Mmorpg, mmo sim and mmorts.   The rpg side of it will contain pve and pvp facets.  I was trying to incorporate as many mmo types as i could.  Another idea I dug up out of ye olde rusty brain was related to something that happens on The Hub.  Did you read the intro all the way thru?   If not,  do so now and then let me know when you're done cause this next part is an extremely fun idea that hit me last night and I want to be sure you know what I'm talking about first.

What no space based combat and boarding parties? Seems funny we would all go to a space station for this, I would make a capital ship for each planet and the option to fly a small one manned fighter that may leave from a docking bay and infiltrate enemy ship. You might have sabatoging enemy ship as a payoff to your sucess and the enemy must repair the ship. After the ship loses certain amount of points it goes supernova for a while before the new one re-spawns. (Just an idea).

I tried an idea like this in one of my mods, to have a central shop and it was not very good as it was always very congested with people and resulted in a performance hit. You will want to try and keep people spread out. This will also keep people exploring rather than hanging out on the space station.

I would achieve this by using startrek-esque rank system where you would get missions and updates from commanding officers. OR do not affiliate and have instance based questing like in Oblivion where you pick up on a conversation and get a lead on a quest.

The sheer magnitude of what you are talking about is an entire development team and  years of intensive labor to create, not to mention all your issues with avoiding copywritten material in the game. Are the players also time travelling? Would this would be akin to Skyrim on an interplanetary level?  ???

If the game mechanics require a main homeworld and developing colonies offworld but linking them to the homeworld, how will the colonies progress be affected by the portal? Only the origional world would need go through the timeline as the technology would be made available via portal? otherwise what would stop medieval players from entering the portal and visiting the futuristic homeworld, or vice versa?

because the plan is to have the planets auto generate, and auto fill flora and fauna. which is why i need such a specific game engine.

Bethsda's engine used in Oblivion does this.

Ah here you go, check this out...

This tutorial is aimed at modders with moderate Construction Set skills. It attempts to explain how the Oblivion construction set auto-generates the lush and beautiful scenery for the game. Now, just to clarify a point before we move on - when you play the game, the scenery is not being auto-generated in real-time.

What i need is a hybrid engine, that auto generates, then allows modification of the environment by developers, and if necessary, by players who might have to modify the environment in some way as part of a quest line.

Yeah I don't know if anything that complex has been created yet, Sounds like someone is going to have to try and make a custom engine by using multiple engines together. I have seen more and more games having to do this to save themselves time. Even Skyrim is a mashup of 3 different engine types made into 1 hybrid.

Huh ?

Psst I don't model.. just make physical prototypes

you mean you make real 3d models?  oh that's useful.  those can be scanned and made into digital 3d models. :D

Been just trying to think of some of the more modern engines that might be able to do what you want... I have never tried using Cryengine but it looks promising:

After seeing this are you sure giving players access to terrain modification tools is such a good idea? What would stop people from totally messing up the planet by creating impassable areas?

Ok so you start off by character creation and pick a homeworld...then you get a plot of land on that homeworld you can customize and plop down buildings. I am assuming this would all be in 3rd person RTS/SIM style play until this point. Now I would think you would have the option to go 1st person and switch back to 3rd for the purpose of building placement and re-editing your land.

In first person you (as your sim) would perform tasks and get quests to advance your tech tree and progress from medeival (or whatever) to futuristic.

I am not sure how this part would work as players would be continously joining and leaving so there would be such a huge range of development between how one might progress individually compared to how the game would advance collectively.

This is completely different than just getting a parcel of land allowing the hardcore gamers to create vast empires and possibly controlling vast dominions of space. I would think this all would become a logistcal nightmare to micromanage from a sim level.

I think it would be more fun for the player if they only needed to focus on their parcel of land and use that as a home base. They could progress it as they see fit with technology aqquired from space travel, auctions etc. Perhaps have it so you start off with a little abode and then as you progress it builds into a town and then a city at which you could gain access to a central city portal where you would interact with other players (after you research enough) but I would not have it so they could access each other's parcel of land. Non controlable peons would scurry about populating your community then city and provide you with workers and scientists etc. They could even progress your technology tree while you are away on an adventure. The main city would have a direct portal to the galactic starbase where all of your intergalactic missions would be generated from.

This would allow the player to have a wide range of tasks and tech trees without becoming too burdened in any one particular type of gameplay style.

*UNDO EDIT:  Keeping this post of yours cause it's relevant and interesting!

:P I don't play subscription based MMOs so I have only tried DC Uinverse. It is hard to fathom all these types of gameplay mechanics working together.

Okay we moved most of my more detailed posts to a private forum for our development team to discuss privately.  As a result it may appear you are talking to yourself in the thread for the last few pages.  But we both know we discussed it and i responded to you :D

Anyway,  Captain Dave and Ellirium113 both have access to the private developers forum.  We can continue question and answers and critiques and so forth, there. This public forum will be for generating interest in the idea and picking up more development team members.
