Not that long ago.... in Medieval Tymes...  Castles were made of stone...

Temperatures were mild...

Then came THE MINI ICE AGE...

And those castles became drafty and cold  and damp...

So... they invented TAPESTRIES  to hang on the walls to stop the drafts..

they invented WINDOW PANES to stop those cold winds

they invented FIRE PLACES to take the chill off (and Bed Warmers :P )

And we saw the influx of Tudor style 5 layer heavy clothing  (Trust me that stuff is HOT in vegas :P )

Yes but we are talking of SEA ICE not changing the level  and ArMaP's layman example is PERFECT as I forgot that the fresh water ice comes from salt water so it would not change at all :P Good one ArMaP  :D

IF you count all the ice and snow on LAND melting into the oceans then yes, naturally there would be an increase

But that is not happening
Sea ice may not be changing the level but the sea level is rising.  It has risen by 2.6 inches in about ten years...

It is also wrong to say that the Arctic is all sea.  Greenland (a huge Island) is partly in the Arctic and the glaciers there are retreating...

Quote
Why Are Glaciers Melting from the Bottom? It’s Complicated

Glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica are losing ice at alarming rates, and warmer air isn’t the only cause.  Scientists increasingly agree that warm ocean water is seeping beneath the ice and melting it from the bottom up.

It’s a growing problem in Greenland, scientists say, and it may already be the dominant driver of melting glaciers in Antarctica.

Antarctic Glaciers Lost Stunning Amount of Ground in Recent Years

Linked to a warming ocean, ice retreat was more rapid than even at the end of the last Ice Age

Antarctic Glaciers Lost Stunning Amount of Ground in Recent Years

An ambitious new mapping project has given scientists one of their most complete looks yet at the movement of glaciers all around Antarctica.

The key finding: Far more glaciers are losing ground than gaining ice.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/antarctic-glaciers-lost-stunning-amount-of-ground-in-recent-years/

It looks pretty likely that sea level rises are due to retreating ice.  I know USA is making a lot from oil but lets have some balance here... :P

Colorado is expecting a bad wildfire season.  We already had one today, down by Larkspur.  The winter has been so dry, that Medano Creek at the Sand Dunes is not expected to have any surge flow. That's ine of our yearly outings, but it looks like we're skipping it this year.

24.5 inches??

12 inches = 1 foot

Are those people only a foot and a half tall

The only time I personally saw snow as deep as the snow in that photo was while traveling from Reno to Oakland CA and the interstate that runs through the Donner Pass had 6 FEET of snow.

**EDIT: article says it's from a "snow drift". I didn't R-E-E-D the article before I posted.  :-[ ;D

Warmer-than-normal temperatures to continue in Europe

Above average temperatures are set to continue in most of Europe during the September to November period, forecasts by The Weather Company showed on Tuesday.

"We've just experienced the warmest May-July period (ever) in many parts of northern and western Europe, including the UK," said Todd Crawford, chief meteorologist at The Weather Company.

Warmer-than-average conditions will continue, especially in northern Europe, through to November.

"The very early evidence suggests that we could have some significant cold weather, however, especially in the back half of winter," Crawford added.

The Weather Company, owned by IBM, provides weather forecasts aimed at the commodities and energy sectors.

California’s summer of deadly wildfires and dangerous heatwaves will soon be the new normal if nothing is done to stop climate change, a report released on Monday warns.

But Goode said he was not sure whether to be hopeful. “I won’t say that I’m hopeful. I would like to feel hopeful, but I don’t see it happening right now,” he said. “I don’t see the politicians stumbling over themselves to make that change.”

Hot, cold, hot... :)

From a heatwave to snow storms, parts of Italy and Austria have seen a dramatic shift in weather over the weekend.

At Obertauern, a ski resort in Salzburg, almost 40 centimetres of snow fell with temperatures dropping to 2°C, and nearly -1°C in other parts.

In Schladming in northwest Austria, between 25 and 30 centimetres of snow fell.

Although snow in Austria in August is not uncommon, the quantity of snow this year is unusual, according to a local hut owner.

Pordenone in northeast Italy experienced strong storms while residents at Cortina d'Ampezzo, a ski resort in northern Italy, was coated with 10 centimetres of snow on August 26.

Rifugio Scoiattoli, an alpine lodge in the Dolomites, was also covered in snow.

The snow may be short-lived, however, with temperatures rising as high as 30 degrees in Austria this week according to weather forecasts.

NOAA Reports Summer 2018 Fourth Hottest on Record
Nina Godlewski  3 hrs ago

Quote
The summer of 2018 was one for the history books—at least those that cover temperature records across the United States.

The meteorological summer runs from the start of June to the end of August and the temperatures during those months in 2018 made it the fourth hottest year on record. In the contiguous United States, the average temperature through the summer was 73.5 degrees Fahrenheit—2.1 degrees above the average temperature, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Many states saw sweltering conditions through the summer, some of which have continued into September. Much of the Mid-Atlantic region and parts of the Northeast were still under a heat advisory Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Some schools were even letting students out early due to the heat.

A map of the United States shared by NOAA shows that the mean temperature percentiles in some parts of the country reached points of record heat. California, Arizona, New Mexico and other states all saw record-breaking temperatures through the months of the meteorological summer.

Even parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut saw some record-breaking temperature means for the summer, the map shows. Those record-breaking temperatures are indicated by the color red on the map. Very few spots around the country saw temperatures below average, while some small patches of the country saw temperatures were near average.

The majority of the map is covered in a light orange or orange color, indicating that the mean temperature was above average in those areas.

This year’s summer tied the summer of 1934 for fourth warmest in the past 124 years and helped push the temperature for the year to date up even further. As of Thursday when NOAA released the information, the average temperature for the year to date in the U.S. was 55.7 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 1.8 degrees above the normal average, making it the 10th warmest year-to-date on record, according to NOAA.

Precipitation over the month of August was just slightly above average, with 2.99 inches of rain, or .37 inches above the average for August. That makes it the 20th wettest August on record in part due to the East Coast and Great Plains where the slow-moving storms brought above-average precipitation and in some cases record-breaking precipitation., according to NOAA.

August may have come to a close but the heat is sticking around, at least through the end of the week in some areas, with the potential to drive up the average further.

Red-hot planet: All-time heat records have been set all over the world during the past week
By Jason Samenow
July 5

Quote
(This article, originally published Tuesday, was updated Wednesday to add all-time heat records at Mount Washington, N.H., and Tbilisi, Georgia set since Monday. On Thursday, the story was updated to include information on heat-related deaths in Canada and extraordinary heat in Siberia. On Friday, it was updated to add the likely all-time heat record in Africa and Southern California.)

From the normally mild summer climes of Ireland, Scotland and Canada to the scorching Middle East to Southern California, numerous locations in the Northern Hemisphere have witnessed their hottest weather ever recorded over the past week.

Large areas of heat pressure or heat domes scattered around the hemisphere led to the sweltering temperatures. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports the heat is to blame for at least 54 deaths in southern Quebec, mostly in and near Montreal, which endured record high temperatures.

In Northern Siberia, along the coast of the Arctic Ocean – where weather observations are scarce – model analyses showed temperatures soaring 40 degrees above normal on July 5, to over 90 degrees. “It is absolutely incredible and really one of the most intense heat events I’ve ever seen for so far north,” wrote meteorologist Nick Humphrey, who offers more detail on this extraordinary high-latitude hot spell on his blog.

On Thursday, Africa likely witnessed its hottest temperature ever reliably measured. Ouargla, Algeria soared to 124.3 degrees (51.3 Celsius). If verified, it would surpass Africa’s previous highest reliable temperature measurement of 123.3 degrees (50.7 Celsius) set July 13, 1961, in Morocco.

No single record, in isolation, can be attributed to global warming. But collectively, these heat records are consistent with the kind of extremes we expect to see increase in a warming world.

Let’s take a tour around the world of the recent hot-weather milestones.

North America
A massive and intense heat dome has consumed the eastern two-thirds of the United States and southeast Canada since late last week. It’s not only been hot but also exceptionally humid. Here are some of the notable all-time records set:

The University of California Los Angeles set its all-time high-temperature of 111 degrees on July 6, along with several other locations in Southern California.
Denver tied its all-time high-temperature record of 105 degrees on June 28.
Mount Washington, N.H., tied its all-time warmest low temperature of 60 degrees on July 2.
Burlington, Vt., set its all-time warmest low temperature ever recorded of 80 degrees on July 2.
Montreal recorded its highest temperature in recorded history, dating back 147 years, of 97.9 degrees (36.6 Celsius) on July 2. The city also posted its most extreme midnight combination of heat and humidity.
Ottawa posted its most extreme combination of heat and humidity on July 1.
[Oppressive heat dome engulfs the Northeast — and it will spread west this weekend]

View image on Twitter

Europe
Excessive heat torched the British Isles late last week. The stifling heat caused roads and roofs to buckle, the Weather Channel reported, and resulted in multiple all-time record highs:

In Scotland, Glasgow had its hottest day on record, hitting 89.4 degrees (31.9 Celsius). Previously, it was reported that Scotland set its hottest temperature on record of 91.8 degrees (33.2 Celsius) on June 28 in Motherwell, about 12 miles southeast of Glasgow. However, upon further evaluation, the U.K. Met Office determined the record was invalid due to an artificial heating source near the temperature sensor.
In Ireland, on June 28, Shannon hit 89.6 degrees (32 Celsius), its all-time record.
In Northern Ireland,
Belfast hit 85.1 degrees (29.5 Celsius) on June 28, its all-time record.
Castlederg hit 86.2 degrees (30.1 Celsius) on June 29, its all-time record.

Eurasia
A large dome of high pressure, or heat dome, has persistently sat on top of Eurasia over the past week, resulting in some extraordinarily hot weather:

Tbilisi, Georgia: On July 4, the capital city soared to 104.9 degrees (40.5 Celsius), its all-time record.
Yerevan, Armenia: On July 2, the capital city soared to 107.6 degrees (42 Celsius), a record high for July and tying its record for any month.
Several locations in southern Russia topped or matched their warmest June temperatures on record on the 28th.

Middle East
As we reported, Quriyat, Oman, posted the world’s hottest low temperature ever recorded on June 28: 109 degrees (42.6 Celsius).

These various records add to a growing list of heat milestones set over the past 15 months that are part and parcel of a planet that is trending hotter as greenhouse gas concentrations increase because of human activity:

In April, Pakistan posted the hottest temperature ever observed on Earth during the month of 122.4 degrees (50.2 Celsius).
Dallas had never hit 90 degrees in November before, but it did so three times in four days in 2017.
In late October 2017, temperatures soared to 108 degrees in Southern California, the hottest weather on record so late in the season in the entire United States.
On Sept. 1, 2017, San Francisco hit 106 degrees, smashing its all-time hottest temperature.
In late July 2017, Shanghai registered its highest temperature in recorded history, 105.6 degrees (40.9 Celsius).
In mid-July, Spain posted its highest temperature recorded when Cordoba Airport (in the south) hit 116.4 degrees (46.9 Celsius).
In July 2017, Death Valley, Calif., endured the hottest month recorded on Earth.
In late June 2017, Ahvaz, Iran, soared to 128.7 degrees Fahrenheit (53.7 Celsius) — that country’s all-time hottest temperature.
In late May 2017, the western town of Turbat in Pakistan hit 128.3 degrees (53.5 Celsius), tying the all-time highest temperature in that country and the world-record temperature for May, according to Masters.

Last years it was very gentle most places it occurred and the water went out more than rushed in.  But it could be considerably stronger this year and have faster onset with greater seismic and volcanic activity beginning about the 13th September and lasting a full week. This will be phase one of the big effects of this complex passage we enter now. Good luck.

it's 6 pm on a sunday and has been raining since last evening
my rain gauge only goes to 5 inches..i just dumped it out so i could keep track of how much more rain is still falling

it's right at 57 F and has been all day .. so not real cold but the kind of damp that seeps into your body
we are safe here but the basement on the older side of the house has a running small stream thru the 1939 yr old blocks and behind the garage looks like a lake

a whole bunch of sparrows have taken up huddling on the back porch to stay dry and are leaving prove of being there
and my only exercise was running out to chase a squirrel stealing butternuts from  my little green house..
sigh  so i shut the vents and closed the door

the football game that would have at least involved a few hours of watching something other than the rain gauge was damn messy with  a tie score ending.. and did not hold my interest for long

i have finished the sudoku book and am now on here reading
what the hell did they do on that arc for 40 days ?  ?
