Oprah Winfrey for president: a wild idea that just got dramatically more real

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2018/jan/08/oprah-winfrey-for-president-analysis

Quote
Oprah Winfrey for president? That was the burning question in American politics on Monday after the entertainment celebrity and entrepreneur delivered a barnstorming speech that had many hailing her as the antidote to Donald Trump.

Speaking at the Golden Globe awards in Hollywood on Sunday night, Winfrey moved the audience to tears as she praised women who have shared their stories of sexual harassment and abuse and declared that “a new day is on the horizon”.

In a measure of how Trump, a wealthy TV celebrity and political novice, has changed the rules of the game, there was an instant surge of tweets with the hashtags “Oprahforpresident” and “Oprah2020” urging Winfrey to run in the next election in November 2020.

After the speech, the actor and producer, who is chief executive of the OWN cable channel, told the Bloomberg news agency that she has no plans to run. But on Monday CNN reported that she is “actively thinking” about it, citing two close friends, whom it did not name. And the Los Angeles Times quoted Stedman Graham, Winfrey’s longtime partner, as saying: “It’s up to the people … She would absolutely do it.”

Interesting to think about.  I don`t think she would want to go through all of the mud slinging and dirt exploration to become president.

Time will tell what she decides.

I will admit that my initial reaction was cynicism, but then I realised that I honestly do not know whether she would have the appropriate qualifications or not.  At the very least, her occupation has presumably given her a lot of experience in dealing with people, if nothing else.  I know a lot of people have apparently found her inspiring, and positively, emotionally mediating the public is a large part of a President's real job.

So who knows?  She would presumably need a good staff in order to fill in the blanks in her knowledge, and be willing to delegate; but assuming that she can do that, and someone can come up with a coherent and positive big picture for her to strive towards, then it could very well work.  I doubt she'd be less popular than the last three Presidents, anyway.

This image is dealing primarily with the difference between individualism and collectivism, not liberalism and conservatism.  There are collectivist conservatives; they're called Nazis.  Individualist Leftists used to be called Anarchists, but you virtually never hear about them any more, because the Marxists have almost entirely wiped them out.

Another distinction that needs to be made here, is the difference between liberalism and the Left, which is usually (but not exclusively) Marxist.  Liberalism in the medieval sense of the word was a political derivation of Hermeticism.  What gets mis-labelled liberalism these days, is generally much closer to Fabian Socialism; which is tangentially different from Marxism, but is essentially soft core Communism, or what Communists try and introduce to a society if it is known that ML Communism itself is not wanted.

The day I interviewed for my job, I had to cut the interview short so i could attend my cousin's funeral.  My conservative, born again Christian, Navy veteran cousin died because the insurance he was purchasing through his employer considered  his diabetes as a pre existing condition. It didn't  matter that his previous insurance had covered it, the new company wouldn't. He didn't have a choice about leaving his previous job. He wasn't  old enough to take early retirement  when Rocky Flats shut down.
Then of course, there's the Department of Labor.  That organization has repeatedly denied that many Rocky Flats workers contracted work related illnesses.  All those people were asking, was recompense for the damage done by their patriotic duty.  The cancers they contracted didn't care about liberal or conservative.  It was equal opportunity.

Yep; and the media over here predictably bang the drum every Anzac Day, while I hear that hardly a single football match occurs in America now without the obligatory hail to the troops.  Meanwhile, in reality the government treats said actual troops like shit; uses them for what it wants, and then throws them away when it is finished with them.

The hypocrisy is disgraceful.  The only reason why governments encourage reverence of the military among the civilian public, is because it makes said public easier to control, but it's all just hollow pageantry and ceremony.  Meanwhile veterans go without benefits and medical treatment, and flood out into the streets after they get home, where they live in tent cities or under bridges, and corporations install steel spikes outside their front entrances, so that said veterans and various other homeless people can't sleep there.

There is so much injustice.

Although this is off topic Petrus I must say that my grandfather was on the battle line's in Asia during WW2.

Sometimes when he recalled some story's he would break down in tears, other time's he laugh and recall good time's.

I will never forget the story he told me about the end of ww2 and the truce between the Japanese and the Aussie's where he was located.  He told me how the war had ended and both side's had sat on either side of a river in a truce where they both knew it was over... A new 'general' sorta bloke (Australian Side who had no experience on the field) was brought in and ordered them to fire and kill people whilst the Japanese Troops were taking their truce to share water from the river.  My grandpa said the squad did it, against their will as the repercussions may have been deadly.

That must have been horrible for your grandfather.  I couldn`t imagine being in that position.  Very difficult to get over something like that.

As far as Oprah goes, look at the dirt that has surfaced already and she hasn`t even said she would run! :o

Just a note on Trump.  Businesses, Corporations, Good ole Boys (and Girls) love him and Government, Democrats and the Media are against him.  Even here in Canada, the nightly news is full of the soap opera from D.C.
