California Fires Oct/Nov 2017 - Natural or manmade?
« on: May 18, 2018, 11:37:44 pm »
Hi Gang,

I have had a look but I didn't see a thread on this topic - (If I have posted in the wrong area I apologise)

I am not sure of the veracity of the images I am going to ping on here, but some of the trees in the images look to be untouched while the homes are totally destroyed, and cars look like they have been toasted by a nuke or high energy source of some description -

And this interview was interesting -

Was there anything more to the fires than was talked about by lamestream media ?  :-\

From what I have seen through the years of forest fires in Portugal (last year had the worse ever recorded), the trees that are almost not affected are the ones native to the area. In Portugal, some decades ago, people started planting eucalyptus instead of the original pines, as eucalyptus grows very fast and is one of the few trees that, after being cut, grows back to its original size in a few years. The paper industry loves eucalyptus, so people replaced pines (with slow growth but fetching a good price, specially for furniture industries) with the fast growing eucalyptus. Some people were even caught setting fire to their pine woods to replace them with eucalyptus.

The problem is that pines are native to this area and are (up to a point) fire resistant, specially those high, thin pines that have no branches at low height, so the only thing affected by a ground fire is the trunk, covered with a bark that looks similar to cork (with non-flammable gas "pouches") and that takes a long time to catch fire. Some other trees, specially in populated areas, like fruit trees, are not from this region, so they are not capable of resisting the common forest fires that this region has.

It looks like the situation in California is similar, so I wouldn't be surprised with some trees being very affected by the fires while others are not. Houses made of wood and cars are not really made to resist fire.

PS: after saying all that, I think we have here on Pegasus someone that would be able explain explain better the situation and tell if I'm right or wrong, thorfourwinds. :)
