German teen found gold bar in lake

Quote
A German teen, 16-year-old,unexpectedly found a 500g bar of gold while swimming in a lake in the German Alps.

The German teen handed the gold bar to the police.
According to police officer, they are still trying to figure out where the gold bar comes from and how it got into the Koenigssee lake, a popular tourist destination near Berchtesgaden on the border with Austria.

The gold bar was said to be part of a legendary hoard that supposedly hidden in the lake, not far from Hitler’s Obersalzberg mountain retreat, according to rumors.

But German officials say the gold bar has nothing to do with the Nazis and was from a different time period.

Gold bar found by teenage girl in German lake
12 August 2015
From the section Europe
16-year-old holidaymaker has found a 500g (1lb) gold bar worth €16,000 (£11,500) while swimming in a lake in Germany, police say.

The teenager discovered the precious metal at a depth of about 2m (6.5ft) near the shore of Bavaria's Koenigssee lake on Friday.

She handed it into police who are now investigating where it came from and who owned it.

Police divers checked the area for more gold on Tuesday but found nothing.

The find revived rumours of Nazi gold supposedly lost in the lake, near Germany's southern border with Austria, but reports said the find was not connected to the Nazi era.

A youngster has made an sudden find while swimming in a lake within the German Alps: a 500-gram (17.6-ounce) bar of gold.

The gold bar that the 16-year-old girl discovered while swimming in Königssee lake in the German state of Bavaria weighs about 500 grams (around 1.1 pounds) and measures 6 centimeters (nearly 2.5 inches) in length.

A police spokesman said: “There is no Treasure of Silver Lake”, adding the area had been thoroughly searched and no more gold was found.

The 500g bar, which she found at a depth of two metres, is worth an estimated €16,000.

Rumors that Nazi gold was once lost in the lake have circulated in the past, but reports indicate that this discovery “was not connected to the Nazi era”, according to the BBC.

She handed it into police who are now investigating where it came from and who owned it.

A picture released by officers shows the bar, which is 6cm long, has several markings including references to its weight and fineness.

So far, nobody has stepped forward to claim the bar as theirs.

The Königssee is a natural lake in the extreme southeast Berchtesgadener Land district of the German state of Bavaria, near the Austrian border. Most of the lake is within the Berchtesgaden National Park.

Situated within the Berchtesgaden Alps in the municipality of Schönau am Königsee, just south of Berchtesgaden and the Austrian city of Salzburg, the Königssee is Germany's third deepest lake. Located at a Jurassic rift, it was formed by glaciers during the last ice age. It stretches about 7.7 km (4.8 mi) in the north-south direction and is about 1.7 km (1.1 mi) across at its widest point. Except at its outlet, the Königsseer Ache at the village of Königssee, the lake similar to a fjord is surrounded by steeply rising flanks of mountains up to 2,700 m (8,900 ft), including the Watzmann massif in the west. The railway Königsseebahn served the lake from 1909 until 1965. Its last tracks were dismantled during 1971, and the station in Berchtesgaden was demolished in 2012. The only remaining element of the railway is the Königsee station (now a restaurant). The track route is mostly used as a walking path.

The literal translation of the name, Königssee, appears to be "king's lake"; however while German: König does indeed mean "king", there had been no Bavarian kings since the days of Louis the German until Elector Maximilian I Joseph assumed the royal title in 1806. Therefore the name more probably stems from the first name Kuno of local nobles, who appear in several historical sources referring to the donation of the Berchtesgaden Provostry in the twelfth century; the lake was formerly called Kunigsee.

In 1944 a sub-camp of the Dachau concentration camp was located nearby where Heinrich Himmler had a residence built at Schönau for his mistress Hedwig Potthast.

The lake is noted for its clear water and is advertised as the cleanest lake in Germany. For this reason, only electric-powered passenger ships, rowing, and pedal boats have been permitted on the lake since 1909. Passenger services along the length of the lake, calling at various points, are operated by the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt company. Ports of call for this monopolist are: Seelände (Schönau), St. Bartholomä, Salet (mid-April to mid-October), and Kessel (on request). With perfect conditions, the longest tour takes two hours from Seelände to Salet. Swimming is permitted except in the lock area at Seelände.

Due to its picturesque setting, the lake and surrounding parklands are very popular with tourists and hikers. In addition, the lake's position surrounded by sheer rock walls creates an echo known for its clarity. On boat tours, it has become traditional to stop and play a flugelhorn or trumpet to demonstrate the echo. Formerly demonstrated by shooting a cannon, it can be heard to reverberate up to seven times. The trumpeter plays along with the returning sounds so it sounds like as many as seven players.

St. Bartholomä, a famous pilgrimage church with an inn nearby, is located on a peninsula about halfway down the western lake shore. The small Christlieger island is located near its northern end. South of the Königssee, separated by the Salet moraine, is the smaller Obersee lake with the 470 m (1,540 ft) high Röthbach waterfall. As there is no lakeside path on the steep shore of the Königssee, St. Bartholomä and the southern edge can only be reached by boat or via hiking trails up the surrounding mountains—except for harsh winters, when the lake freezes over. Stepping on the ice, however, can be fatal, as it was for a motorist in the winter of 1964, who on his way back from St. Bartholomä drowned in his VW Beetle. The car was not detected until 1997 at a depth of about 100 m (330 ft)

Schönau is surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps; it is the southeasternmost German municipality, bordering on the Austrian state of Salzburg at the Hoher Göll massif and the Steinernes Meer range. The present-day commune was formed in 1978 by the merger of the former Schönau and Königssee municipalities. Since 1984 the municipal area also comprises the formerly unincorporated Königssee lake, the famous St. Bartholomew's Church and the surrounding mountains from the east face of the Watzmann peak up to the Austrian border in the south, including the eastern part of Berchtesgaden National Park. From the lake, the Königsseer Ache creek runs down to Berchtesgaden.

Due to its picturesque setting Schönau largely depends on tourism. It is home to a bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track that is the oldest permanent track in the world, having been constructed in 1968. Passenger services along the lake from Schönau are operated by the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt company using electric boats.[2][3]

History
Schönau was first mentioned in a 1456 deed, then one of the eight historic localities (Gnotschaften) of the Berchtesgaden Provostry. After the secularisation of the Prince-Provostry, Schönau finally fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810
