SSERVI
« on: November 17, 2016, 04:22:15 pm »
https://sservi.nasa.gov/articles/loirp-releases-four-new-images/

The above was posted several months ago.
I looked forward to viewing these very high res photos of Copernicus crater. My extra interest in this was John Lear sent me 33 cd's with all his areas of interest of the Moon. In particular Copernicus. I wanted to compare what John sent me to the ones NASA was touting of removing artifacts with their latest software.
Below is a brief overview from the SSERVI website.

SSERVI Overview
Recognizing that science and human exploration are mutually enabling, NASA created the Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI) to address basic and applied scientific questions fundamental to understanding the Moon, Near Earth Asteroids, the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos, and the near space environments of these target bodies. As a virtual institute, SSERVI funds investigators at a broad range of domestic institutions, bringing them together along with international partners via virtual technology to enable new scientific efforts.

Mission Statement

SSERVI fosters collaborations within and among competitively selected domestic teams, the broader exploration science community, and multiple international partners in order to:

Advance basic and applied research fundamental to lunar and planetary science, and advance human exploration of the solar system through scientific discovery;
Conduct and catalyze collaborative research in lunar and planetary science, enabling cross-disciplinary partnerships throughout the science and exploration communities;
Provide scientific, technical, and mission-defining analyses for relevant NASA programs, planning, and space missions as requested by NASA;
Explore innovative ways of using information technology for scientific collaboration and information dissemination across geographic boundaries;
Train the next generation of scientific explorers through research opportunities, and encourage global public engagement through informal programs, and participatory public events.

When i went to the download page it seemed none of the links worked.
I contacted SSERVI and specifically:

yvonne.pendleton
gregory.schmidt
doris.daou

I was told that the problem would be fixed in a week or so.
After waiting quite a long time there was still no resolution to the problem.

I then received and email from:

Nejad, Ashcon
Sep 8

to Joseph, me, Gregory
Dear John,

Sincerest apologies for the continued inconvenience this issue has caused.

We've gone through a rather massive server and data repository overhaul over the past month, and we are still in the process of updating legacy data files. For now, I was able to track down one of the LOII_162_H images, linked here:
http://loirp.arc.nasa.gov/loirp/jpeg/LOII_162_H.jpg

For the most current and available LOIRP images, please visit the LOIRP website directly at:
http://loirp.arc.nasa.gov

In regards to the SSERVI web page article, we'll update that with new image links as soon as possible. You'll see image thumbnails embedded on the page once they have been identified and verified from the servers.

Once again, apologies for the inconvenience. I'll be reaching out to you personally with the updated links as soon as I can.

All the best,
Ashcon

Ashcon has been the only person that has since replied.
But it is now the middle of November and still nothing.
The page is still up advertising these images.

Not even the images on that page work.

It looks like a typical change of servers ignoring whatever they had in the old one, so nothing works.  ::)

It's been that way for months. Ashcon, the one guy I think they assigned to me, lol, to keep from bothering the chiefs, has sent me a couple of files but not the ones advertised on their page. Still waiting on a reply to my last query. :-\

Update:

I've sent several more emails to SSERVI and no answers.
I logged in to the page where they advertised these images and the link no longer exists.
So I went on the SSERVI Facebook page and posted the following:

If you can't read the post, here is a copy of what I wrote:

I have tried for several months now to access images that were advertised on SSERVI page:http://sservi.nasa.gov/articles/loirp-releases-four-new-images/
These images were touted as very high resolution images and I had looked forward to downloading these images with great anticipation. Well after several weeks of trying to access these images (the image links simple returned you to the homepage), I reached out to several people at SSERVI. I won't post their names, but I was assured in several emails that it was a reorganization of server files problem and that it would be fixed forthwith. I have continued to reach out to the SSERVI team and was told it would take a little longer. The holidays being what they are, I waited and waited and then my emails were not answered as to when these images would be made available as ADVERTISTED!.......Nothing....Now the original page with these images listed is no longer available!....So I'm reaching out once again, this time on your Facebook page, to please make these images available to the public. Thank you for all your efforts.

Is it possible that they KNOW you had Q Clearance and are an image expert and now 'working' for Pegasus?

lol don't know about that. But my original emails where signed:

So they knew who I was and still answered me. At first.

So, is it "ignore him and hope he goes away?"  Or has the whole thing been kicked higher up the food chain?

Shasta
could be either one; or some dummy when they were transferring the stuff to the new server probably hit the wrong button and deleted everything... ::)

That hadn't occurred to me.  It should have, given the number of things that I have to rewrite when our system at work gets indigestion.

So the main page works

https://sservi.nasa.gov/

I did a search for LOIRP new releases and get this page:

Quote
The Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project based at NASA Ames Research Center is a sort of archeology of the digital age, or “techno-archeology” as the team calls it. They have 1,478 tape canisters from NASA’s unmanned Lunar Orbiter moon missions in 1966 and 1967. The images were used to map NASA’s 1969 moon landing but were set to be destroyed when LOIRP lead Dennis Wingo and his partners rescued them in 2007. There are 48,000 pounds of film — the entire moon in 900 billboard size photos taken by the unmanned Lunar Orbiter spacecraft. Acting as something akin to a mini-Fotomat and TV station, the orbiter took Polaroid-like photos of the moon, scanned them and beamed them back to one of three stations on Earth where they were recoded on film.

Not only did the team figure out how to get the images off the film, it turned out that the 1966 images of the moon’s surface, once digitally remastered, were of exceptional quality, comparable to NASA’s most recent images of the moon.

Now the LOIRP team has just released newly reprocessed images! You can view and download the images at http://www.moonviews.com/, the official website of the Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project (LOIRP).

Z that page has always been there. From the beginning when they first posted about the high resolution images they were going to post which they couldn't find.

Considering that LOIRP has stopped updating their site two years ago, I suppose they are a little lost, if they still send people to the LOIRP's site.

subject:   High resolution images advertised on SSERVI website

Greetings to all

I have had numerous conversations with several people on this list about the high resolution images advertised on the SSERVI website.
I was assured that the problem would be fixed shortly as there was a major re-organization of files/servers on your end.
First I was told a few days. Then a week, which turned into months which eventually turned into ignoring me altogether to completely removing the page/link from the website.

If this is the responsible/professional response we can expect from NASA/GOV employees, then I think it's time to return all the money that the government allocates to your salaries.
All joking aside, I find it reprehensible and completely irresponsible conduct on your part to engage in this 'ignore it and it'll go away' attitude/conduct.

A simple 'we are unable to find the images in question and we will no longer advertise their availability on our website'.

Very, very disappointed
