Title: Polar Vortex Revisited...
Post by: The Seeker on December 10, 2017, 11:23:30 pm
The last few days have been interesting here in North west Georgia  8)
The weather forecast called for 1-3 inches of snow for my area Friday and possibly 1-3 inches of snow Friday night as Winter Storm Benji stretched from Houston to Atlanta, bringing snow to Galveston and Corpus Christi, the Carolinas all the way up the eastern seaboard to parts of Maine

by Friday afternoon at sundown I have 6 inches in my yard, by 9 am Saturday when it finally stopped and the sun emerged, I had 12 inches of snow in my yard

the power went out at 8:50 pm Friday night and was not restored until 9:10 am Saturday morning; the cable came back on Sunday morning around 8 am, and the internet came back on at 5pm Sunday afternoon

the only saving grace was that our temperatures had been well above freezing, actually 15-25 degrees above normal for this time of year, so there has not really been any significant issues with icy roads

this is a far cry from normal late fall conditions for my area  :o

Snow would be a change for me, but we either get cold or rain, not both, so we don't get snow here.

ArMap, does it ever go below freezing there? For some reason I was thinking that it doesn't ever get cold enough in Portugal to think about snowing  ???

Not having been aware how this time of year may have been over the last so many years in the zone that you live , its hard to know how you really may have expected the snow fall to be for December...

But I am sure many places in the USA would have snow normally by now.. even though I know we all are aware Winters generally have been milder certainly over the last 10 to 20 years..in many places in the Northern Zones..

Whatever Seeker,
It looks an amazing place where you live out in the Country !

Some people would love to see snow like that ! It certainly has its impressive side...Verses the annoyance it also brings.

In the UK we have also had snow this last few days in many parts of the Country which over the last 10 yrs or more..in some parts its been rare in December.

Its suggesting some areas will have temperatures of minus 15 in Country areas..when normally we would get + or minus 1 to 5 on average on a cold period in December..

Its been a while since we had a really longer cold winter.. and I am sure one is due soon, if not this next few months.

I think generally most Mediterranean Countries which are further South have milder climates and would only tend to get snow in the higher altitude Mountain areas.. On the Coast , I think its rare for them to get snow..

Although Portugal is a small country there's a relatively big difference between the north and the south, in the north, an area with small mountains, we do get negative temperatures, as we do in our highest (only 2000 metres) mountain, while in the south the temperatures are rarely below zero. Where I live, closer to the south and next to the ocean, temperatures have gone below zero three times in 60 years, but only by a very little margin.

Astro, where I live at in Georgia it is rare for us to have snow, usually many years between it occurring; in the last several years we have a major snow event roughly every 2 years;

normally November and December are on the cool side, with lows cold enough to have frost on a regular basis, but daytime highs usually in the upper 40's to mid 50's; in my 60 years I may have seen a white christmas maybe 5-6 times...

January and February are our 2 coldest months, but it also seems that with the first of March each year we gain 20 degrees both day and night, some years we skip spring and seem to go straight into summer

Yes, it is nice where I live, for it is a rural area; and looking into moving to a new site that has 4 acres of land and is more secluded and private  8)

That makes more sense; you are close to sea level whereas I am 1100 feet above sea level and 300 miles from the ocean  :P

Thinking back to my school Geography classes..if I recall.. yes maybe in the Southern states... generally you have generally relatively milder climates come winter.. and I think your not that far away from Florida which is well known for milder climes all year..as you get closer to the tropics..

But I think sometimes you get  winds bring in cooler air from the Colder North and thats when it hits you !

I know what you mean about going from Jan / Feb and then spring seeming to arrive early... Time goes so quick I cannot be sure without rechecking, but that may have occurred last year or the year before.. and I recall wondering when was a cold patch going to occur and it just didnt happen.

No doubt I can understand the concerns over Climate change.. whether it be a natural cycle or manmade.. as colder winters in some areas always used to occur... and were often wanted in respect that it was believed that it killed off many insects..

BUT in recent times.. in some cases for certain areas.. it seems maybe its not being cold enough for long enough to do so.. and that could have issues the following year with insect populations..

With the USA being so large.. it seems many of you tend to live in rural areas and have good land to go with it..and maybe do not always require brick houses.. and maybe you get a larger house with a large amoount of surrounding  land rather than getting smaller houses in the city that can be expensive in certain parts of the urban areas.

So many TV programs show some of the large wooden type houses you have in the USA..maybe like you see in the Waltons !

Yes it must be nice to find and live in such places in peace rather than in the Concrete jungle.  But in Bad winters... one needs to have good supplies and certain equipment and skills to survive..

Thank you Seeker !

Looks very cool  8) to see and learn a bit about your lair and surrounding locations.  I know you live in a similar place to where Thor did..in the Forested areas of Georgia..

Will need a bit of time to take it in and absorb..

Cheers
