Title: Kitty's get a book buddy program
Post by: A51Watcher on July 03, 2016, 04:32:45 pm
Apparently we have someone that sounds like they need a new kitty.

So I did a google image search of shelter kitties and I know no one can ever replace adventure kitty, but many of these look like they would like to have some adventures of their own too!

So cute!  All my kitties are rescues.  Several were left behind when home in my area were foreclosed.  Saige's family literally kicked her out for being pregnant.

Book Buddies

Children in grades 1-8 who are able to read at any level are invited to the shelter to read to the cats in our adoption room.

The program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals by providing socialization and human interaction.

Cats find the rhythmic sound of a voice very comforting and soothing.

Thanks Thor! How is your little one doing?

Haven't seen any pics for a while.

Shasta - That is great news.

All my doggies and cats have always been rescues too, they rock!

My sister went to the shelter one time and this all white fluffy kitty climbed up her pants, up her sweater and wrapped her arms around her neck and wouldn't let go for nuthin!

Sis said 'well looks like this is the one!'

She named her Gwinny btw.

 ;D

eta: She walked out of there with Gwenny still wrapped around her neck! LOL

I would love to have a cat (again), but the conditions are not good for that, as although we are three at home we have different work hours and it wouldn't be good to leave a new kitty alone.

Thank you.  It's pretty accurate.  My stress level has been about 23 on a scale of 1-10.  I refused to go to Universal Studios with my grandkids today, because they were so horrible at San Diego Zoo yesterday.

This is Smokey she was a runt wild kitty who was starving, we had to trap her and do all of the rescue stuff, shots, ear cut and such. We have a heated bed for her on the back porch, after years she now will step into the house until I get her food and she will ask to be scratched is I sit outside. If I stand she runs still. She was clearly traumatized and is very scared but she has a lot of safe room to roam here and is very happy.

I have not wanted to put her through adjusting by getting another she is really afraid of other cats for good reason, she is still very small and they usually attack her!

That is awesome Ellirium!

I find it is also a comfort when they pass before us, to remember that they could not have possibly had a better life than the one they had with us.  :D

Yep, I am finding out that many of us, including myself, are having to resist the temptation right now due to considerations of their best interest that indicate that the time is not quite right yet to take someone in right now.

Wow Ellirium, I can see you got very lucky too!

Thank you for sharing!

Midnight looks identical to the one we got for our step daughter.

She mainly stayed in high places like the back of the couch.

My Sheppard and Hound dog were not socialized to having a kitty around, and before long we heard a ruckus in another room, and sure enough they were both ganging up on her.

But she had the razor blades out and was showing them who was boss around here!

I would hold her on my lap and show them "See? nice kitty,we love her." but the sheppard would still try to put her in her mouth like a lion tamer, and I would scold her and say no.

After about 6 months they all cozied up and would sleep together.

In fact they all rode together in the cab of a Ryder truck coast to coast when I moved back east.

This is Stewey, my brother's rescue kitty who is a very personable loving sort, but very set in his ways.

He doesn't like daily house routines or situations interrupted or changed.

He gets grumpy and complains to let you know about it.  ;D

Stray 'Kitten' Rescued From Highway Isn't What She Seems
By Elizabeth Claire AlbertsJul. 29, 2016

A car slammed on the brakes in the middle of a highway. A kitten was crouched on the road — and if she didn't move, she was going to get hit.

The driver parked on the shoulder and ran into traffic to scoop the kitten up. At first glance, the animal looked like a normal house cat. Then the driver studied the kitten's wide hazel eyes and a short stumpy tail, and realized this was no ordinary kitten.

BIG CAT RESCUE

Later that evening, Jamie Veronica at Big Cat Rescue got a phone call to pick up a bobcat kitten at a veterinary hospital. When Veronica and her colleague arrived, the kitten was still taped up in a cardboard box the driver had placed the animal in … and she was not happy about it.

"We had to un-tape that box and put on some really thick work gloves so that we could transfer her to our crate," Veronica tells The Dodo. "She was very feisty right off from the start. She didn't want to be picked up, so she was hissing and growling and nipping at the gloves."

BIG CAT RESCUE

According to Veronica, the kitten's feistiness was a good sign: "We don't want them to be nice or friendly towards people. So she was being exactly what she should be — a wild bobcat."

The only thing that appeared wrong with the kitten was that she was a little underweight, possibly due to tapeworms or another parasite. Then, of course, there was the fact that the kitten had gotten separated from her mother.

BIG CAT RESCUE

"The whole way to the location where we picked up the kitten, the road is under construction," Veronica explains. "A lot of times, when they're doing a lot of development in the area, it displaces the animals that live in that forest. They start to move to try to find new territories to live in, and start crossing roads that they normally wouldn't, and during that time they can get easily separated from their parents if there are cars going by. But we don't know for sure. It could have been possible — maybe the mom and the other kittens were sitting in the woods."

BIG CAT RESCUE

The bobcat kitten, whom they named Spirit Feather, will spend about three months at Big Cat Rescue before she can be released. "Right now, we estimate her to be about 2 and a half months old," says Veronica. "She needs to be about 6 months before she can go back. But it all depends on growth rate — she needs to be a certain size so she can take down appropriate prey to survive."

BIG CAT RESCUE

While Spirit Feather waits to grow up, she has plenty to do. She spends a lot of time sleeping, sometimes snuggled up with her stuffed animal squirrel. But when she's awake, Spirit Feather loves tearing up cardboard boxes.

"We gave her a little cardboard box in her cage last night, so that she could get into it and feel like she had a little den," says Veronica. "When I came in this morning to take care of her, the whole box was shredded, and bitten and pulled apart to shreds, so she must have had a really good time last night!"

BIG CAT RESCUE

Spirit Feather also likes giving the Big Cat Rescue team attitude. "She's adorable until you have to try to move her to a different cage," says Veronica with a laugh. "Last night we had the veterinarian come out, so we had to pull out of the cage so we could do an exam, and do the blood test for her, and she was not happy about that. But she is really stinking cute."

BIG CAT RESCUE

Big Cat Rescue does more than rescue and rehabilitate big cats — they also try to educate the public about the animals they care for.

"Bobcats are often misunderstood," says Veronica. "We get a lot of calls from people who see a wild bobcat in the woods behind their house, and they're afraid of it. But they're really great neighbors to have. Bobcats don't want to come around people, they don't like to bother people's pets. But they do eat snakes and they eat rats — things that you don't want near your house."

Want to see this adorably feisty bobcat kitten yourself? You can watch Spirit Feather live.

Big Cat Rescue is hoping to build a new rehabilitation center for injured and orphaned bobcats. To help make this happen, you can donate here.

Really makes me hate highways, I get so tired of seeing dead babies out there. Here it is mainly possums and racoons some deer.

We live by the highway, one night we hear the most dreadful screaming, it was totally horrifying, never heard anything like it. it was in our trees and bushes next to the highway. i went online and found the sound was like a big cat, I think maybe it lost its baby or something with that horrible sad screaming!
Guess it could have been a mating call.It was WAY louder then this and going on and on, bone chilling sound!

My elder sister was born after an 8 months pregnancy, and besides being under weight, she had the idea of opening her mouth right before being born (and I think she also had the umbilical cord around her neck, but I'm not sure), so for the first week or so my family was worried, seeing if she would live or not. During all that time my mother's cat kept close to her, and he left only when she was out of danger.

Two weeks ago we had a "street cat" on out apartment for a few days, to get her spayed before returning her to the place she decided was her new home, the place where my younger sister works.

Although only for three days and affected by the fact that, being a street cat, she was a little restless on the final day, when she was feeling normal after the surgery, it was great to have a cat at home again. :)

Hell yes, they can pick up on energies in your house.

I will tell you a  little true story; it has to be on the net somewhere.

A young woman decided to adopt a blind kitten.  It slept with her every night.

When he was older, the woman said one night he started growling like a dog in their bed; then a guy stood in the doorway of her bedroom and started saying something and that blind cat, as quick as a flash, attacked the guy, biting, scratching and the guy did a runner.

He lived till he was 16, the cat that is; what a hero.

My two cats before Bear barely tolerated each other. I have no idea why.

We visited a friend with a cat who promptly attacked my younger cat, PeeWee. My older cat, Mrs. (She had two kittens when I adopted her.), immediately attacked my friend's cat in defense of PeeWee.

They will surprise the hell out of you every time.  :)

Bigsy I know cases like this one are the reason you sign petitions.

But next time you are hoping Nibiru comes and burns us all to a crisp, consider the kids earlier in this thread that volunteer to come read to the kitties.

They deserve to live and be carriers of light no?
