Here's How Much $100 Is Worth In Each State

The value of $100 is not the same in every state.

The Tax Foundation on Monday published a new study that shows the real value of $100 in each state. Prices of goods often differ from state to state, and, as a result, $100 might not stretch as far in a state where goods are more expensive.

Price differences throughout the U.S. are considerable. "Real purchasing power is 36 percent greater in Mississippi than it is in the District of Columbia," according to the Tax Foundation. "In other words: by this measure, if you have $50,000 in after tax income in Mississippi, you would have to have after-tax earnings of $68,000 in the District of Columbia just to afford the same overall standard of living."

Using data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Tax Foundation put together this map:

Have they factored in things like no income tax in Nevada?

 ::)

Back in 1972 minimum wage was $1.72... a 2x4 pine stud cost $2.10  So you would have to work 1.22 hours to buy 1 standard 2x4

Today in Nevada minimum wage is $8.25...  a kiln dried Douglas fir 2x4 stud costs $2.19.  So today you would only have to work .26 hours to buy 1 standard 2x4
  (or you get 3.76 2x4's for one hour of work  almost 4 times the value of 1972 :D)

Buying power has many factors :P  I can buy small golden potatoes at Albertson for $1,79 a pound or I can go to the 99 Cent Only store and get 2,s pounds for $1.00 (yes they cheat a tad with rounding up because their prices are actually 99.99 cents :P )

But you see the point :D
