I've given in, Pegasus.
« on: March 12, 2018, 10:47:24 pm »
I have a somewhat pathological phobia of mobile phones, particularly smartphones.  I've owned two of them in the past, but generally threw them away within 24 hours of purchase.  There are truthfully few forms of technology in existence, that in the past at least, I have felt more fear and loathing towards.

Yet today, I finally decided to cease agonising over it, and purchased a Doogee S60 from Ebay.  I have been painfully socially isolated for far too many years; and I've realised that, despite how smartphone averse I might be, that desperately needs to change.

I did probably six hours of research into different phones to try and figure out the right one to get.  The Doogee S60 is considered marginally unfavourable in terms of its' processor, camera, and single external speaker, yet I felt that its' other benefits outweighed those disadvantages.

a}  I am completely new to taking photos anyway, so definitely don't need the world's most powerful camera.

b}  At 5580 mAh, its' battery size is very mid range, if not the biggest out there, and will apparently give me 9-12 hours of continual operation.

c}  Most importantly, this is a phone which will not break if I drop it.  I've seen lots of people with phones where the glass screen always has this big crack right in the middle of it; I've decided that I don't want that to happen to me.  I can, however, be a very clumsy and unco-ordinated person, which means that this phone is going to get dropped on the floor or sent flying off my table, even if completely unintentionally.

d}  At $380 AUD (apparently about $240 USD) I feel that this is fairly decent value.  It isn't an IPhone X, and I didn't want it to be, but it will get me into the proverbial game.

I know some people are likely to respond to this with the suggestion that I'm about to become a drone; and truthfully my fear of that has been the main cause of my refusal to buy a phone before this point.  I've seen the photos of people who sit face to face at tables and don't say a word, while texting each other on their mobile phones.  I've also read about car drivers crashing while texting, people taking their mobile phone to bed and to the toilet, and seen photos of teething babies gnawing on mobile phones in their cots.  When it comes to mobile phone horror stories, if you've seen it, then chances are I have too.  I've spent years regarding them as a literally supernaturally evil piece of technology.

The thing that I realised recently though, is that in terms of being a drone, I'm already there.  I usually spend probably 98% of my waking time on a computer, and I've done that for the majority of my life, now.  So getting a phone isn't going to tie me more securely to the technology than I already am.  What it will do, however, is enable me to get up, move around, and finally go outside the various bedrooms that I've now largely kept myself confined to for 25 years.

I agree. A device that was marketed as a way to keep us closer together has done just about everything but that. With exception of the occasional car crash, it doesn't really bring us together in person. A few years ago my wife and I would talk all the way through dinner. Now, since we text each other all day, by the time we get home from work, we barely say much at all. 200 texts a day and when I finally see her, it's just like "hi" because I'm not gonna ask how her day was because she's been telling me about it all day. We go out to dinner and there's 8 people sitting at a table and they are all staring at their hand. I don't even have fakebook or anything like that because I don't wanna know what everybody is doing every minute. When we talked about it my wife just said yeah, that's true. Now we just text an occasional hey, unless her company needs a favor from mine, and we no phones at the dinner table for us or the kids, and things have dramatically changed. Off the record though, if you have Nintendo roms, I don't see a reason to leave the house lol

I think I will be recording myself a bit.  There are already plans for a recorded visit to the local supermarket, complete with idiotic voice commentary.  I think I'm going to have to work on a script for that.  Now that I've got good upload speed, I should probably work on some more Minecraft videos as well, come to think of it.

Do you have a cell phone space otter? If you don't, seriously (no sarcasm here) that's impressive.

That's what happens when I write a post in a hurry. :)

Obviously, she has a pump in her head, not in someone else's head.  ;D
