Time in Space May Alter Genes and Muscles Would Wither by Mars
« on: February 01, 2012, 03:04:33 am »
I found these two fascinating article's on wired, the first about time in Space altering astronauts Genes which i bet is to do with the magnetism in the experiment more than the latter .

The second study relates to space mavericks traveling to Mars for a year and returning barely able to crawl.

Time in Space May Alter Astronauts’ Genes
Quote
Spending long periods at low gravity may alter genes, suggests a new experiment involving a magnet-powered trick used on Earth to simulate weightlessness in space.

Subjected to magnetic levitation that generated an effect similar to microgravity experienced by astronauts orbiting Earth, fruit flies experienced changes in crucial genes.

Humans won’t necessarily respond like fruit flies, but the system is considered an useful model for probing the effects of permanent free-fall on biology. However, it’s also possible that the gene disruption was caused by magnetism, not low gravity.

“We have tried to separate the effects of microgravity and magnetism, but we’ve learned it’s not so easy,” said molecular biologist Raul Herranz of Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas in Spain, leader of the upcoming study in BMC Genomics. “We don’t know yet what is causing what — the magnetism or the microgravity?”

Astronaut Muscles Would Wither by Mars

Quote
Even if we could farm on Mars, astronauts might be too weak by the time they get there to help plow the fields.

The first cellular analysis of muscles from astronauts who have spent 180 days at the International Space Station shows that their muscles lost more than 40 percent of their capacity for physical work, despite in-flight exercise.

No matter how good their shape was before the astronauts left, they returned with muscle tone that resembled that of the average 80-year-old. In fact, the astronauts who were in the best shape before they launched were the most likely to come back with withered, or atrophied, muscles.

NASA currently estimates it would take a crew 10 months to reach Mars, with a one year stay, and 10 months to get back, for a total mission time of about three years. These studies suggest they would barely be able to crawl by the time they got back to Earth with the current exercise regime.

“The lack of load” — pressure on muscles — “is the main problem,” said biologist Robert Fitts of Marquette University. “There is no gravity and so any fibers within those muscles are unloaded. The load normally maintains protein synthesis and the size.” Even with plenty of activity, the lack of load leads to atrophy.

In an Aug. 17 Journal of Physiology study, Fitts’ team tested muscle fibers from calf biopsies of nine astronauts, taken before and after their space station stay. The researchers isolated single muscle strands and tested their ability to generate force and velocity.

On average, astronaut muscle lost 35 percent of its capacity to produce force, and 20 percent of its velocity. Both of these factors contributed to a 45 percent loss in power required for strong, quick motions.

Imagine a piece of paper. Draw a dot on one side of the paper, another dot on the other side of the paper.

The first dot represents Earth, the second, Mars or any other beyond... The paper itself space/time.

No matter how you look at it, those two dots are very far away by any conventional means.

Now take that paper and hold the first dot up to the second dot. Until we are able to warp space/time itself in such a manner, we are not going anywhere even remotely outside this solar system anytime soon.

Very good I thought

Re: Genes Changing....

When we go into space, we take our germs and microbes with us... this is unavoidable as they are inside us.

On the ISS mold grows in the shower area and evolves

This dust mite was found floating in a globule of water onboard Mir. Other microorganisms collected include protozoa and amoeba

Ciliated protozoa recovered from free condensate during NASA 7

Amoeba recovered from free condensate during NASA6

Worms in Space

In just a few generations these worms show genetic modification in space...

Re: Atrophied Muscles

LOL one of John's proofs that Apollo 11 was a hoax was that they showed no signs of rubber legs immediately on their return :P

But for a Mars trip the solution is simple... artificial gravity in a rotating drum

The concept was already understood back in the 1800's by two men... I will do a thread on that shortly LOL Work never ends :P

The Movie 2001: A Space Odyssey showed us...

A simple revolving drum on a long distance space craft would solve the gravity problem

Re: Folded Paper Warp Drive

That is the simple explanation of wormhole theory. What it means is that you do NOT need and speed at all to move, but you need immense power to fold space with a gravity generator to make point A and B meet.

Then you simple step forward and unfold space

Lots of papers at Los Alamos archives on that :D

i'm currently working on a game project, set in our solar system.  as a result, i'm wondering if anyone here can answer a question regarding time passage.

if you're on a space station poised between earth and the moon, how many hours are there in a solar day? how many days in a solar year? let's place the space station half way between earth and the moon, and it keeps pace so that it is always between the earth and moon, so even when the earth rotates one side away from the moon, the space station is still between the earth and the moon.
