How to find Mooralla Smoky Quartz Crystal Geodes. Mooralla is a locality in Victoria, Australia. The fossicking/prospecting areais open to the public. Crystals from this area are multi terminated and have a notable transparency and lustre and many contain fluid/water inclusions. JUST BEAUTIFUL! They should be called.....Black Diamonds.

I will be looking for a nice specimen or two for you mate ;)

The ebay listing's for Mooralla Smokey Quartz are quite interesting as can be seen here :

http://tinyurl.com/makqhcf

Heck I have not had a day off work for two week's due to weekend work.  I travel roughly 1.25 hour's to ride to and from work on a weekend for about 60 buck's.  This 60 buck's per day on a weekend tip's me into a higher tax bracket where I see close to zilch monetary reward for my effort.

Soon I will have a car which will allow open up a new world of possibilities in regards to travel on weekends!  After looking at the channel I posted in My OP it's quite fair to say that fortune favors the brave   :-X   ;D

Well :-\

I had a piece 30 years ago that I would like to have some more of. I am not sure exactly what it called. When I got it the guy called it black opal. I have looked on the net and not found what I am looking for.

It was very black with specks if opal in it and ended up with a very high polish.

I am open to just about anything.

I am trying to get in touch with a local lapidary club to cut this hunk of hawks eye ;D

I also just found a cool lapidary forum.

G'day there Back and Baron Zorgon :D

We had a great weekend away which consisted of driving for about four hours followed with setting up camp and a good chinwag with Dad and his Wife.

We found once we arrived at the fossicking site that it had recently been bulldozed for safety (which according to my Dad sucked), as it made finding old hole's very very hard.  Dad was going off old tree stumps in the ground to find a hole with a decent face they shared with an old timer a couple of years ago LOL

All in All we spent Two whole days digging a Three meter hole in really tough Clay to find our hole was a bit of a dud LMAO

We still got some crystals though along with quite a lot of druzy, but not as many as I would of hoped or of the quality I would of hoped for.

THESE ARE NOT PICS OF OUR DIG (but hopefully illustrate the clag you have to dig through to get to the Gems)

AS MENTIONED NOT MY PICS BUT THESE GEMS CAME OUT OF THE ABOVE DIG:

Sorry for the CAPS, but it seems safer to hammer the point home till I post some of my own pics after i clean up the handfull of samples we found in our rather dud dig ;)

I can see why people become Gem Hounds for Two Reasons,

- Its great spending good time with good people in remote locations.

- and there are ALWAYS better Gems to find NEXT TIME LOL

Hey there Baron... thanks ;)

I really don't know the monetary value of these crystal's as I more enjoy the experience of the hunt than the reward at this point in time.

From my searching on various flea bay site's these crystal's do demand a buck, but as to how they translate into sale's is beyond me.

I read a very good example from a Permaculture Video recently of how Value Adding works.. (ScreenShot Below)

I imagine Gem's work on the slow sell basis till either you find a motherload of something unique, or in this case regarding "a range of unique stone's" which will supply a steady income.  From what my dad was telling me about his "former" local gem club is that everyone has turned into Silversmith's and that when they found out he has load's of Mooralla Gem's they offered to buy them.  My Dad though is a man of the Dig.. and doe's not need the money YET.  And he is not that happy that some Gem Club's forgot how to DIG... the whole point of a GEM Club as far as he is concerned is the Expedition :D

Bob Jackson ?

Apparently this guy is a Gem Hound...

Wow I still have the dig of a rather crappy hole we dug back when I posted this thread LOL

Ok this week I shall get back to dragging these rock's out of the basket and see what we can do to raise funds for this site!  (This site has to have a permanent home to inspire people for a few more years yet)

Our current discussion won't inspire many, but the previous hard work will at some point in time!
