6-8 inches of rain expected in Costal areas between New Jersey and RI. Power outages and Flooding set to be big issues with this system.
Meteorologists are warning of major power outages for 9 states in the Northeast.

Being that i am right in the path of this thing I have already begun to prepare for loss of power but the wind gusts of up to 100 MPH will indeed bring down trees and add to the already vulnerable flooding areas. Not much to say about this besides to prepare for the worst.

Any little shift between now and Tomorrow night could bring significant changes to FL as well as the effects in the North east Ill bring any significant changed as we watch out 18th NAMED storm predicted to really slam the Northeast the hardest it has been since Super Storm Sandy 5 years ago.

Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project's "Trinity" test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan's nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea's two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear).

Each nation gets a blip and a flashing dot on the map whenever they detonate a nuclear weapon, with a running tally kept on the top and bottom bars of the screen. Hashimoto, who began the project in 2003, says that he created it with the goal of showing"the fear and folly of nuclear weapons." It starts really slow — if you want to see real action, skip ahead to 1962 or so — but the buildup becomes overwhelming.

A Massive Heat Source Was Just Discovered Under Antarctica, Driving Ice Melt And Volcanism
 Forbes Forbes
Trevor Nace, Contributor

Recent discoveries have revealed just how volcanic Antarctica really is, despite being hidden underneath massive ice sheets. However, up until now, there remained significant debate as to what is causing the unusual amount of volcanic activity under an area covered in ice.

Recent research found the source of magma that is fueling the volcanoes underneath Antarctica. The source, a massive upwelling of mantle magma, also known as a hotspot. This is a similar mechanism that produced the Hawaiian Islands and fuels volcanic and geothermal activity in Yellowstone.

There were two key reasons this discovery was difficult to come by, despite significant research.

The first is the difficulty of measuring anything underneath kilometers of ice. Typically geoscientists gain a better understanding of the Earth’s inner workings by sending sound waves into the ground and measuring the time and angle at which they return to the surface. Using complex mathematical algorithms, geophysicists are able to reconstruct a three-dimensional picture of the subsurface. However, this was difficult to do when any acoustic signal has to travel through kilometers of chaotic ice, causing significant noise in the subsurface “picture” beneath Antarctica.

The second is the counterintuitive nature of having a massive heat source underneath an area that is covered with kilometers of ice. With an average ice sheet thickness of 2.16 km and a maximum thickness of around 4.7 km, it’s hard to believe there is a massive heat source similar to the one in Yellowstone sitting beneath the ice. How has the heat source not prevented ice build up?

To tackle these questions the research team used a numerical model to help constrain the heat required to produce the melting we currently measure in Antarctica. While direct measurements underneath Antarctica are difficult and few, there are numerous measurements of meltwater outflow. This allowed the research team to constrain their model.

© Provided by Forbes Media LLC
It is well known that there are rivers and lakes beneath Antarctica that drain meltwater to the ocean. Some lakes are as large as Lake Erie and can rapidly drain into the ocean, causing a sudden sinking of the overlying ice.

The numerical model, using constrained melt rates, were able to predict heat sources underneath Antarctica. The team found that the heat coming from beneath Antarctica is constrained to 150 milliwatts per square meter, with a higher heat rate causing too much melting as compared to what is measured. To compare that with other areas, the average heat flux from the Earth is 40-60 milliwatts per square meter and it reaches an average of 200 milliwatts beneath Yellowstone National Park.

Interestingly, the team found one location where the heat flow required jumped to 150-180 milliwatts underneath Antarctica. This area is the presumed source of the massive mantle upwelling and heat source. The Marie Byrd Land mantle plume appears to be the primary driver of volcanic activity in Antarctica. Geologists believe the mantle plume formed 50 to 110 million years ago when Antarctica was not covered in ice. Since then, the mantle plume has continually worked to heat up Antarctica, continually working to melt the overlying ice.

A Radioactive Cloud from Russia Swept Over Europe — and No One Knows Why
Time Time    Jamie Ducharme   14 hrs ago

A mysterious radioactive cloud that swept through much of Europe this fall has officials baffled.

The cloud was harmless and has dissipated, France’s Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety wrote in a statement Thursday, but between Sept. 27 and Oct. 13, the radioactive nuclide Ruthenium 106 was detected in “the majority of European countries.”

Experts aren’t totally sure where the substance came from, though testing suggests it was first released during the last week of September in Russia or Kazakhstan, likely somewhere between Russia’s Volga River and Ural Mountains.

“Russian authorities have said they are not aware of an accident on their territory,” IRSN Director Jean-Marc Peres told Reuters.

Based on atmospheric tests, the report says, it’s unlikely that the cloud was the result of a nuclear reactor accident. Instead, it likely stemmed from a nuclear fuel treatment or nuclear medicine treatment center.

Ruthenium 106 is produced when atoms divide in a nuclear reactor. It’s sometimes used in cancer treatment, specifically for melanoma of the eye, though it can be dangerous at high levels. The cloud drifting over Europe, however, never reached a concerning concentration, according to the IRSN report.

“The concentration levels of Ruthenium 106 in the air that have been recorded in Europe and especially in France are of no consequence for human health and for the environment,” it says.

Major water receding again: Ocean mysteriously disappears in Brazil and anomalous tides in Chile

"There is something really weird happening along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts these last weeks.
Water is receding along the Atlantic coast, while Pacific waters are expanding and flooding parts of Chile. And this exact same phenomenon occurred two days ago AGAIN.

Regarding your question, i didn't see anything unusual happening here in Brazil, the video you posted in your thread, is on a beach (Figueira beach on Camboriu bathing place) in Santa Catarina state, sided to my state by the way.

The person in the video says  the receding is happening because the effect of a high pressure mass on the ocean plus strong north-east winds.

They basically say:

Sum of factors

"This is the Ekman transport, which occurs every day here in the Southern Hemisphere and causes surface water to move to the left of the prevailing wind. The wind is northeast towards the sea, "he said.

According to Puchalski, despite this occurring daily, in recent days, the phenomenon still had a strong anticyclone near Argentina.

"This weather system has its winds blowing counterclockwise. As the intensity of this anticyclone was out of the norm, it helped to accentuate the Ekman transport, causing the sea retreat that was seen in many beaches ", he detailed.

In addition, according to Leandro, the last days full moon also contributed. "It intensified the low tide, even with the strong waters receding that was also intensified by this high pressure system," he said.

Scientists Predict That Earthquakes Will Double In Number Next Year
International Business Times International Business Times
Suraj Radhakrishnan

A team of scientists presented a research paper to the Geological Society of America, revealing some ground shaking information. The paper has warned that there could be a big increase in numbers of devastating earthquakes  around the world next year caused by the slowing down of the Earth's rotation.

The research was conducted and presented by Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado in Boulder and Rebecca Bendick of the University of Montana in Missoula at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. They found that variations in the speed of the Earth's rotation could set off intense seismic activity, particularly in the tropical-equatorial regions where the population density is very high.

Any change is the Earth’s rotation speed is minuscule. It is affected by a factor of milliseconds and the changes in the length of day and night cannot be perceived, only calculated. But these small changes set off a seismic rumble that can release vast amounts of underground energy.

"The correlation between the Earth's rotation and earthquake activity is strong and suggests there is going to be an increase in numbers of intense earthquakes next year," Bilham was quoted in a report by The Guardian.

"The rotation of the Earth does change slightly – by a millisecond a day sometimes – and that can be measured very accurately by atomic clocks," noted Bilham.

The two scientists studied all the major earthquakes that registered a magnitude of 7 and above since 1900 to have a wide data-set. They identified a very visible pattern when the data for the whole century was laid out. There seemed to be visible spikes in seismic activity marked by an increase in the number of a large earthquake. Five such spikes were identified and during this period 25 to 30 large earthquakes were experienced every year.

"In these periods, there were 25 to 30 intense earthquakes a year," he said. The other periods identified only averaged 15 quakes a year, Bilham was quoted in the report.

The team was able to draw parallels to other data that could potentially affect seismic activity and found that these five spikes happened during periods when the Earth's rotation decreased in speed slightly.

The slow rotation periods came within five-year stretches. The team found that when the Earth's rotation slowed down over the last century it was followed by periods of massive earthquakes. "The Earth is offering us a five-year heads-up on future earthquakes," said Bilham.

The scary reality is that we are at the end of one of the five-year slowdowns.

"we should see a significant increase in numbers of severe earthquakes. We have had it easy this year. So far we have only had about six severe earthquakes. We could easily have 20 a year starting in 2018."

This means that areas around the equator should be on high alert for a spike in seismic activity. Earthquakes can be devastating in densely populated areas. The team says that there is no way to pinpoint the location of an earthquake. It is also unclear why the speed of rotation causes more seismic activity.

Who came first, the earthquake or the slow down in rotation?  ;)

Could the slow down in rotation a response to less earthquakes and the Earth needs earthquakes as a kind of pacemaker?

Interesting, but not enough information.
