leaves are dead and the bunches  are too

leave them alone or continue  to cut them off?... now that is the questioni

thanks for any info

hugs

My daughter looked up Farmer's Almanac  They predicted that weird cold spell we ar in in Las Vegas  I am loving the cool temps and rain...

BUT

I can't find any info on WHY we are this cool.  I have been here since 98  Its always in the high 90's or 100's by this time...

Almanac says it will stay high 80's through June

HOW DO THEY KNOW  and where is the info?

Oklahoma record floods California drying up and we are in the middle

well here's the answer to your question..but I still need help on the grape pruning....

How Does the Farmers’ Almanac Predict the Weather?

No we don’t have the groundhog on our staff, nor do we use computers or weather folklore to make our long-range projections.

The Farmers’ Almanac weather predictions are based on a secret mathematical and astronomical formula. Developed in 1818 by David Young, the Almanac‘s first editor, this formula takes many factors into consideration, including sunspot activity, moon phases, tidal action, and more. This carefully guarded formula has been passed along from calculator to calculator and has never been revealed.

The only person who knows all the details of our formula is Caleb Weatherbee, our esteemed weather prognosticator. The formula itself is locked in the heart and mind of its calculator. While Caleb is a real person who lives somewhere in the United States, his true identity and name are secret.

Unlike your local news, government, or commercial weather service, our forecasts are calculated several years in advance. Once the new year’s Farmers’ Almanac is printed, we never go back to change or update our forecasts the way other local sources do.

Though weather forecasting, and long-range forecasting in particular, remains an inexact science, many longtime Almanac followers claim that our forecasts are 80% to 85% accurate.

Unfortunately, I can't ask my grandfather, he knew a lot about that (he once grafted (I think that's the right word) a carnation on a cabbage and had a pear tree that had six different types of pears, he was also the person that chose the grapes from several farmers to make the wine for the village he lived in), but from what I could find online (in Portuguese), it looks like all dead parts should be removed to allow the plant to recover as soon as possible.

On one site they said that the removal of the dead parts may allow the growth of a second "version" that is weaker than the first but that may give some grapes instead of nothing.

hi ArMaP
I appreciate you taking the time ..thank you..
yeah,  it sure would be nice to ask some of the old folks..they knew stuff
your grandfather sounds a lot like my father in law..

and that info is pretty much what I found.. soooooooooot

I decided to just stop where I was
..and it will be this year's experiment....
I pretty much chopped off most of the vines in one spot and then  just the dead stuff and then just left the rest as is.. some had second leaves already coming out
I put my tools away and walked away from it cause I wanted to keep cutting...sigh

I will take good notes in my garden journal and if we are really lucky maybe someone with knowledge will post...

lol.. otherwise it will take till fall for a determination..

ok got some corn I want to plant.. hahahahah another experiment..along the house...but this one I feel much better about the outcome..

thanks again

go ahead and cut the damaged areas out, otter; it will promote faster recovery...

Z, i seem to recall some russian climatologist predicting a mini ice age for the US this year...

the same weather system causing the mid-west floods is drying the south out rather quickly; going to have to water my yard and trees if i want them to stay green...
