garlic * 101..planting first
« on: March 11, 2013, 11:42:32 am »

ok i am one happy camper today.. ordered my onions this morning  - i'm late with that but they aren't delivered till mid april..so it's ok..in the northern part of the country where i am we grow the long day onions
and
;D planted some more garlic cause some of what i planted last fall failed..boo hoo
but it was an experiment to see if two and three year old stuff would grow..the answer is no  :(

unbelievably the ones i am planting now and the ones from last fall will  all harvest at the same time..for me it has always been late july / early august..so figure  on about 140 days - approx.
the old timers believe that the ones that winter over have more flavor

so i thought maybe a how to for anyone who hasn't tried planting ...it's not hard
and since a photos is worth  so much i took some of them too

what my current patch looks like after the snow..pretty awful but you can see it doesn't take up much space..there are 60 plants that are growing now
the patch you are looking at is 17 feet across and the rows are 12 inches apart
with the garlic approx. a hand apart and one knuckle deep

the boards i use to walk thur the patch because after the many wonderful years of
gardening here the earth is nicely friable...you can put your hand into it up to your elbow  ;D

what you will need
garlic, string line with 2 sticks, some type of measure for spacing the row, finger hoe

the string line goes from one side to the other and  you can make a small trench under the line
use the measureing piece to move the string line to the next row and make another trench
this is so the rows are straight and the distance between them the same

just lay the garlic in the row..that way you can easily respace them in the room that you have

after you have them placed.. go back and press into the soil - leaving a tiny bit of them
out of the ground...then pull the dirt back over them from the trentch

and then  write down what you have done..believe me.. it makes it soooooo much easier from year to year....i use a spiral notebook and deaw pictures.. i will also come back and make a note
for what and when i harvested..

and yes i know i am anal retentive.. ;D..i'm cool with it   8)

good luck and i will surely answer any questions

I grow winter multiplying onions ,elephant garlic and im trying purple garlic this year.
Ive been successful with the first two here in hell.they lay dormant in the summer.
i pick the flowering tops before they bloom to get them to multiply.
ive got close to a thousand winter onions and aboult fifty garlic right now.
I highly reccomend those types for survivability.
It looks like purple stiff neck garlic is kinda hardy.will know more in a few months.

Got my prudence purple and aunt ruby green tomatoe seeds sprouted and transplanted into three inch pots.

Tobacco is sprouted but not ready for transplant yet.

Pot is already in the ground in the jungle.

Come on rain give me a good year.

Watched some youtube vids on kiwi so im sproutin seeds right now i hope.

Good luck sky

hey robo
thanks
and those flowers are called scapes
and are a big deal now

check this out

http://www.garlicfarmct.com/recipes.htm
Garlic scape recipes
Garlic scapes, or flower stalks, emerge from hard-necked varieties of garlic in June. The stalks wind up as they grow and form eccentric curlicues. Snipping off the scapes before the flowerheads mature directs more energy into the developing garlic bulb, and so we snip them off for a garlic scape harvest in mid-June.
When the garlic scapes are still in full curl, they are tender and succulent. They have a garlicky taste that is milder than the garlic cloves with the tender snap of just-picked asparagus. Garlic scapes have many uses from soup to salads to garnishes.

The garlic scape is an allium delicacy that is highly prized and traditionally used in Southern and Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Korean, and other Asian cuisine because of its subtle garlic flavor and tender-crisp texture.

Find links to more ideas on our scapes links page. Let us know at the newsletter about your favorite scape concoction or discovery.

Have fun!

My garlic (some) did survive, I had to fight the neighbor- hood cat,  it thinks all tilled soil is for it, so had to resort to laying chicken wire over the area.  When my sister brought me over the seed garlic she brought over some "scapes" Wow, are they great in soups and stir-fry. Very intense flavor. She who has raised garlic for years, had no idea she was throwing away something, that was "a-la-gourmet'", live and learn. ;)

It's hard to plant something when you live in an apartment building, and there isn't enough space for anything really useful. :(

A complete grow light setup of 400watts is 200 bucks at htgs.com.
Badass deal comes with timer and two bulbs.
Two of them dont put off enough heat for a signature and the humidity of a grow is healthy for the skin and provides a more stable temp in the house.each light running 24 hoirs a day cost ten a month in electricity.twenty total.been using the same bulbs for two years almost.eighteen 3 gallon pots with potting soil fits under them.just remember to use filtered or rain water to water with.
Twenty dollars a month for all the veggies you can eat and plenty left over.

I did not know about scapes.been throwin them on the ground.

Lights and bat poo make everything grow fast and big.
My personal potting soil mix is peat perlite potting soil.all in thirds.
A tablespoon of poo and ahalf cup of woodash per pot.
If your plant or tree has a disease.always try woodash first.it cures almost all diseases.
I have a small orchard and even with the drought my trees are healthy or theyre dead.nothing in between.
