Mysterious Debris Crashes Through Plymouth Warehouse Roof
December 1, 2011

Quote
PLYMOUTH (CBS) – A solid piece of metal crashed through the roof of a Plymouth furniture warehouse on Thursday. Investigators say the debris appears to have fallen from the sky, but it did not come from a plane.

Michael Facchini, the owner of Michael’s Wholesale Furniture Distributors found the 3-5 lb. chunk of debris on the floor of his building off Camelot Drive.

Facchini also discovered a hole in the roof of the building.

“Looked up, the ceiling had a big hole,” he told WBZ-TV’s Kathy Curran. “One of the workers came by and noticed the office was a mess and asked if I knew what happened then I looked and saw metal and figured it came from high above.”

No one was hurt by the falling debris.

The FAA has sent an inspector to Plymouth to help investigators.

They are now tasked with trying to figure out where the metal came from.

PLYMOUTH (CBS)- A Texas man may have solved the mystery of a metal object that crashed through the ceiling of a Plymouth warehouse on Thursday.

Danny Dossman, of Belton, Texas says about 6 months ago, the exact same thing happened at his family funeral home.

Dossman has the pictures to prove it.

He saw our story online and called our newsroom.

“As soon as I saw the piece of metal, it looked so similar to the piece of metal that we had found, I knew it had to be related,” he told WBZ-TV’s Jim Armstrong.

Quote
In his case, a chunk of metal flew out of a broken tree grinder at a nearby construction site.

In the Texas case, the object flew some 800 yards. That means any grinding equipment in the entire industrial park in Plymouth could be to blame.

Plymouth police have asked WBZ-TV to forward them Dossman’s pictures so investigators can have a look.

Of course, we’ll keep you posted.

Hot metal crashes through N.J. business
February 18, 2009

Found this older story while looking for more info...

Quote
JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- A chunk of burning hot metal crashed through the roof of a Jersey City business this morning.

The metal was said to have fallen off some equipment at a nearby business, Reliable Wood.

The hunk of metal made a two-foot square hole in the roof of the business, Al Smith Moving at 33 Pacific Avenue, at around 9 a.m.

The metal has two holes in it and was reportedly so hot that workers at the business couldn't touch it for a half hour.

Nobody inside the business was injured.

The FAA sent their unit from Teterboro Airport and determined the object was not from a plane.

Jersey City's mayor and other city officials also responding to the scene. For a while it was not clear where the object came from.

The business is located in an industrial section of Jersey City. Workers there speculated that the object could have come from a passing plane or from space.

In the past, objects that were initially believed to be from planes have turned out to be projectiles catapulted from the ground.

In 2007, a mysterious piece of metal landed in a Bayonne home.

Initially, police believed it fell from a plane. But FAA inspectors who went to the scene determined it was not an aircraft part. Instead, the piece of metal was suspected to have flown off of light rail tracks located near the home.

Reliable wood products officials claim their equipment is routinely inspected but metal fatigue could have caused the freak event. They add the piece was hot from the friction created in the process of chopping wood into mulch.

The metal was intially a source of mystery but once its origins were located everyone was feeling blessed no one was hurt.

Metal that fell through C'ville roof came from landscaping machinery

By Eric Peterson | Daily Herald Staff
Published: 3/13/2010

Quote
The first surprise Saturday was that a piece of metal that fell through the roof of a Carpentersville house Friday was not from an airplane but a grinding bit that flew off a machine at a nearby landscaping business.

The next surprise was that the matter is apparently being resolved without lawyers.

Dane Willman, the owner of the house on the 200 block of Orleans Street, initially suspected the metal piece to have fallen from a passing aircraft.

Willman found the 4-by-3-inch part on the floor of his bathroom beneath a hole in the ceiling. He discovered it had pierced every floor of his house up to the roof.

Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Tim Bosshart said the piece actually came from a piece of machinery that grinds asphalt and spins at 2,200 rpm.

Friday afternoon, about 400 feet away from Willman's house, workers from Illinois Wood Fiber Products, at 99 Day Lane, were using the tub grinder to turn logs into playground mulch.

"For the very first time in 16 years, a tooth came loose and flew in the opposite direction of where the tub was facing," company owner Steven Johansen said.

It's rare enough for such bits to come off at all, but when they, do they almost always land in the tub itself or no more than 20 feet away, he added.

Johansen speculated the bit must have ricocheted off a log in the grinder and flew rapidly in the other direction. Because it was already the end of the day and the bits are usually not hard to find, the search for it was put off until the next day, Johansen said.

It appeared Saturday the homeowner and Johansen were settling the matter amicably between themselves.

Johansen said he's already met with and apologized to Willman, whom he already knew casually from the neighborhood, and agreed to make all the repairs necessary to his home.

"This has just never happened before," Johansen said. "It's such a fluke. But we take ownership and responsibility for it, and we'll do the right thing."

Johansen admitted such situations aren't always resolved as amicably as has been the case with he and Willman.

"I'm just happy and proud that he's the kind of person he is and that I'm the kind of person I am," Johansen said.

As unusual a circumstance as it was, Johansen said a recurrence would be physically impossible if the contents of the tub were more dense than on the day of the accident. From now on, the company will put previously processed material in the tub to keep loosened bits from flying away.

Tony Molinaro, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration's Great Lakes Region, said the FAA was initially contacted about identifying the part but concurred with the Carpentersville police's findings.

Metal object crashes through suburban roof
Friday, March 12, 2010

Quote
March 12, 2010 (CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill.) (WLS) -- A chunk of metal crashed right through the roof of a house in northwest suburban Carpentersville and now investigators are trying to figure out what it is and where it came from.

Homeowner Dane Willman was covering part of his roof with plastic Friday night to keep water from coming in through the hole he discovered when he got home. It was apparently created by a 3 pound steel piece about four inches long and 1.5 inches thick. He found it in his bathroom Friday afternoon, apparently from an airplane.
"I went outside and looked at the roof and saw there was a hole in the roof. And OK, things started making sense. Went back in the bathroom and saw that metal part laying on the ground and I said OK, something fell from an airplane," said Willman.

Amazing the Pieces that crashed through on March 12, 2010 CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill
And the piece which crashed  through N.J. business February 18, 2009 look almost identical?
JERSEY CITY Piece

Now compare to the piece in Carpentersville Ill.

The are melted have the same shape they had to fall from pretty high up to build up such heat. Are we seeing pieces of material used to build Secret Space Platforms? Did something fall off a transport ship to space? @ different years and different places the same thing falls from space? What could it be any ideas this is a good one Zorgon very interesting.

AN outback farmer is on a mission to identify a strange ball of twisted metal - purported to be fallen space junk - which mysteriously turned up on his remote property.

James Stirton of Cheepie, 130km from Charleville in southwestern Queensland, was heading out to feed cattle on his 40,500-hectare property when he came upon the bizarre-looking blackened ball.

"It was just off the road and I had been going up there every couple of days to feed cattle so I would be surprised if it had been there more than a week," Mr Stirton said.

"We got a shock when we first saw it. I had no idea what it was."

Suspecting it was a piece of space junk, Mr Stirton contacted the Aerospace Corporation - a research arm of the US Government - to get some sort of confirmation.

"I know about sheep and cattle but I don't know much about satellites," he said.

While a spokesman for Aerospace Corp. told NEWS.com.au it was still working to identify the object, aerospace industry sources who contacted Mr Stirton believe it to be part of a rocket launched at Cape Canaveral, Florida, in 1998.

Okay that is part one...  here is the next item... pay attention to the dates.

Flaming Space Junk Narrowly Misses Jet
28th March 2007

Quote
Pieces of space junk from a Russian satellite coming out of orbit narrowly missed hitting a jetliner over the Pacific Ocean overnight.

The pilot of a Lan Chile Airbus A340, which was travelling between Santiago, Chile, and Auckland, New Zealand, notified air traffic controllers at Auckland Oceanic Centre after seeing flaming space junk hurtling across the sky just five nautical miles in front of and behind his plane about 10pm last night.

According to a plane spotter, who was tuning into a high frequency radio broadcast at the time, the pilot "reported that the rumbling noise from the space debris could be heard over the noise of the aircraft.

"He described he saw a piece of debris lighting up as it re-entered (the earth's atmosphere).

"He was one very worried pilot, as you would imagine.

"Auckland is talking to (an) Aerolineas Argentinas (pilot) who is travelling (in the) opposite direction at 10 degrees further south asking if they wish to turn back to Auckland.

"They have elected to carry on at the moment.

"(It's) not something you come across everyday and I am sure the Lan Chile crew will have a tale to tell."

A spokesman for Airways New Zealand, which provides air navigation services across airspace known as the Auckland Flight Information Region, confirmed the incident this morning.

He said it occurred about 10 minutes after the Lan Chile flight had entered the Auckland Flight Information Region.

Airways New Zealand had been warned by Russian authorities almost two weeks ago that a satellite would be entering the earth's atmosphere sometime today between 10.30am and midday NZ time (6.30-8am WA time).

Airways New Zealand then provided that information to airlines and pilots that would be travelling in that region at that time.

They could then decide for themselves whether they wished to fly during that period.

"But clearly there has been a timing issue," the spokesman said.

"Either the time that was indicated to us was incorrect or the satellite de-orbited early."

Because the timing was wrong, the coordinates of where the satellite was supposed to enter the Earth's atmosphere also turned out to be incorrect.

A formal report about the incident has been logged and recordings of conversations between the pilot and air traffic controllers were expected to be handed over to investigators in the next few days, he said.

The Lan Chile flight landed safely at Auckland Airport early this morning, he said.

Falling Satellite Misses Jet by Seconds
March 29, 2007

Quote
A jet aircraft with 270 passengers on board was within 35 seconds of crashing into a blazing Russian satellite as it was falling back to earth yesterday.

Pilots of the A340-300 Airbus suddenly saw fiery debris streaking through the midnight darkness, directly ahead of their aircraft, which was travelling at about 800km/h (500mph). The falling metal, about five miles ahead, broke the speed of sound, causing a sonic boom that drowned out the jet’s four engines.

The incident happened over the Pacific Ocean, about four hours southwest of Auckland, about ten minutes after LAN Airlines’ flight LA801 entered the far western reaches of New Zealand’s oceanic flight information region.

Two Australian aviation buffs listening in to flight communications heard the obviously shaken captain of the South American aircraft make contact with New Zealand air traffic controllers to inform them of what had happened.

National commission of Nuclear Energy goes to analyze the part to check for radioactivity. Sanitary monitoring recommends that the people do not touch the material.

A sphere, of about one meter in diameter, fell in a farm, Montividiu (GO), this weekend. The object was not heavy and was kneaded with the fall. Inhabitants of the region had not observed the moment when the sphere appeared. The National Institute of Space Research (Inpe) believes the hypothesis of the material to be space garbage.

The agricultural producer Sebastião Marques of the Coast said that the unknown part was hot when it was found. The sphere fell about 150 meters from a house and attracted many curious onlookers. Some expressed fear, others came close to venture opinions on the origin of the unknown object.

A Technician of the Sanitary Monitoring of Goiás had been at the farm on monday (24). They had not collected the object, but they had recommended that the inhabitants do not touch the sphere. The National Commission of Nuclear Energy (Cnen) was informed and must order technician to the place and to analyze if the object has some radioactivity. [/color

When is a Meteorite not a Meteorite?

A mysterious metallic object that crashed through the roof of a New Jersey family's home in January 2007 was not a meteorite after all. Scientists say it is a stainless steel alloy that does not occur in nature and is most likely orbital debris, perhaps remnants of a satellite, a rocket or some other spacecraft component

The Peekskill meteor of 1992 was captured on 16 independent videos and then struck a car. Documented as brighter than the full Moon, the spectacular fireball crossed parts of several US states during its 40 seconds of glory before landing in Peekskill, New York. The resulting meteorite, pictured here, is composed of dense rock and has the size and mass of an extremely heavy bowling ball. If you are lucky enough to find a meteorite just after impact, do not pick it up -- parts of it are likely to be either very hot or very cold. In tonight's possibly spectacular Leonid meteor shower, few meteors, if any, are expected to hit the ground.

NASA - Hayabusa Spacecraft Returns Asteroid Artifacts From Space

Quote
Scientists involved with the first space mission attempting to sample asteroid surface material and return to Earth, have confirmed presence of particles collected from a small container aboard the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Hayabusa spacecraft.

On June 14, 2010 (local time), Hayabusa landed in the remote Woomera Test Range in South Australia, concluding a remarkable mission of exploration -- one in which NASA scientists and engineers played a contributing role.

Initial research from an electron microscope reveals about 1500 grains identified as rocky particles, and judged to be of extraterrestrial origin from the asteroid. Their size is mostly less than 10 micrometers. Handling these grains requires very special skills and techniques. JAXA is developing the necessary handling techniques and preparing the associated equipment for further analyses.

Stardust: A Mission With Many Scientific Surprises

Quote
The primary goal of the Stardust mission was to collect samples of a comet and return them to Earth for laboratory analysis. Comets are ancient bodies of frozen ice and dust that formed beyond the orbit of the most distant planet. They were expected to contain materials that the solar system formed from, preserved in ice for billions of years. When the international team of 200 scientists began examination of the returned particles, we found that the particles were indeed ancient building blocks of the solar system but the nature and origin of the particles was quite unexpected. Before the mission, there were very good reasons to believe that we knew what comets would be made of and there was a general expectation was that the particles collected from comet Wild 2 would be mainly be dust that formed around other stars, dust that was older than the Sun. Such particles are called stardust or pre-solar grains and this was the main reason why the mission was named Stardust.

Genesis capsule crash site (NASA) The sample return capsule from NASA's Genesis spacecraft crash-landed in the Utah desert Wednesday after its parachutes failed to deploy. The capsule, containing solar wind samples collected by the spacecraft during its mission, was designed to deploy a drogue parachute and later an parafoil, allowing it to glide slowly and be retrieved in midair by a helicopter. However, neither parachute appeared to deploy and the capsule hit the surface at the Utah Test and Training Range west of Salt Lake City at about 12:00 pm EDT (1600 GMT). Project officials said a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the capsule hit the ground at about 310 kmph, nearly twice the speed originally estimated. The capsule is partially buried in the ground and suffered extensive damage. None of the pyros designed to release the capsule's parachutes fired, officials said, raising suspicions that a battery problem first noted with the capsule in late 2001, shortly after launch, may have kept the parachutes from deploying. Workers plan to remove the capsule from the crash site later today and attempt to salvage the samples contained inside.

Heads up! That's the word from NASA today (Sept. 7) given the impending re-entry of a 6.5-ton satellite through Earth's atmosphere.

The huge Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere in an uncontrolled fall in late September or early October. Much of the spacecraft is expected to burn up during re-entry, but some pieces are expected to make it intact to the ground, NASA officials said.

The U.S. space agency will be taking measures to inform the public about the pieces of the spacecraft that are expected to survive re-entry.

A dead NASA satellite, called the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), is falling uncontrolled toward Earth and crash in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, Sept. 24. Agency officials are unable to pinpoint the exact time and location of the fall, but have said there is little risk of debris landing in populated areas. SPACE.com is providing full coverage of the UARS re-entry, including a look at the issues surrounding orbital debris and space situational awareness.

FINAL NASA Update (Sept. 27 PM):

"NASA's decommissioned Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite fell back to Earth at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California has determined the satellite entered the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean at 14.1 degrees south latitude and 189.8 degrees east longitude (170.2 west longitude). This location is over a broad, remote ocean area in the Southern Hemisphere, far from any major land mass. The debris field is located between 300 miles and 800 miles downrange, or generally northeast of the re-entry point. NASA is not aware of any possible debris sightings from this geographic area.

This is your source for official information on the re-entry of UARS. All information posted here has been verified with a government or law enforcement agency. This is NASA's final status report on the re-entry of UARS."

The Gods must be crazy: Metal ‘Teletubby head’ falls near Namibian village

Namibia, Desert Region : A handout photo provided by the National Forensic Science Institute shows a giant metallic ball of 1,1 metre in diameter weighing some 6 kilograms that fell out of the sky on a remote grassland in Namibia, prompting baffled authorities to contact NASA and the European space agency (ESA) on December 21, 2011. Mystery surrounds a 13-pound unidentified flying object which fell from the skies in northern Namibia. Despite efforts by researchers to identify its composition and origins, nobody has been able to establish where the metal sphere came from.

The ball, weighing 13 pounds (5.9 kilograms) and measuring 14 inches (35 centimeters) in diameter hit the ground next to the Namibian village of Omanatunga in the Omunsati region in the north of the country.

Locals reported hearing a series of loud explosions before the sphere was found by a farmer sometime between November 15 and November 20. The metal ball was found some 60 feet (18.3 meters) away from a small crater it is assumed to have created when it fell.

This really is space junk:
Russian space experts examine 200-kilo metal 'UFO dustbin lid' which fell from the sky in Siberia

The 'fragment' does not appear to come from any known missile or space technology. Russian space experts will make an announcement shortly

Space experts are trying to solve the mystery of ‘a UFO fragment’ which crashed close to a village in Siberia.

Locals insist the metallic object – which resembles a large rubbish bin – fell from the skies but initial checks by experts have concluded it is neither from a rocket nor a missile.

It is now under police guard as interest in the ‘visitor’ intensifies.

The six-foot metal object is now under police guard as the Russian space agency prepares to examine it

Weighing 200 kilograms and around two metres in height, locals fixed it onto a trailer and took across the snow to the village where local inspectors checked it.

‘The object found is not related to space technology. A final conclusion can be made after a detailed study of the object by experts,' said the Russian space agency Roscosmos.
