Zorgon, fascinating stuff mate and I had no idea ferrets were used by the Yorkshire regiment (or even Virgin media) -here's another weird ferret factoid from England (probably Yorkshire) although I'm glad they've stopped it.

Quote
Weird fact of the day: Ferret Legging

An ancient English “sport” called “ferret legging” has contributed to the myths about ferret behaviour. The contestant had to tie his trouser legs around the ankles, then place two ferrets down his trousers before tying the waist closed. The object was to be the person that keeps the ferrets in his trousers the longest. Many people only lasted a few minutes before the ferrets nipped them, causing them to release them in a panic. The poor creatures must have been terrified, and it is no wonder that contestants were often bitten. Fortunately, ferret-legging has waned in popularity as awareness of animal welfare has increased.

Cheers.

Okay just to be clear... can ferrets eat raisins?

Ferrets LOVE raisins.  Raisins are basically sugar and they are dried fruit (ferrets are obligate carnivores, meat eaters), two things against them already. But that's not even the worst of the news.

Dr Kawasaki has done research on ferrets and raisins and has found that over a period of time, if ferrets are given raisins regularly, they often develop kidney disease or kidney failure.

Since elderly ferrets don't need anything else going against them, I don't personally feel raisins are a good idea - my kids don't get them.  HOWEVER, IF you do decide to give raisins, I would strongly recommend cutting a raisin into 1/4ths and it makes FOUR treats out of one...the ferret doesn't know the difference (in fact, the cut raisins will be tastier than the whole raisin) and then not giving more than 2 raisins a week.

It's really important that we always keep in mind that ferrets are carnivores; they eat meat. Almost everything other than meat and meat products is not good for ferrets. Sugar, and/or a food that can cause an intestinal blockage (dried fruits frequently cause blockages because a ferrets digestive system is just too short to digest dried foods, so they pass thru the intestines in the same state they entered the body)

Hopefully that puts the raisin question to rest :-)  Ferrets do love them...there are several kibbled treats that have "raisin juice" in them as a flavoring. Again, we're talking another form of sugar here, but if your ferret LOVES raisins and you reaaaally need to feed raisins, consider feeding a raisin flavored kibble treat.

PS they WILL steal chocolate bars, potato chips and granola bars and stash them for later. So keep your munchies out of reach

Ferrets Sold As Toy Poodles: Argentina Pet Dealers Reportedly Selling Weasels On Steroids (PHOTO)
The Huffington Post  |  By Andy Campbell Posted: 04/08/2013 11:34 am EDT  |  Updated: 04/08/2013 4:52 pm EDT

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/08/ferrets-rodents-sold-as-toy-poodles-argentina_n_3037094.html

Apparently Argentinian bazaar salesmen are passing off ferrets on steroids as toy poodles -- and people believe them.

A local news report out of Buenos Aires caught the attention of the Daily Mail and other sites this week, after a man took the "toy poodles" he bought at the La Salada market to a veterinarian, only to find that it was actually a giant weasel.

Selling what Argentinians call a "Brazilian rat" -- a ferret given steroids at birth to increase its size and then groomed -- isn't a rare occurrence, the site reports. But this particular story, aired in June 2012, apparently confirmed the urban legend that these freaky ferrets are sold at the popular market.

The victim paid $150 per poodle, Yahoo! News reports. Another woman told the Buenos Aires station that she was tricked into buying what she thought was a chihuahua -- but that was also a ferret.

It's unclear where the enhanced ferrets are today.

And if you can't tell the difference between a ferret and a toy poodle, the Daily Mail has a checklist you can use to make sure your pooch isn't a gargantuan weasel on 'roids:

People who buy Toy poodles in the first place are not very high on the intel side of the gene pool :P

But even though these morons should be neutered, I am willing to bet that the fluffy weasel makes a better pet :D

My Daughter says that when Ferrets pass away... they become Dragons  :D

We just lost one this week... Rin (short for Ai' Cam'wethrin "Little Thief" in Elvin) She was old almost 6 years and had a tumor. We had her recovering last month but then she suddenly took a turn. Then last night we put her into her bed and one of the others laid on her to keep her warm, putting his paws around her... was something I have never seen. The next morning we found her in the sleeping bag hammock peacefully asleep
