Going Batty
« on: July 06, 2016, 01:29:25 am »
I took my grandkids to a live bat show at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science a while back.  I have always liked bats, and didn't think they deserved the vilification that they often receive.

During the presentation,  I learned that bats are very effective natural pollinators.  I also learned that supporting our bat populations could dramatically decrease our need for chemical pesticides.  One bat can eat up to 1000 mosquitoes in an hour.  Support your local bat colony!

Bad news everyone, get rid of sticky fly traps. My neighbor has many animals and flies so I put them up near the back door. Well one morning last week there was a baby bat on the sticky strip! :(

We soaked it off and cleaned it with mineral oil (suggested on a website) then washed and dried, put it in a box and the next day it was growing stronger could slightly move the wings moving around licked it's wing. I read how to feed it milk and used a paintbrush and it sucked it eagerly! The pottying it part was where I think we lost the battle, babies like baby puppies need to have warm moist swabs on the genitals or they cannot potty and will die. The Mothers lick them very hard to imitate with a swab when the little bat attached it's feet to anything near.

I tried by he would not go. The next day I had hoped it would be strong enough to put on the shed roof and see if Mom found it but it was dead the next day! :(

I have not seen a single bat for years I suppose it came from up in a tall tree as it was to young to actually fly I think. No way to know but yes bats are wonderful creatures and this little boy was so sweet and cute!

I'm sure his sweet little bat spirit crossed the Rainbow Bridge peacefully,  knowing that someone had cared enough to try.

I know you are right!
I was already attached, my sister was really angry because I let it crawl off my glove it was so eager to eat :-( She was worried about rabies.
