Missing Apollo 11 Moon Tapes

Now this one is an interesting story... Missing tape...  :o  Well John told me years ago that the Apollo signals did not go directly to the US, that they went to Australia first...

Well I was able to track that down and found that was indeed the case. The were sent to Honeysuckle Creek, Australia then were downgraded and sent to Goldstone in the Mojave Desert... then resent to Houston where NASA displayed them on their big screen at Mission Control... where the news media was then allowed to FILM them from the big screen. No original data reached our TV sets...  and you wondered why the looked so crappy?

 ::)

Well since then Honeysuckle Creek made a website telling the entire sordid story... and here we have one case where John's stories are now verifiable with fact. :D  I will cover that later... first lets look at the 'Missing Tapes'

How do you lose something as important as Man's First Landing on the Moon? Well it is worse than that, because at the time data was stored on very LARGE video recorder reels... how large?  Like this...

And it wasn't just one tape.... it was 700 BOXES of tapes and other material...  :o And this was reported on CNN, Washington Post and the likes, not some fringe website....

'One small step for man,' 700-box tape loss for NASA

Original recordings of Apollo moon missions are missing

Neil Armstrong left his footprints on the moon and his speech was among the 20th century's defining moments.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The U.S. government has misplaced the original recording of the first moon landing, including astronaut Neil Armstrong's famous "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," a NASA spokesman said on Monday.

Armstrong's famous space walk, seen by millions of viewers on July 20, 1969, is among transmissions that NASA has failed to turn up in a year of searching, spokesman Grey Hautaloma said.

"We haven't seen them for quite a while. We've been looking for over a year and they haven't turned up," Hautaloma said.

The tapes also contain data about the health of the astronauts and the condition of the spacecraft. In all, some 700 boxes of transmissions from the Apollo lunar missions are missing, he said.

"I wouldn't say we're worried -- we've got all the data. Everything on the tapes we have in one form or another," Hautaloma said.

NASA has retained copies of the television broadcasts and offers several clips on its Web site.

But those images are of lower quality than the originals stored on the missing magnetic tapes.

Because NASA's equipment was not compatible with TV technology of the day, the original transmissions had to be displayed on a monitor and re-shot by a TV camera for broadcast.

Hautaloma said it is possible the tapes will be unplayable even if they are found, because they have degraded significantly over the years -- a problem common to magnetic tape and other types of recordable media.

The material was held by the National Archives but returned to NASA sometime in the late 1970s, he said.

"We're looking for paperwork to see where they last were," he said.

NASA Is Stumped in Search For Videos of 1969 Moonwalk

As Neil Armstrong prepared to take his "one small step" onto the moon in July 1969, a specially hardened video camera tucked into the lander's door clicked on to capture that first human contact with the lunar surface. The ghostly images of the astronaut's boot touching the soil record what may be the most iconic moment in NASA history, and a major milestone for mankind.

Millions of television viewers around the world saw those fuzzy, moving images and were amazed, even mesmerized. What they didn't know was that the Apollo 11 camera had actually sent back video far crisper and more dramatic -- spectacular images that, remarkably, only a handful of people have ever seen.

NASA engineers who did view them knew what the public was missing, but the relatively poor picture quality of the broadcast images never became an issue because the landing was such a triumph. The original, high-quality lunar tapes were soon stored and forgotten.

Only in recent years was the agency reminded of what it once had -- clean and crisp first-man-on-the-moon video images that could be especially valuable now that NASA is planning a return trip.

About 36 years after the tapes went into storage, NASA was suddenly eager to have them. There was just one problem: The tapes were nowhere to be found.

What started as an informal search became an official hunt through archives, record centers and storage rooms throughout NASA facilities. Many months later, disappointed officials now report that the trail they followed has gone cold. Although the search continues, they acknowledge that the videos may be lost forever.

The Saga Of the Lost Space Tapes - Washington Post

This is what we saw on live TV

This is what they saw at Honeysuckle Creek

Ed von Renouard working at Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station in Australia was the first person to see images from the Apollo 11 moonwalk. Image courtesty of Bruce Ekert.

Quote
"When we sent our camera up on the mission, everything about it was a first and a big unknown," said Richard Nafzger, an engineer with NASA who was involved in the original transmission of the Apollo 11 images to Earth and is now part of the search to find them. "Would the camera work? Would we get TV of that first step? We just didn't know what to expect.

"In the same way, we're doing a kind of massive tape and document search that's never been done before," Nafzger said in a recent interview. "We might discover the tapes tomorrow, or we might reach a point where we have to say we can't go any further. Right now, I would have to tell you their fate is pretty much a mystery."

Stanley Lebar, who had been in charge of developing the lunar camera, is also involved in the search. He can recite all the understandable reasons why he and his colleagues did not give the tapes the attention they deserved back in 1969 -- they were cumbersome, a highly specialized format that appeared to have limited value in the pre-digital age -- but he nonetheless is kicking himself now for not getting a copy for safekeeping.

"We all understood the importance of this event to history, to posterity, and so we all should have made sure those tapes were safe and secure," said Lebar, 81. "I ask myself today, 'Why the heck didn't you think that way back then?' The answer is that I just assumed that NASA was going to do it. But, unfortunately, that was a bad assumption."

The tale of the missing Apollo 11 tapes is made all the more awkward because televised images of subsequent Apollo missions were greatly improved. It was only for Apollo 11 that an unusually configured video feed was used. It was transmitted from the moon to ground sites in Australia and the Mojave Desert in California, where technicians reformatted the video for broadcast and transmitted long-distance over analog lines to Houston. A lot of video quality was lost during that process, turning clear, bright images into gray blobs and oddly moving shapes -- what Lebar now calls a "bastardized" version of the actual footage.

The original video from the moon was in an unconventional "slow-scan" format, made necessary because almost all of the broadcast spectrum was needed to send flight data to Earth. The format scanned only 30 percent of the normal frames per second, and it was done at a much lower than normal radio frequency.

The images would probably have remained forgotten and of little consequence to Lebar, Nafzger and NASA but for the initiative of a retired California ground station engineer and several Australian technicians who meet regularly for reunions.

In 2002, one of the men who had worked at Australia's Honeysuckle Creek ground station in 1969 -- and who had seen the high-quality Apollo 11 video originals back then -- found a 14-inch reel of tape in his garage that seemed to be from that period. He brought it to a Honeysuckle Creek reunion and passed it around.

At the next year's reunion, several more Honeysuckle veterans brought in mementos from the Apollo era, and this time they included actual moonwalk photos they had taken as the video played on their special monitors. The photos were of the original images -- not the ones reformatted for television -- and they were clearly much better than what everyone else had seen. An American engineer had similar pictures taken at the Mojave site.

The Australians were eager to learn whether the tape was of the actual Apollo 11 moonwalk, but they had no way to play the ungainly reels. Convinced that the tapes could have historical and educational value, they tracked down Nafzger, 66 -- one of the few Apollo 11-era people still working at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, where most Apollo data had been processed.

The good luck continued when Nafzger found that the soon-to-be-mothballed Data Evaluation Lab at Goddard still had one of the few seven-foot-tall analog machines that could play the Apollo video. The Australians sent him the tapes and he put them into the recorder with great anticipation. But what came out was just chatter and computer data from an earlier Apollo mission.

:@@:

"All truth passes through three stages. First it is ridiculed. Second it is violently opposed. Third it is accepted as being self-evident". - Arthur Schopenhauer

Quote
It was disappointing, but the seed had been planted: Not only was NASA reminded of the original moonwalk tapes, but the agency had a machine that could play them. It also had two men -- Nafzger and Lebar -- who still lived relatively close to Goddard and were willing to spend hours of their own time looking for the three hours of video.

They spent weeks searching in the vast National Records Center in Suitland, where the tapes once were housed. They came up empty until finding documentation that some 26,000 boxes of Apollo tapes were requested by Goddard officials between the early 1970s and the early 1980s. Considering that the 45 videotapes from Apollo 11 would have been stored in just nine of those boxes, the odds against finding them were clearly daunting. Nonetheless, Nafzger and Lebar were optimistic.

Back at Goddard, however, they found no trace of the missing tapes, nor of anyone who knew much about them. Clearly someone at Goddard had forwarded the Apollo tapes to other storage, dispersed them to other NASA centers or had them destroyed, but Nafzger and Lebar have had little luck identifying who that might be. The fact that all this happened about 30 years ago made the task more difficult, since some of the most likely decision makers are deceased.

The missing tapes are now something of an embarrassment to NASA, which last August put Goddard's deputy director, Dolly Perkins, in charge of the search. She is overseeing the hunt for the tapes and, perhaps more important right now, for memos and directives that might yield clues to their fate.

"As far as we know, all the tapes were handled properly from a mission perspective," she said. "Typically, when we record at a ground site, we don't preserve data tapes. The scientific investigators will get what they need and then erase. But here there is some indication that we didn't destroy the tapes but stored them for some period of time."

But as Perkins well understands, there is a difference between the "mission perspective" and the historical and social value of these particular tapes. The missing videos could help excite a new generation about exploring space, and they offer significant commercial possibilities as well.

"Maybe somebody didn't have the wisdom to realize that the original tapes might be valuable sometime in the future," she said. "Certainly, we can look back now and wonder why we didn't have better foresight about this."

Apollo 11 - Honeysuckle Creek and Sydney Video in the News -- July 1969

Workings
The original film of the Apollo 11 moon landing is recorded on reels of specially formatted magnetic tape like this one. There is only one working machine at the Goddard Space Flight Center that can still read the magnetic tape.

Quote
Have You Seen? NASA
These images were distributed to NASA employees in 2006 to help them identify any boxes of Apollo-era tapes they might come across. Goddard believes the missing tapes may still be somewhere at Goddard or sent off to other facilities for storage or research.

Quote
Tape It
Over 2,600 boxes of magnetic tapes full of Apollo data like this one were shipped from the National Archives to the Goddard Space Center between 1970 and 1975. Only two boxes of tapes remain at the Archives. The rest are missing

Quote
Knowledge is Power
The tapes include biomedical data on astronauts, telemetry and engineering data from the Apollo missions, as well as video footage of the Apollo 11 landing. As NASA begins thinking about future missions to the moon, these 13,000 reels of missing tape would be a critical source of information.

So a couple of points here... first the SHEER VOLUME of missing data, and second, VITAL data like gravity readings and other engineering data. Well its vital to us  ;D

Years ago John told us that despite them planning all sorts of return missions and making a Lunar Colony, that they would find some excuse NOT to go back...

Well now that President Obama has cut their funding and specifically told them they can NOT go back to the moon, nor Mars for at least 25 years (but they are allowed to visit and land on asteroids) they don't need to come up with an excuse.  So there ya have it... maybe we were booted off the Moon and told never to return... because we won't be doing that in mine and John's  lifetime now anyway.

A Brief History of the Apollo Hoax - Popular Science
Despite reams of evidence to the contrary, many still insist those footprints above are a myth

That is a funny statement  ;D They just finished telling us that all the tapes and data was lost  :o

One Giant Screwup for Mankind

NASA put a man on the moon - then lost the videotape. A grizzled crew of ex-rocket jockeys are on a star-crossed mission to find it. By David Kushner

Quote
WHEN THE EAGLE LUNAR MODULE TOUCHED DOWN ON JULY 20, 1969, all eyes were on astronaut Neil Armstrong. But Stan Lebar's ass was on the line.

A young electrical engineer at Westinghouse, Lebar had been tasked with developing a camera that could capture the most memorable moment of the 20th century – the Apollo 11 moon landing. The goal of the mission wasn't merely to get a man on the moon. It was to send back a live television feed so that everyone could see it – particularly the Soviets, who had initiated the space race in 1957 by launching Sputnik. If the feed failed, Lebar, the designated spokesperson for the video setup, would turn the camera on himself at Mission Control in Houston and apologize to more than half a billion TV viewers. "It was my responsibility," he says. "I'd have to stand up and take the hit."

There is just one problem: NASA has lost the tapes.

Speaking of Wired News and Giant Screwups...

Space Junkyard - NASA Forgot How to go to the Moon

This is a video report and you need to watch it at Wired News. Near the end they ask Buzz Aldrin if it could have flown and he says "Yeah it could have been TESTED"

So now NASA is reverse engineering Apollo rockets to see how they did it the first time... Seems like the tapes, NO ONE thought it was important to keep notes. NASA is either totally incompetent or this is one big lie that has many holes.

BBC Apollo 11 Missing Tapes
Sir Patrick Moore

Yes that's right! Not only did NASA lose the tapes, but so did the BBC

Quote
Moore has undertaken significant research in astronomy. It was revealed in a TV programme that when the Russians wanted accurate information on the Moon over a number of years, they first went to America then other countries for the information but could not turn it up. Then someone suggested Patrick Moore and on going to his house and asking him, they were invited in. Moore left them and returned with a pile of exercise books with all the necessary information in, his records of observations over many years which is how in 1959, the Soviet Union used his charts of the moon to correlate their first pictures of the far side with his mapped features on the near side and he was involved in the lunar mapping used by the NASA Apollo space missions. In 1965, he was appointed Director of the newly-constructed Armagh Planetarium, a post he held until 1968. During the Apollo programme, he was one of the presenters of BBC television's coverage of the moon landing missions. The tapes of these broadcasts no longer exist: conflicting stories have circulated as to what precisely happened to them, or whether the broadcasts were recorded at all.

SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

So not only are they gone, they can't even tell us what happened to them...

Patrick Moore also questioned the Apollo 11 crew on their return...

The following bit of information came from Sam Colby. I have emailed him to see if I can get the details of this story and have not yet had time to follow up on it. But I wanted to add it here with the other missing data information because if this is true, it explains everything... and yet raises a whole lot of new questions.

I am hoping to get some help tracking this one down...

Apollo files stored under guard at Langley Research Center.
Classified by L B Johnson,

Quote
here are the Apollo files stored under guard at Langley Research Center. Classified by L B Johnson, and not due for declassification until 2026, when NASA will finally admit they faked the Apollo Moon missions. However by then it will not come as such a shock, as the majority media already know the truth behind NASA's fake Moon missions.

I am in no doubt whatsoever that there will still be PAN's in 2026 who will insist the Apollo Moon missions were real, even after NASA's admittance.

Source: Sam Colby - Apollo Reality

Now so far all the other images that have been supplied via Sam I have been able to verify at original sources, so I have no doubt that this story is real, and most likely only released recently... so lets get on it... because if LBJ did classify these after Kennedy was assassinated, I have a lot of questions.

That's all for now... need some sleep. I have more to add tomorrow and then I will unlock the thread for comments

The Apollo 204 command module is seen in storage at Langley Research Center in Virginia. The command module, damaged in the 1967 Apollo fire, its heat shield, booster protective cover and 81 cartons of related hardware and investigative data occupy 3,300 cubic feet of warehouse storage space. Astronauts Virgil I. Grissom, Roger B. Chaffee and Edward H. White II perished in the Apollo 204 spacecraft fire on Jan. 27, 1967 on Launch Complex 34 at Cape Canaveral. The hardware has been stored at Langley since 1967.

PLEASE NOTE UPDATE: In early May of 1990, NASA announced plans to move the hardware and related data to permanent storage with the Challenger debris in an abandoned missile silo at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS), Florida. However, at month's end, NASA announced it had decided to keep the capsule at Langley for an indefinite period of time.

So IF it was done in a studio, what would we need?

Well we would need movie sets, both indoor and outdoors sets...

Remember that James Bond film "Diamonds are Forever"  where James steals a moon buggy and goes tearing through a Moon set? You really think they made a whole moon set for such a short clip? :P

And somewhere in all of this there is a scene where Bond interrupts what appears to be the faking and filming of a moon exploration before eventually nicking off with a Moon Buggy for a chase around the desert outside the moon themed hanger. Source

Is there a subtext here for those lunar landing sceptics or is it just a bit of fun? Source

Uh huh... yeah...  ::)

Well we already saw the big gantry at Langley that could have been used for moving the LEM and we saw the huge moon props at Langley that were meticulously detailed using Lunar Orbiter images.

Now lets go find some out door sets with some craters...  Hmmmm not so many craters on Earth...

What to do? Call in the USGS with some dynamite

Apollo Training Photos
Cinder Lake
Sunset Crater, northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona

Quote
Cinder Lake

Cinder Lake lies just south of Sunset Crater, northeast of Flagstaff Arizona. Access to it can be had from several directions, but the best seems to be forest road 776 which is marked as the "Cinder Hills ORV area" on a sign along highway 89 just south of the turnoff into the Sunset Crater National Park.

In the 1960s, the Astrogeology branch of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Flagstaff created an artificial crater field at Cinder Lake in order to train astronauts as well as test equipment and techniques for lunar exploration. They used a Lunar Orbiter image to re-create an actual lunar landscape by setting off charges of the right size to make craters of the right size, as well as setting them off in the proper sequence to get the overlaying ejecta layed out in the same order as seen in the lunar image.

Jim Irwin and Dave Scott of Apollo 15 in the 1-G Grover LRV trainer.

Cinder Lake history page

Quote
Starting in 1963, the Astrogeology Research Program played an important role in training astronauts destined to explore the lunar surface and in supporting the testing of equipment for both manned and unmanned missions.

As part of the astronauts' training, USGS and NASA geoscientists gave lectures and field trips during the 1960's and early 1970's to teach astronauts the basics of terrestrial and lunar geology. Field trips included excursions into the Grand Canyon to demonstrate the development of geologic structure over time; Lowell Observatory (Flagstaff) and Kitt Peak National Observatory (Tucson); Meteor Crater east of Flagstaff ; and Sunset Crater cinder cone and nearby lava flows in the Flagstaff area. This training was essential to giving astronauts the skills and understanding to make observations about what they would see on the lunar surface and to collect samples for later study back on Earth.

The volcanic fields around Flagstaff have proven particularly useful in testing equipment and training astronauts. Cameras planned for use in the Surveyor project were tested on the Bonito Flow in Sunset Crater National Park because the lava flow appeared to be similar to flows on the lunar surface. A field of artificial impact craters were created in the Cinder Lakes volcanic field near Flagstaff to create a surface similar to the proposed first manned American landing site on the Moon.

Editors Note: The following details about USGS Plaster of Paris models I have yet to verify

Apollo Reality - Sam Colby

Quote
The picture above [top] was taken at KSC, however those boulders appear to have a very similar layout to the boulders shown in the [above] picture, which NASA claims is a photo taken on the Moon. How could NASA create a boulder strewn landscape BEFORE they had visited the Moon, and therefore had any indication of what the landscape was like? The sculptured mountains shown in right hand picture are plaster Paris models made by USGS for use by NASA in creating fake Moon pictures.

Quote
The picture above [top] was taken at Houston. It shows how NASA created a fake Moon crater. That same crater however appeared in quite a number of Moon photo's from different missions. In Apollo 16 picture of Charlie Duke by crater, this is the crater. The rough edges, gaps and pockets between boulders were smoothed out with ash/charcoal. Overall this fake crater appeared in rough format for the Apollo 14 and 15 fake pictures, and smooth format for the Apollo 16 and 17 fake pictures. Picture [above] is how the crater appeared in one of NASA's fake Moon pictures.

Quote
The first photograph above is, believe it or not, a plaster of Paris model of Hadley Rille. The USGS made this plaster of Paris model BEFORE Apollo 15 supposedly landed on the Moon. How come? Well apparently previous Apollo missions supposedly did laser topography when circling the Moon, (funny that none of those astronauts from the previous missions made any mention of taking topography readings). The USGS then made a  plaster of Paris model of Hadley Rille based on those topography readings, or so we are told.

Quote
The picture shown on right, is a photograph of Hadley Rille supposedly taken by the Apollo 15 crew. USGS then said they were amazed that the model made by them, before astronauts went anywhere near Hadley Rille, was so like the real thing. We the public are not amazed, as we can see the plaster paris model was the one used for the Apollo 15 photo.

Apollo Training Photos
Building 9 at the Manned Spacecraft Center

Here is a photo of a training exercise... If you notice in the black sky you see anomalies... the same kind that Apollo surface shots are full of...

So lets turn on the lights...

Lunar Set Building 9 Courtesy NASA/JPL

Now if you look at image # AS14-66-9295

You will see this...

That is either a UFO  or its one of the studio lights that they didn't edit out :D There are many more such 'artifacts' in the Apollo images...

This one in #AS16-111-18035HR

My biggest issue with Apollo Surface images has always been with the Hills in the back ground... they look to smooth and featureless. Yet when we look at the Lunar Orbiter images we see sharp features and pointy shadows, sharp crags and gullies.

Yet in Apollo they are all smooth and void of any detail, even slightly blurry. And the edge where they meet the ground looks like its been added after. Also looking at where they touch the black sky... if you zoom in... it really looks like a sloppy job of painting in the black (or cutting out)  Just zoom in and follow the edges. I will add samples later

Here are a couple LO images showing the sharp pointed shadows...

[more coming]

Even the Apollo images from orbit agree with that

But Sam Colby has a different few point on the shadows...

Quote
This is another interesting photograph supposedly taken by astronauts orbiting the Moon. See anything wrong with it? Well in case you hadn't noticed take a look at the length of the shadows cast by the Moon mountains/peaks. The length of those shadows is colossal, many, many miles long. Such a scenario is of course ridiculous. The reason the shadows are so long is because the light source is but a few feet away from the plaster of Paris model of the Moon.

Either way... the hills don't look and feel right

Meanwhile back at Building 9...
A New Look at the Moon Landing

The three images above are NOT on the Moon... they are taken in Building 9. Just shows how easy it is :D  How do I know?

In 2005 they made a movie for the IMAX 3D film "Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D"

So let's compare the details of how they made that film with the Moon Landing. Remember that set in building 9? Well its still there after all these years  :o  Notice the green screens?

The Green Screen... No hills added yet. This is why the Apollo Hills look like they were added in later :P

Director Mark Cowen instructs astronaut actors on the set

Puppet on a String Notice the black sky 'anomaly' just above the Astronot... just like most Apollo photos :D

Apollo Cut and Paste

Many skeptics tell us the anomalies in Apollo images can all be explained... well how about THIS one?

I call this photograph "One legged astronot who walks backwards". If you look closely you will see why. There are no footprints behind him, but plenty in front of him. This leads me to believe he has walked backwards. Further examination reveals he has lost his right leg completely, as one can see the fake lunar soil where his right leg should be. When composing fake pictures using "cut and paste" the above blunders are common if not checked correctly.

Sam Colby - Apollo Reality

Not sure about the walked backwards as he could have come around the back, but there is no denying that his leg is missing. Now what kind of a camera glitch would make his leg vanish yet show the dirt behind?

Full Description
Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard stands by the Modular Equipment Transporter (MET). The MET, which the astronauts nicknamed the "rickshaw," was a cart for carrying around tools, cameras and sample cases on the lunar surface. Shepard can be identified by the vertical stripe on his helmet. After Apollo 13, the commander's spacesuit had red stripes on the helmet, arms, and one leg, to help identify them in photographs.
