Have scientists discovered how to create downpours in the desert?

Technology created 50 rainstorms in Abu Dhabi's Al Ain region last year

Quote
For centuries people living in the Middle East have dreamed of turning the sandy desert into land fit for growing crops with fresh water on tap.

Now that holy grail is a step closer after scientists employed by the ruler of Abu Dhabi claim to have generated a series of downpours.

Fifty rainstorms were created last year in the state's eastern Al Ain region using technology designed to control the weather.

Plan: Scientists are attempting to make clouds in the desert to give man control over the weather

Quote
Most of the storms were at the height of the summer in July and August when there is  no rain at all.

People living in Abu Dhabi were baffled by the rainfall which sometimes turned into hail and included gales and lightening.

The scientists have been working secretly for United Arab Emirates president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

They have been using giant ionisers, shaped like stripped down lampshades on steel poles, to generate fields of negatively charged particles.

These promote cloud formation and researchers hoped they could then produce rain.

In a confidential company video, the founder of the Swiss company in charge of the project, Metro Systems International, boasted of success.

Helmut Fluhrer said: 'We have achieved a number of rainfalls.'

It is believed to be the first time the system has produced rain from clear skies, according to the Sunday Times

Feasibility Study for Rainfall Enhancement - UAE

Quote
Project Description

In late 2000, the government of the UAE, through the newly established Department of Water Resources Studies (DWRS) of the Office of His Highness the President, approached NCAR about developing and applying the technology of cloud seeding in the UAE.

A preliminary assessment identified some key areas of study required for assessing the efficacy and potential benefits of rainfall enhancement via hygroscopic seeding, including:

Collating existing data and collecting specific data on clouds and rainfall
Establishing the natural background and variability of aerosols in the region
Adapting and developing numerical models for simulating UAE clouds
Understanding the UAE hydrology sufficiently to assess the impact of rainfall on groundwater resources

These evolved into seven specific objectives that addressed two fundamental questions for the UAE:

Is the frequency of cloud occurrence sufficient to warrant the investment in a cloud seeding program?
Are the clouds that do occur amenable to hygroscopic seeding?

Thai king to help Queensland 'make rain'

The Queensland government's access to the rain-making technology, developed by King Bhumipol over the past 30 years, came a year after the state approached the royal household last year.

As a result, Queensland is set to be the first major region outside Thailand where the rain-making technology will be put into full effect.

A lot of cattle died in Tanzania last year because of the drought

Tanzania has been given permission to import rain-making technology from the king of Thailand, Thai media report.

The patented cloud-seeding technique involves aircraft releasing a chemical into clouds to induce rainfall.

A team of experts is to travel to the drought-prone East Africa nation to demonstrate it and train people, the Thai agriculture minister confirmed.

Last year, failed rains left millions of Tanzanians near starvation and affected electricity supplies.

The director of Thailand's Bureau of Royal Rainmaking Research said he was hopeful the technology would work successfully in Tanzania.

This automated high output seeding system allows flares to be ignited from remote locations, using customized software and cell phone communications. Each flare burns for approximately 5 minutes, releasing a significant amount of seeding material. Pourous metal cylinders called spark arrestors cover the flares.

An obvious hole in a stratus deck due to cloud seeding with aircraft, using dry ice as a seeding agent. This is an example of cold cloud seeding, where supercooled cloud droplets are converted into ice crystals, which then precipitate out of the cloud deck. And video effects, which enables citizens of a state registration and publication on «youtube» debate among citizens, they appear as a small cloud which glide out of the sky to fall on the ground, before the clash with the iron fence divides it into parts.

According to a photographer, video clip, which monitored the scene from its inception, has paid surprising event to stop his car near the cloud, and ask one of the workers passing through the region that depicts his mobile phone, standing near the cloud, and then went to the location, and began Bmlamsthe his hand, saying that what happened is « One wonders ».
