A very lucky Colorado woman found an 8.52 carat diamond this week at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas.

Bobbie Oskarson of Longmont, Colo. discovered the diamond after only 20 minutes of searching. According to the park, it's the fifth largest diamond discovered by a visitor since the state park was established in 1972.

The diamond is about three-quarters of an inch long and is as wide as a No. 2 pencil.

Oskarson is calling her find the Esperanza Diamond, which is her niece’s name as well "hope" in Spanish. She found the diamond in an area of the park called the Pig Pen, because it's one of the muddiest spots. She currently plans to keep it.

“Ms. Oskarson’s eight-and-a-half-carat diamond is absolutely stunning, sparkling with a metallic shine, and appears to be an unbroken, capsule-shaped crystal. It features smooth, curved facets, a characteristic shared by all unbroken diamonds from the Crater of Diamonds," said Park Interpreter Waymon Cox in a statement.

I heard about the find.  I didn't realize she was from Colorado.  Taking my grandkids there is on my to do list.  I think it would be fun.

Herimers are fancy quartz crystals... You need a sledge hammer and elbow grease to smash open pocket :D  I was going to take a shot but I can but lots cheaper

That diamond is awesome  It is clear by the looks of that picture  so will fetch several million most likely

Interesting point...

State Parks have started to consider rock hounding a recreational ALLOWED activity... no power tools  only pick and shovel  but this is a great trend as many good collecting sites happen to be within state parks

Well those people are silly..

Take THIS rock for example... (okay technically it is a MINERAL :P)

FLUORITE

I hope to sell this one for a good bit of cash.... this one weighs 7.5 pounds and is similar to one that went at auction for enough to pay off my mortgage... but I don't want to jinx it... it is from a different location.  However 330 people bid on that other one and and only ONE got it so... :P

Also rare.. because it is one bif single cube. Fluorite normally crystalizes in octahedrons (double pyramids)

Good source for checking stones offered online  China tends to mislabel stuff :P and not all dealers know

There are two colorful natural glasses

Libyan Desert Glass (vitrified sand from meteorite strike)

And the bright green one from Australia

As for the blue obsidian  Seems there might be some natural, like the green from Australia  They do look like raw glass though

As to Aqua Aura  that is one of those New Age Heally Feely terms  Sad thing is they make more money with fraud than I do :P

I will have to look closer at the blue stuff  but they have been finding a lot of new mineral deposits

https://www.bukalapak.com/p/hobi/koleksi/lain-lain-337/gki3-jual-rough-royal-blue-obsidian

THIS is Batu Obsidian  I suppose it is possible to get some small gemmy sections

This one however looks more like blue glass
