Basically its mainly carbon dioxide, methane and CFCs that are incresed by humans.  The other problem is that carbon dioxide is metabolised by trees and we have destroyed most of the forests meaning the carbon dioxide will stay in the atmosphere longer.

You do know that there is a lot of atmosphere so a small amount of Greenhouse gases have a lot of effect?

Total mass of atmosphere:  5.1 x 1018 kg (5,100,000,000,000,000,000kg)
see http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/factsheet/earthfact.html

That is five thousand one hundred, million, million tonnes of atmosphere.

Even 3% of that is one hundred and fifty-three million million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The figures are mind bogglingly large.

Norval, you obviously are unaware of the conundrum of the physics equation of climate change - the amount of negative/harmful impact of a gas upon the Earth is indirectly proportional to the lesser amount of a gas in the atmosphere. Such is clearly shown with Ozone @ whopping 0.01% of the 0.1% of the Trace Gases in the atmosphere, and it is rated as being very harmful to the planet. Indeed, Carbon Dioxide is a bit more plentiful @ 93.497% of the 0.1% Trace Gases, but it likewise is calculated to be even more harmful to the planet.  :P

Yes, people have built major careers upon their understanding of reverse-gas climate change calculations, and be-damed if truth or fact of error will change their minds.

I do suspect that small/trace amounts of non-standard stuff (poisonous, radio active, etc) could be released into the atmosphere that could easily destroy all living beings, as well as the planet, but such is not likely for the standard gases IMO. :)

Another chart with slightly more detail of the trace gases.

, , , , , , , .03 % for carbon dioxide, and 20+ % oxygen, damn, sure sucks to be a tree.  :P

Pimander said, "Even 3% of that is one hundred and fifty-three million million tonnes of carbon dioxide".

According to the numbers noted, the atmospheric makeup of carbon dioxide is not 3%, but rather it is 0.03% according to Norval's pie chart.  ;)

Ok divide it by a hundred and its still a hell of a lot.  My point isn't what the exact numbers are but that the amount of carbon dioxide is enormous.

(I knew I'd make an error rushing through that calculation and people would ignore my point.  ;D )

If Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases do cause global warming, surely the point is that it appears to be rising because of human activity.  The link looks pretty strong and we know we are releasing millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide and deforesting.

We can measure carbon dioxide levels and the link with human activity is uncanny.

hmmmm Pi, just an idea for yah, it might be better if you picked images that would be available for a longer time?

Just a suggestion. :)

I'm trying to figure out why Homo sapiens thinks it can control the climate of an entire planet.

I'm pretty sure we're riding the climate rocket. Nothing we do is going to stop it.

Irene,
I have to agree with Fort on this mater, as your quote says,

""I think we are property." - Charles Fort"

And, as such, I do think the "owner" is quite capable of adjusting Earth's ecology as, and when, necessary. Thanks for your input.   :)

My point of view is that all this nonsense about climatic change being directly linked to Humons and our industry is a load of bovine feces; one volcano, Mt. Pinatubo, pumped more crap into the atmosphere in 3 days than all the combined emissions of humanity for the last 200 years; so what are those mouthy turkeys going to do, put a catalytic converter on active volcanoes? Really?
