International Space Station Will Move To Different Orbit To Avoid Debris

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian space program's Mission Control Center says it will move the International Space Station into a different orbit to avoid possible collision with a fragment of debris

NASA estimates that more than 21,000 fragments of orbital debris larger than 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) are stuck in earth's orbit, and experts worry that orbiting junk is becoming a growing problem for the space industry.

I had an inetersting thought about Space Junk the other day but unfortanatley the exact wording is not with me right now.  Went something like this:

Why do we need to keep monitoring Space Junk and why is it becoming such a threat ?

That in itself could be answered without a tinfoil hat ofc... but thats not how I roll on this matter when I read someone with doctor to their name from a joint OZ/USA program talk of having fun using a star trek tractor style plamsa beam in space to move Space Junk :D

With tin foil hat one could think quite easily that the nations of the world are blasting each other up in Orbit.  Honestly, I don't think that is going on at all, as all the percieved power nations are pretty much hunky dory with hands in each others pockets allowing each other to fake space related activities for public consumption.

I do wonder if all them black triangles etc are infact having a few skirmish's with ET in orbit though and seriously consider the idea as being quite possible  ;D

I guess having the Space Station in dire need to move due to space junk also makes for a good re4ason to appropriate funds into Space Escapades without the public knowing too  ;D

The "Brooksline-2120" Plasma induction spawaste removal system...
Uses a special combination Magno/Gravetic collector powered by Plasma drive...Built to look like a typical 20th century cleaning appliance by it's creators the "El-En-Iki" consortium. Can collect up to 1000 metric tons up to a 1000x1000 foot imprint. It's unique disposal system allows for in system disposal via the " International Solar dumping Station" ( a much more cost effective solution), or you may choose to interdimensionaly transfer the debris to the "Orb Dimension" using the built in transdimensional transport unit (not life supporting).. A much more costly option is to transport through the high-lunar Star-Gate to a galaxy somewhen far far away. ...Always choose "El-En-Iki" for your planetary maintenance needs...Remember "If it doesn't suck. It blows"..trademark patent pending.

Hi Folks,

I have been watching a number of the ISS videos on YT and looking at Vids on Martyn S YT page, on a number of the vids it is possible to see what look like meteorites flash thru the field of view at quite energetic rates - ;D

And I was wondering if anyone had any documented evidence if the ISS or the US Shuttles had ever had impacts with meteorites or other space debris??  - because I would find it amazing to discover that in all the time we have had space flight that none of the vehicles we have put into Low Earth Orbit have never had a hit   :P

I know space is a big place but we do get regular visits from meteor showers.. and it looks like those meteorites are moving at a epic rate of knots  #thingsthatmakemego Hhhmmmm..
 :o :o :P

Also solar storms and radiation..  have the ISS / Soyuz programs ever recorded the actual radiation levels that these storms create(d) ?? :-\

Any links or info are gratefully received (and if this is the wrong thread or duplicate please accept my apologies)

Cheers! :-)

I think that they found a small particle embedded on a Space Shuttle window, but I'm not sure.

They probably record it as part of their ongoing medical investigations.

I've read micrometeorites constantly bombard stuff in orbit, which makes sense.

The shuttles was reported to have an occasional ping during inspection; I believe that the solar panels for the ISS have had a ping or two, and one of the astronauts cut his glove on one of the walk rails on the ISS that had sustained micrometeorite damage

STS-35 Space Shuttle window pit from orbital debris impact.

Here’s what space debris does to the Kevlar shielding protecting the International Space Station

The spacecraft’s hull, beneath the Kevlar shielding. Scorched, but unharmed.

Challenger window

Mir (enlarge image and look at rightmost solar panel)

Endeavor:

Officials from the space shuttle program have said the shuttle regularly takes hits from space debris, and over 80 windows had to be replaced over the years. The ISS occasionally has to take evasive maneuvers to avoid collisions with space junk. And of course, this debris is not just sitting stationary: in orbit, relative velocities can be quite large, ranging in the tens of thousands of kilometers per hour.

Changing a window in space..  not once but 80 times, I would love to get my hands on the Tech Order Manual that details the procedure for doing this..  the Astronaut gloves they use for this must be very..  err...  easy to manipulate?  .. Hmmm..    :) ;)

Interesting.. interesting indeed  8)
