The Abyss - a timely movie with a message
« on: March 22, 2014, 12:02:46 pm »
We were warned...what a timely movie.   :P

Another of our favorite films just came on the tube today, and another one where the set was fraught with interesting controversy...our info from the inside. Our friend (and partner in Malibu Jet Ski) Christopher Murphy (we just spoke to him in sunny California) as Schoenick, a US Navy SEAL, bought a shiny new Porsche courtesy of the largess of James Cameron.

The film was shot at the Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant outside Gaffney, South Carolina. It had been abandoned after Duke Power spent $700 million in construction. The underwater sequences were filmed in two specially constructed tanks.

The first one held 7.5 million US gallons (28,000 m3) of water, was 55 feet (18 m) deep and 209 feet (70 m) across. At the time, it was the largest fresh-water filtered tank in the world. Additional scenes were shot in the second tank that held 2.5 million US gallons (9,500 m3) of water.

The turbine pit, which was a large irregularly-shaped structure, was modified to hold 2.2 million US gallons (8,300 m3) of water. But when cinematographer Al Giddings visited the site he found the potential tank was still not quite large enough for the production's needs. Cameron then investigated the original containment vessel for the reactor chamber, a cylindrical structure 200 feet (61 m) across, 55 feet (17 m) deep. Following modifications, this vessel was converted into a vat able to hold 7.5 million US gallons (28,000 m3) of water. This containment vessel became "A" tank while the smaller turbine pit was the "B" tank.

"B" tank was used for all the interiors of the submarine, the Sub Bay set and for the "wet-for-wet" miniature work. The "A" tank was used for the main exterior of Deepcore and for the full-sized exterior Montana missile deck section. (The Deepcore structure is visible in the pre-2007 Historical Imagery views on Google Earth.) The water depth and length of time spent submerged meant that the cast and crew had to endure decompression treatments.

The Deepcore rig was anchored to a 90-ton concrete column at the bottom of the large tank. It consisted of six partial and complete modules that took over half a year to plan and build from scratch.

Interior sets for Deepcore as well as other production sets were built inside the nearby warehouses on the site.

As the production crew rushed to finish painting the main tank, millions of gallons of water poured in. It took five days to fill.

Can-Dive Services Ltd., a Canadian commercial diving company that specialized in “saturation” diving systems and underwater technology, specially manufactured the two working craft (Flatbed and Cab One) for the film. Two million dollars was spent on set construction.

Filming was also done at the largest underground lake in the world — a mine in Bonne Terre, Missouri, which was the background for several underwater shots.

The theatre version didn't have these parts in it, , ,

"World war three in a tin can" , , speaking of the downed subs payload.

The fact that ET could have created huge water waves and wiped out all coastal cities.

hmmm why didn't they want the public in general to see that, , hmmmmmmm
It was only on the extended play DVD movie.  ::)

I'm on BB and can only see some of the content.. Is this the same abyss with Clooney? Or a re-make? Or a different film?
