Astronomers around the world are trying to track down a small, fast-moving object that is zipping through our solar system.

Is a comet? An asteroid? NASA's not sure. The space agency doesn't even know where it came from, but it's not behaving like the local space rocks and that means it may not be from our solar system.

If that's confirmed, NASA says "it would be the first interstellar object to be observed and confirmed by astronomers."

"We have been waiting for this day for decades," Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, said in a NASA news release. "It's long been theorized that such objects exist – asteroids or comets moving around between the stars and occasionally passing through our solar system – but this is the first such detection. So far, everything indicates this is likely an interstellar object, but more data would help to confirm it."

NASA says astronomers are pointing telescopes on the ground and in space at the object to get that data.

For now, the object is being called A/2017 U1. Experts think it's less than a quarter-mile (400 meters) in diameter and it's racing through space at 15.8 miles (25.5 kilometers) per second.

It was discovered October 19 by the University of Hawaii's Pan-STARRS 1 telescope on Haleakala, Hawaii.

Rob Weryk, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy, was the first to identify the object and immediately realized there was something different about it.

"Its motion could not be explained using either a normal solar system asteroid or comet orbit," he said. "This object came from outside our solar system."

Whatever "it" is, the object isn't a threat to Earth.

NASA say that on October 14, it safely passed our home world at a distance of about 15 million miles (24 million kilometers) – that's about 60 times the distance to the moon.

Where's it going? Scientists think the object is heading toward the constellation Pegasus and is on its way out of our solar system.

"This is the most extreme orbit I have ever seen," said Davide Farnocchia, a scientist at the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies. "It is going extremely fast and on such a trajectory that we can say with confidence that this object is on its way out of the solar system and not coming back."

"It" may eventually get a better name than A/2017 U1, but since the object is the first of its kind, the International Astronomical Union will have to come up with new rules for naming the object.

It is what at least suggests its trajectory. If confirmed, then, we would be talking about the first time we identified an interstellar comet. Minor Planet Center astronomers have released a notice for follow-up observations C / 2017 U1 PANSTARRS, which was first discovered on October 18, 2017 from the Panoramic Survey Telescope and the Quick Response System (Pan-STARRS) located in the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii. The observations must be made fast, before it disappears, because the comet is on its way out of the Solar System. The comet was about 30 million kilometers from Earth, and only 6 days of observations have been made. It traveled at a speed of 26 km / s, much faster than the escape velocity of the Solar System.

Astronomers reveal first 'alien' comet seen passing through our solar system is 'shaped like a giant pink fire extinguisher'
Comet C/2017 U1 was first spotted by a telescope in Hawaii on 18 October

It was then spotted 34 separate times in the week that followed
Most comets follow ellipse-shaped orbits around the sun
But this comet orbits at an angle, and does not appear to go round the sun

Experts suggest this shows that it comes from interstellar space
Solar system could be packed with 10,000 interstellar travelers at any given time

A newly discovered object from another star system that's passing through ours is shaped like a giant pink fire extinguisher, astronomers have revealed.
Astronomers who have been observing this first-ever confirmed interstellar visitor have named it Oumuamua, which in Hawaiian means a messenger from afar arriving first.
Scientists are certain this 600-foot-long, pale pink asteroid or comet originated outside our solar system.

Scroll down for video

'I'm surprised by the elongated shape - nobody expected that,' said astronomer David Jewitt of the University of California, Los Angeles, who led the observation team that reported on the characteristics.
Scientists are certain this asteroid or comet originated outside our solar system.

First spotted last month by the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii, it will stick around for another few years before departing our sun's neighborhood.

Jewitt and his international team observed the object for five nights in late October using the Nordic Optical Telescope in the Canary Islands and the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona.

At approximately 100 feet by 100 feet by 600 feet (30 meters buy 30 meters by 180 meters), the object has proportions roughly similar to a fire extinguisher — though not nearly as red, Jewitt said Thursday.

The slightly red hue — specifically pale pink — and varying brightness are remarkably similar to asteroids in our own solar system, he noted.
Astronomer Jayadev Rajagopal said in an email that it was exciting to point the Arizona telescope at such a tiny object 'which, for all we know, has been traveling through the vast emptiness of space for millions of years.'
'And then by luck passes close enough for me to be able to see it that night!'

The object is so faint and so fast — it's zooming through the solar system at 40,000 mph (64,000 kph) — it's unlikely amateur astronomers will see it.

In a paper to the Astrophysical Journal Letters, the scientists report that our solar system could be packed with 10,000 such interstellar travelers at any given time. It takes 10 years to cross our solar system, providing plenty of future viewing opportunities, the scientists said.
Trillions of objects from other star systems could have passed our way over the eons, according to Jewitt.

It suggests our solar system ejected its own share of asteroids and comets as the large outer planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune — formed.
Why did it take so long to nail the first interstellar wanderer?
'Space is big and our eyes are weak,' Jewitt explained via email.
First spotted last month, it will stick around for another few years before departing our sun's neighborhood.

patches of red/pink: a so-called HII ("H-two") region. This is a cloud of ionized hydrogen (a cloud of free protons and electrons). When a proton captures an electron, it can give off light of various wavelengths as the electron hops down through energy levels. One particular hop, which is pretty common, emits red light, causing the HII region to appear reddish. HII regions are ionized in the first place by ultraviolet radiation from hot stars, so they indicate star-forming regions.

These are just a few features that happen to fall in the visible wavelength range; looking at radiation in the radio, infrared, ultraviolet, x-ray, and gamma ray wavelength regions can reveal many more galactic characteristics.

Bizarre Interstellar Asteroid Is Unlike Any Observed In Solar System

Astronomers are still debating the origins of the first confirmed interstellar object to pass through our solar system, now known as 1I/2017 U1 (`Oumuamua). But an international observing team of professional astronomers says that this highly-elongated, 400-meter long asteroid may well have been wandering through the galaxy unattached to any star system for hundreds of millions of years. That is, long before its wholly unexpected encounter with our own solar system.

This artist’s impression shows the first interstellar asteroid: `Oumuamua. This unique object was discovered on 19 October 2017 by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawai`i. Subsequent observations from ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile and other observatories around the world show that it was travelling through space for millions of years before its chance encounter with our star system. `Oumuamua seems to be a dark red highly-elongated metallic or rocky object, about 400 metres long, and is unlike anything normally found in the Solar System.

Discovered only a month ago by astronomers using the Pan-STARRs1 telescope in Hawaii, an international team led by astronomer Karen Meech has made detailed measurements of its properties. “This thing is very strange, with a complex, convoluted shape,” Meech, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, said in a statement.

Among the strangest things about the object is its bizarre, elongated shape, estimated to be some ten times as long as it is wide. Spinning on its axis every 7.3 hours, its extreme brightness variations are unlike any known asteroid or comet from our own solar system.

“We also found that it had a reddish color, similar to objects in the outer solar system, and confirmed that it is completely inert, without the faintest hint of dust around it,” Meech said in a statement.

Thus, it apparently is an asteroid and not a comet. Thought to be dense, possibly rocky or with high metal content , the European Southern Observatory (ESO) reports it lacks significant amounts of water or ice, and that its surface is now dark and reddened due to the effects of irradiation from cosmic rays over millions of years.

These properties suggest that ‘Oumuamua is dense, composed of rock and possibly metals, has no water or ice, and that its surface was reddened due to the effects of irradiation from cosmic rays over hundreds of millions of years.

Although such interstellar objects are thought to visit our solar system about once a year, it’s only been since next generation survey telescopes like Pan-STARRs have come online that astronomers have had a chance to spot them.

`Oumuamua dropped into our solar system from “above” the ecliptic, the plane where most planets and asteroids orbit the sun, and is now skipping away from the solar system, headed back to interstellar space, the University of Wisconsin reported last week.  The university noted that even to the largest telescopes, the object appears as a faint, fuzzy spot on a background of stars.

Yet observations are continuing. Thus, astronomers hope to more accurately determine from where it originated and exactly where it’s going next .

Both NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope will continue tracking the object this week. As of today, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) reports that ‘Oumuamua is traveling about 85,700 miles per hour relative to the Sun. JPL says its outbound location is now some 124 million miles from Earth, and some 20 degrees above the plane of the ecliptic — the geometric plane on which our planets orbit the Sun.

As for figuring out where it actually originated?

That may never be possible. But says that preliminary orbital calculations indicate that the object had come from the approximate direction of the bright star Vega, in the northern constellation of Lyra. But Vega was not even near that position an estimated 300,000 years ago when the asteroid passed through that region of the sky. So, where from which star system it ultimately originated will take more calculations and astronomical detective work.

As for where it’s heading?

It will pass Jupiter next may before traveling beyond the orbit of Saturn in January 2019. Once it leaves our solar system, JPL says it will be heading for the constellation of Pegasus.

Ground-based telescopes will continue to track it until mid-December or until it becomes too faint to be detected.

Maybe it's a space ship. :)

Interisting take from a reddit user:

Quote
Astronomer here! I will never say this lightly, but we are, swear to God, actually discussing with some seriousness right now what are the odds that this was actually a spaceship. Which I 100% assure you has never happened before in my memory with seriousness.

Basically, the dimensions of this thing being so much longer than it is tall, combined with the no dust part, are both highly irregular details. Not so irregular there's no natural way to explain them, but irregular enough that this is definitely not your normal space rock. And unfortunately we are not really going to get any more new data on this space rock, so I guess we'll be speculating about this for the rest of my professional career.

The issue though is it is tumbling, and no thermal emission was detected. But there's no way that doesn't mean it's the dead hull of an alien spacecraft from millions of years ago, my one colleague is arguing, and I'm arguing that if you had computer intelligence type beings perhaps they'd go to stasis for the millions of years the journey takes to wherever they were going (and in my scenario, they were just using us as a tidal slingshot sorta like how we slingshot by planets to save on spacecraft fuel).

Soooo cool! :) But I'm sad if it was aliens that the aliens didn't want to hang out. :(

(To be clear, it was most likely a space rock. But right now I believe we can't say for sure if it wasn't a space rock based on data.)

Edit: Here is the paper (behind paywall) for those interested. Also, apparently there is some potential Hubble and Spitzer telescope data in the works, so we may get a few more details about 'Oumuamua in coming months!

"Pseudo-MPEC" for A/2017 U1

Updated 2017 Nov 10 21:30 UT

Those looking for the "usual" pseudo-MPEC listing observations, orbital elements, and ephemerides should click here. The following is aimed at a more general audience, to answer some of the questions I've had aimed at me regarding this object.

Where is this object going? Where did it come from?
How fast is it going?
How big is it?
Why is this a Big Deal?
Why was it first designated as a comet, then as a rock?
Can we send a spacecraft to it?
What's this I hear about it not really being interstellar?
Maybe this is a solar system object after all?
Some links about this object
Where is this object going? Where did it come from?

With the solution below, the object came from RA=18h 39m 14s, dec=+33 59' 50", with an uncertainty of about 2'. This is about five degrees away from the bright star Vega.

After it leaves the solar system, it'll be headed toward RA=23 51 29.5, dec=+24 44.4', with an uncertainty of about 15 arcseconds. This is in the direction of the constellation Pegasus.

and a nice loooooong page of other info plus the list above

The giant pink fire extinguisher would go with the pink baby T-Rex I dreamed about.  She was my pet. I was taking her to obedience school.

Even if someone knew for sure what the object is, nobody would tell us. The truth might set too many people free.

Astronomers to check interstellar body for signs of alien technology
 The Guardian The Guardian
Ian Sample Science editor

Astronomers are to use one of the world’s largest telescopes to check a mysterious object that is speeding through the solar system for signs of alien technology.

The Green Bank telescope in West Virginia will listen for radio signals being broadcast from a cigar-shaped body which was first spotted in the solar system in October. The body arrived from interstellar space and reached a peak speed of 196,000 mph as it swept past the sun.

Scientists on the Breakthrough Listen project, which searches for evidence of alien civilisations, said the Green Bank telescope would monitor the object, named ‘Oumuamua, from Wednesday. The first phase of observations is expected to last 10 hours and will tune in to four different radio transmission bands.

“Most likely it is of natural origin, but because it is so peculiar, we would like to check if it has any sign of artificial origin, such as radio emissions,” said Avi Loeb, professor of astronomy at Harvard University and an adviser to the Breakthrough Listen project. “If we do detect a signal that appears artificial in origin, we’ll know immediately.”

The interstellar body, the first to be seen in the solar system, was initially spotted by researchers on the Pan-Starrs telescope, which the University of Hawaii uses to scan the heavens for killer asteroids. Named after the Hawaiian word for “messenger”, the body was picked up as it swept past Earth at 85 times the distance to the moon.

While many astronomers believe the object is an interstellar asteroid, its elongated shape is unlike anything seen in the asteroid belt in our own solar system. Early observations of ‘Oumuamua show that it is about 400m long but only one tenth as wide. “It’s curious that the first object we see from outside the solar system looks like that,” said Loeb.

"> The object’s orbit
The body is now about twice as far from Earth as the sun, but from that distance the Green Bank telescope can still detect transmissions as weak as those produced by a mobile phone. Loeb said that while he did not expect Green Bank to detect an alien transmission, it was worth checking.

“The chances that we’ll hear something are very small, but if we do, we will report it immediately and then try to interpret it,” Loeb said. “It would be prudent just to check and look for signals. Even if we find an artefact that was left over and there are no signs of life on it, that would be the greatest thrill I can imagine having in my lifetime. It’s really one of the fundamental questions in science, perhaps the most fundamental: are we alone?”

The Breakthrough Listen project was launched at the Royal Society in London in 2015, when the Cambridge cosmologist Stephen Hawking announced the effort to listen for signs of life on planets that orbit the million stars closest to Earth. The $100m project is funded by the internet billionaire Yuri Milner, and has secured time on telescopes in the US and Australia to search for alien civilisations.

Astronomers do not have good ideas about how such elongated objects could be created in asteroid belts. By studying ‘Oumuamua more closely, they hope to learn how they might form and whether there are others in the solar system that have so far gone unnoticed. “If it’s of natural origin, there should be many more of them,” Loeb said.

Previous work on the body found it to be extremely dark red, absorbing about 96% of light that falls on it. The colour is associated with carbon-based molecules on comets and asteroids.

If, as expected, the telescope fails to pick up any intelligent broadcasts from ‘Oumuamua, the observations are still expected to aid scientists in understanding the body. Other signals detected by the Green Bank telescope could shed light on whether the object is shrouded in a comet-like cloud of gas, and reveal whether it is carrying water and ice through the solar system.

And?

Is it mean it is not cylindrical? How can you be sure? Do you know the speed of the object?

Can you explain how it works to me? ty in advance.

If it's a long exposure and we can see the stars as stars then it means that the camera that took the photo was synchronized with the Earth's rotation, so the object was either cylindrical and synchronized with stars or was not cylindrical (or at least not that long) and not synchronized with the stars.

The fact that the object appears to be made of several segments also helps the idea that the cylindrical shape is a result of the long exposure, as that happens with long exposures of far away objects, as small changes in visibility create those "segments", darker when the visibility is worse and brighter when visibility is better, like in the following photo of an eclipse of the Moon.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Our first known interstellar visitor likely came from a two-star system.

That's the latest from astronomers who were amazed by the mysterious cigar-shaped object, detected as it passed through our inner solar system last fall.

The University of Toronto's Alan Jackson reported Monday that the asteroid — the first confirmed object in our solar system originating elsewhere — is probably from a binary star system. That's where two stars orbit a common center. According to Jackson and his team, the asteroid was likely ejected from its system as planets formed.

"It has been wandering interstellar space for a long time since," the scientists wrote in the Royal Astronomical Society's journal, Monthly Notices .

Discovered in October by a telescope in Hawaii millions of miles away, the asteroid is called Oumuamua, Hawaiian for messenger from afar arriving first, or scout. The red-tinged rock is estimated to be possibly 1,300 feet (400 meters) long and zooming away from the Earth and sun at more than 16 miles (26 kilometers) per second.

Last month, a science team led by Wesley Fraser of Queen's University Belfast reported that Oumuamua is actually tumbling through space, likely the result of a collision with another asteroid or other object that kicked it out of its home solar system. He expects it to continue tumbling for billions of more years.

Scientists originally thought it might be an icy comet, but now agree it is an asteroid.

"The same way we use comets to better understand planet formation in our own solar system, maybe this curious object can tell us more about how planets form in other systems." Jackson said in a statement.

Close binary star systems may be the source of the majority of interstellar objects out there, both icy comets and rocky asteroids, according to the researchers.

A mysterious object that passed through our solar system last year may have been part of a vessel sent by an alien entity to investigate Earth.

Research published earlier this month by the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics states that the object, called Oumuamua, is "the first object of interstellar origin observed in the Solar System."

The cigar-shaped object was first discovered by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii on Oct. 19, 2017. It was given the Hawaiian name of Oumuamua, which means "A scout: one sent forward before a battle to discover the position of the enemy," according to A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language. First suspected to be a comet, further analysis of the object "implies that Oumuamua is not an active comet."

Oumuamua was also thought to be an asteroid. However, scientists have now deemed it an object of interstellar origin – the first of its kind to be observed in the solar system.

But based on its characteristics and trajectories, researchers are now suggesting that Oumuamua "may be a fully operational probe sent internationally to Earth vicinity by an alien civilization," calling it a "targeted probe."

The research theorizes that Oumuamua could possibly have been debris from advanced technology that was traveling in space.

"Considering an artificial origin, one possibility is that Oumuamua is a lightsail, floating in interstellar space as a debris from an advanced technological equipment," the scientists wrote in the paper.

During its flight, Oumuamua experienced "excess acceleration," or boosts in speed, which scientists believe resulted from solar radiation pressure. This fluctuation in speed, the object's "unusual geometry" and other "various anomalies" could be the result of "space debris of equipment that is not operational anymore." Rather, it is now simply "floating at the characteristic speed of stars relative to each other in the solar neighborhood."

According to the authors, similar lightsails have been constructed by scientists on Earth and can be used for transportation of cargo between planet or stars.

Unfortunately, Oumuamua left the solar system in January and it is now too late to capture images of the mysterious object. However, scientists say "thousands of interstellar Oumuamua-like space debris are expected to be trapped at any given time in the solar system."

Yes Space Otter, this is very interesting.  When an object is being discussed as a potential alien artefact or even a deliberately targeted probe by two Harvard Professors in public then it deserves attention.

I have some material on this to share.  I will try to post it tonight (UK time).  If I forget remind me tomorrow. :)
