Title: Help for technical issues on your PC
Post by: A51Watcher on May 28, 2012, 03:46:35 pm

I thought this a good place for helping members in need of advice to solve technical issues on their PC.

For instance, Amaterasu for one can not watch the youtube videos we often place in our posts for fear the Flash plugin will start, which causes her PC to freeze up.

Anybody have an easy suggestion for getting around this?

The 2 solutions to this that I am aware of are -

A) Go to one of the various websites that allows you to download youtube videos by entering in the URL of the video you want, and then you can watch them from your own hard drive. (These sites make also invoke flash though, not sure.)

You can locate the URL of a video in a post by clicking QUOTE on that post, and you will see the video code displayed.

B) We find and use an FTP site to share videos, again being able to watch them from your hard drive.

I am confident we have enough savvy members here to overcome any obstacle a member may be having.

Yes, the Flash virus kicks in any time I'm at a site that uses a Flash element.  I had to back off going to 12160 because of this and it's aggravating.  If I want to edit My blog there, I know I have to endure slowness, and then reboot afterwards.

And every page of YT that kicks the vid in actively starts the whole annoying process.  I had a free scanner software that found the virus but would not clean it off unless I "upgraded" (for a price).  It would clean the low-risk cookie things, but when I told it to clean the Flash thing, POOF! There was the "Upgrade Now?" thing.

[sigh]

Am - p.s. if the version of SUPER you get whines that your old clunker won't run well on it, I still have an earlier version that runs just fine on old clunkers!  ;D

Thanks for reminding Me!  Been so busy with other things.  Going to get it now.

EDIT to add:  Hmmm.  I go here:  http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html  and click the DL button and it takes Me to:  http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Converter.aspx?type=GoogleImageAds&gclid=CPWSrKaRpLACFUFo4AodxjhRZA

Is this the right page?

Amaterasu, Just try another browser, it'd be useful to track trouble.

I have - I'm on Chrome, but have tried Firefox and IE (eewww).  Same problem.  Doesn't slow down just the browser - everything slows down.

Well...  It's unclear.  That may have been an ad.  Below that are like 100 links to lots of stuff - and now I'm totally confused.

Yeah I see that, it IS a bit confusing.

I wandered around and found their download link here :

It's the big one at the top of the page that says DOWNLOAD

Yeah.  That's the one that took Me to  http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Converter.aspx?type=GoogleImageAds&gclid=CPWSrKaRpLACFUFo4AodxjhRZA

Way down at the bottom of the  http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html  page - and I mean right at the bottom - is the actual DL.  There's two options, but I clicked the right button and seem to be getting the eright program.

Nothing like totally confusing pages, I tell You what!

it's a teeny little blue link in the lower left that starts the download -

Any site that uses a Flash element.  I had another site I would go to but when I got the virus, I discovered that My computer would begin to choke when I visited - and not stop the behavior until I rebooted.  Whether I closed the tab or not.  If I visit YT, it does it.  If I watch from here it does it.  Any Flash element.

If You sent Me something, Thor, I didn't get it.  You had Me DL avinstall.exe - PC Tools Installer for AntiVirus Free.  That is the one that finds something called "Flash" that is a medium risk, but won't let Me remove it without an upgrade.

you know the name of virus???

Says, "Flash" on the AV scanner I got (see answer to Thor).

Hey!
I use linux mint for my OS. I highly recommend you give it a try. Do you have a spare 2 Gigabyte USB drive? If so then check this out:
www.pendrivelinux.com

You can download and install linux to a USB disk, then boot to that USB operating system. It only borrows your machines hardware and works like a champ and is relatively virus free and includes many built in programs from office to photoshop like tools. This is especially helpful to those that wish to keep their computers on their keychain. Literally.

If you are running windows and having troubles I recommend you download update and run malwarebytes (Malwarebytes.org)
Cheers!

For instance, Amaterasu for one can not watch the youtube videos we often place in our posts for fear the Flash plugin will start, which causes her PC to freeze up.

I believe Amaterasu is using Chrome so not sure on the fix for that one BUT

Firefox being in a battle with the other browsers has been updating almost weekly.  I started having lock up issues on my computer which has 3gigs qaud processing and 3 gigs memory...

I traced the issue to Firefox plugin container that was using 100% of memory when ever it loaded the Adobe flash plug ins

There were also other Java issues that I listed in another thread already

I solved the problem by reloading Firefox 6.02  The last version that worked flawlessly and everything worked since (it just uses the old plugins that were already there)

I also tuned off auto updates in FF and Adobe and have had NO problems since. I am sure there are similar options in the other browsers. I would monitor the task manager to see what program is using that memory that causes the lock up. You can also check windows error logs to see which program cause the lockup

Video Download Helper
http://www.downloadhelper.net/

This has a plugin for Firefox and Chrome and can be stand alone.  You get a little Icon to the left of the youtube title. Simply click on it and it will download the video to a default directory at a very fast speed, NOT dependant on your internet speed alone

For playback VLC Viewer can be set to default view ALL formats including flash

VLC media player Official Site (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)

Both these programs are FREE and work flaelessly for me

Quote
B) We find and use an FTP site to share videos, again being able to watch them from your hard drive.

We can do that here, but we need to figure out the copyright issues first

We suspect that your PC is suffering from lack of horsepower, not a virus.

horse Power can be important BUT a browser and flash plugins should NOT be using 100% of your memory  EVER.

You can use task manager and watch the 'processes' tab and it will show you which program is using that memory. If it is Flash related it will be a plugin container function

JAVA also is a problem with the newer versions. KEYLOGGERS hide in your JAVA internet history and JAVA temp files are NOT automatically cleaned by most cleaners.  I cleared mine manually and turned off "Save temp files" in the JAVA consol

Keyloggers will attach themselves to your logins to sites and make you think the site you are visiting is sending you malware, ads or viruses but in reality it is piggybacking on your browser and recording your logins

HiJack This (not to be used by amateurs is one I recommend you ALL download.  Then you run a scan and post the results  DO NOT push any other buttons on it until you know what to do :P

But a HiJack This log will tell you (and any tech... there are several free HiJack This help forums out there) what is running on your computer and what you should turn off

Windows processes like taskeng and explorer are obvious but what if you don't recognize one like C:\Windows\system32\wbem\unsecapp.exe

So  take the file name...

unsecapp.exe

and past into google search...  you will find many listings for any file by computer geeks :D

The first one that pops up...

What is unsecapp.exe doing on my computer?
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/unsecapp/25780/

Quote
unsecapp.exe is a process found on Microsoft Windows server and workstation suites which offers support towards compatibility issues.

Please see the website below for more information: http://msdn.Microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wmisdk/wmi/iwbemunsecuredapartment_createsinkstub.asp

This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

So there you go  DON'T TOUCH IT :P

Sometimes viruses use same name as a legit process. In that case the geeks will tell you that the phoney one will be in a different location, not the legit location

I will have to add these posts to my Computer Health Thread that you all have read by now :P

You need to be VERY picky about ANY virus scanner that has that "F" word attached to it...there is a reason it is free and it is not usually to work in your favor. Many Free utilities masquerade as something they are not or will seem to be doing what it is supposed to to the untrained eye. Get familiar with your processes and try using MSCONFIG (run from the start menu run box) to help ID what process is linked to what program and you can also switch them on or off in there for diagnostics. I have had a lot of success with this free online scanner:

We suspect that your PC is suffering from lack of horsepower, not a virus.

1GB of RAM is sufficient to RUN windows XP but not efficiently by any means, this computer would be struggling, sluggish and likely be experiencing a very fragmented hard drive due to the fact it would be relying heavily on virtual memory to make up for the lack of RAM. A fragmented drive can cause a tremendous amount of grief and should have been checked prior to going through the pain of virus scans etc. as this would:

a) Add to TSR programs already running in the background adding to your memory usage which = less useable RAM

b) Virus scanner won't find or fix software issues or performance issues.

Yup.  And I installed it and ran it.  It found some low risk cookie things and a "Flash" thing.  I could get rid of the cookie things but it would not do the Flash thing.  When I clicked to remove, the cookie things would be reported as removed and that was it.  So I ran it again a couple of days later and it showed the cookie things again and the Flash thing again.  I clicked on the flash item and one option was to remove.  I selected remove, and that's when a window popped up asking Me to upgrade.

horse Power can be important BUT a browser and flash plugins should NOT be using 100% of your memory  EVER.

Here is a sample log I just ran on my PC right now

Windows processes like taskeng and explorer are obvious but what if you don't recognize one like C:\Windows\system32\wbem\unsecapp.exe

So  take the file name...

unsecapp.exe

and past into google search...  you will find many listings for any file by computer geeks :D

The first one that pops up...

What is unsecapp.exe doing on my computer?
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/unsecapp/25780/

So there you go  DON'T TOUCH IT :P

Sometimes viruses use same name as a legit process. In that case the geeks will tell you that the phoney one will be in a different location, not the legit location

I will have to add these posts to my Computer Health Thread that you all have read by now :P

My friend has a copy of EMSIsoft w/HiJack Free...  That is what He used - updating it first.

I will try the other stuff Thor suggested.  And, yes.  My CPU is OFTEN running at 100% or no less than 90% - but only after I access anything Flash.

I have had a lot of success with this free online scanner:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)

We have optimized/defragged the HD, as one step in trying to fix the problems.

Oh, another weird behavior on My machine...  Other open windows pop up in front of My browser randomly, but only briefly, leaving a "ghost" - the screen has the outline and scroll bar left, which goes away if I scroll it off screen and then back.  Very annoying.

Am,

Thats not a good sign. You need to clean your machine.
Most likely you have a trojan at work, maybe complete
with keylogger and rootkits.

Try the Norton Power Eraser, it worked for me.
Its great.

Previously...I tried a handful of other things,
none of them worked.

Plugin issues then  hogging the CPU

Hmmmm.  I haven't put any plugins on the system Myself in a very long while - at least none I know of.  I ran Comodo and it wanted to get rid of two files:  Photoshop.exe and a minor one that was recently installed from My friend's disk and is trusted - it is one He has had for nearly a decade.  It was added AFTER I started having the issues, so...  [shrug]  Haven't even put plugins into Photoshop for a couple of years, and the issues I am having started long after those added filter plugins were put in place.  Weird.

Since I need Photoshop, I did not remove it and since I trust the other program, and since I trust the other I did not remove it either.

I have heard that there was/(still is?) an issue with virii being attached to Flash elements.  That is what I suspect I got.  PC Tools found exactly what I suspected before I ran it, but will not remove it without money...  So...  So far the only program that finds a Flash issue won't get rid of it for Me.

The best way to get vids off YouTube, if you have Flash issues, is to use a browser plugin that adds a "Download Video" button directly under the video player and disbale Flash. That's what I do in Firefox when I want to download for later viewing I just don't disable Flash because I have zero issues with it.

Some things I think need mentioning though:

Someone said 1 gig of ram isn't enough for XP? It's more than enough. Vista or Windows 7, they require 1 gig minimum. Now if you do a lot of photo/video editing, I'm talking pics that can be hundreds of megs in size or even a gig. Then yeah, 1 gig of ram with XP is too low. For video watching and any other basic usage, perfectly fine.

Don't waste money buying any ram for a system that's running XP. You could go buy Windows 7 or even a small netbook for just a little bit more. Hell or give one of the many distros of Linux a try.

2.) The only thing getting rid of that Flash connected virus or whatever it is would be a complete system restore. Not the built in Windows restore stuff. The full blown system format. Usually there's a restore disc or hard drive partition included on the PC to do it. No anti-virus out there is perfect.

That's my 2 cents worth
Title: Re: Help for technical issues on your PC
Post by: Amaterasu on June 06, 2012, 01:07:03 am
Thanks for that.  [smile]  I can't reformat because I would lose all My software and I am jobless, homeless and penniless and can't replace it.  A good deal was given to Me when somebody bought new stuff, and when I went homeless, I lost the disks.

Not sure if that's what You're talking about...  At this point, I have done a few things that seem to have fixed most of My issues.  Still having some vid issues, but they have lessened.

My dear Amaterasu, we have already been through all this. If you fail to listen to what I have told you, you WILL drop that PC to it's knees and be without one completely. Although all these people have good intentions to help you I have done the homework on your PC to determine what your issues were and I have identified hardware issues that you have failed to acknowledge. Therefore all this additional help is rendering your machine to have less and less rescources when you already have inadequate rescources run sufficiently. Overheating video and only 512MB of RAM can and will cause some ghosting on your screen. All the scanners, spyware managers etc. aren't going to do squat for your underpowered rig. At this point the damage is likely pretty severe from all the installing and uninstalling of all these programs which still have not fixed your PC. That should tell you something. Best of luck to you.

Yes, Ellirium, and I thank You for that.  It's just that I had a Flash virus that the one program found but would not delete unless I upgraded, and I had 8 rootkits, and I tried to fix the rootkit thing, and it blew Windows out of the water.  So Now I am on a Linux shell that won't let Me do anything - including go to yahoo mail - says the certificate has been pulled and will not go to the mail page.

Well.  I will see what I can do with the help of My friend.  Hopefully We can restore Windows.

I'll have to look into this Flash virus...Admittedly we were supposed to look at that and I dropped the ball there and forgot to do that. Does windows load at all or are you strictly using this linux shell now?

Try hitting F8 while the computer boots and see if you can get into SAFE MODE.

Actually she had less than 400MB of RAM lleft for rescources. Her total installed RAM is 1GB with shared video using some.

When she tried to run a flash video in chrome it was relying strictly on virtual memory as she literally had no physical memory left.

I am not abandoning her at all... I have gone through great lengths to help her keep her machine running. I have not had sucess in restorations and usually had to reformat most drives in instances like this. Hopefully there is someone here that has had more luck than me in this.

Thank You both.  My friend is A+ certified, but has limited resources.  And yes, I have 1 gig of ram.  (Well, .99...)

It was My fault for not asking Him when I deleted the files I did.  He probably would NOT have deleted them.  But He was sleeping and I thought the software knew best...  From now on, I'm not doing anything on My own with this machine.

Cosmic, I would love to get a new machine with the software I need on it.  But unless it's free, I do not have the money.  I have applied to over 50,000 jobs in the last 6+ years since I was laid off, have lost My family, my possessions (except for the computer, some bedding and some clothes), My home.  No One is hiring an arthritic old lady (who cannot do any job requiring standing more than 1/2 hour at a time) when They have 50 other applicants all 20- or 30- or 40-something.  I am LITERALLY penniless.  And I mean that specifically and...LITERALLY.

Not a problem, Cosmic.  I have received an offer to fix everything and upgrade RAM, but I have to send My computer across country.  And I don't have the wherewithal to do that.

Somehow this will all be sorted out.

It is a great shame there is no-one in your local community/friends that can help you....having to send your computer overland seems like a bit of mission, i guess i'm a bit spoiled living in a city with all kinds of support.

If you don't mind me asking...where are you ?  This being a Global site, i have no idea where you are.

I'm presently out on Long Island, NY.  But I know My friend here and have met a few people through Him - one has helped with food since My food stamps ran out.  (But I am still nearly out of food - living on the last of My rice now...)  But none of Them are computer People, and My friend is living on a fixed income...  And well.  It's tough.

I have a prospect for a place to move to - but the specifics of the date are still in the air.  And there, I will have work and community.  Until then, I will make do.  [smile]

HI Ellirium,

Have you been able to remote in to look around or just send her instructions to follow?

Amaterasu,
Just sent you PM.

No, we looked at system information reports I sent her screen by screen instructions to improve memory performance and clear out some stuff sucking her system rescources down. She has installed and ran a few different programs to remove and clean spyware etc. and the problems persist. I am convinced this is a memory issue more so than a problem stemming from this flash player virus. She also had been running the video on non-native resolution which was causing some heat issues with the video card and resulting in red lines etc. on her screen. Regardless if she manages to cure the virus or not there is still this issue of not enough physical memory to run flash within chrome.

On June 3rd I received a message that youtube video was able to play, this is why I am NOT convinced this is the virus doing this.

So what else got installed that killed the rest of the physical memory? would be my question.

May I weigh in on this discussion?

Although not an expert by any means, I've been following the developement of malware for a number of years now, and if you think you can ever have a guaranteed clean computer, using up to date sotware, then you are sadly naive. I am fantastically lucky in that I can fairly easily repair my computers, so my heartfelt advice to ameratsu is easy to give, but maybe hard for her or anyone else to implement but, one day you'll buy a new or second hand computer so here goes:

1. ALWAYS, ALWAYS get the "restore discs", it will save you a vast amount of messing about later, and increased the resale value and ease of sale no end...

2. Even if like me, you are a "mess", learn enough about saving, and "folders" to be able to move your stuff onto an external hard drive or USB stick. Losing a few programs is a pain in the butt, losing stuff you personally created or found on a now defunct website, really, really, sucks. When my laptop got nicke I only lost one valuable set of photos of my family, becuse I occasionally rember to make a backup.. The hard disc (in my day, the 1990's and aerly 2000's) was always the most prone to failure (and irrepairable by ANYONE that you are likely to have access to) part of the computer. MAKE BACKUPS.

3. IF you get malware, and even manage to remove it, it may have dropped a non-detectable software payload, that rarely activates, so wipe, or better yet upgrade, then restore your computers hard drive at your aerliest convenience.

4. Even if you have no money, you can find a good "free" (you get nag screens, which need to be closed from time to time) antivirus/protection package on teh web, if you are going to use one, RIGHT AFTER THE RESTORE and before the "updates" run is the good time to install it.

5. it takes 2 hours to do a fresh build of windows, if you know what you are doing and have organised yoruself, much less if you have the restore discs. and a few minutes to then restore your backup folders.

6. if you are going to be "hardcore" about your internet security, (I.E. you are hacking area 51, or simply are very, very, paranoid) you need to do the following daily.... :c)
That is: open new computer, surf, make backups, erase hard drive and restore to factory fresh. Use a different name, for yourself, the admin account, the local network, and the computer each time. and the ultimate protector is of course , to always actually connect via someone elses access point. having a shedload of different network cards in order to regularly change your mac address, is probably helpful, but may be a step to far for most people.

7, On a more SENSIBLE note, IF Ameratsu had acquired her used laptop from me, and was asking for help with her infestation, knowing how she's actually a bit useful in the grand scheme of things, I'd be asking her if she had any backups, before rebuilding her machine. I worked for a while in the leadng antivirus company of it's time, (English, don'tcha know?) abd gained just enough coding knowledge, to tell you that prevention is better than cure, and that the real cure is ALWAYS a software reboot for a long standing infestation. It's simple, if someone has infected your PC with software that allows them to make covert changes to it's loading, by the time the antivirus software gets updated enough to catch and deal with it, it's mroe than liekly that newer changes will have happened to your PC, that the software cannot deal with.
They call them viruses, because they "mutate" 2 hours maximum for a back up and restore, can be a much more attractive opition tahn days of messing about with trying to fix your compromised operating system, with or without professional help.

Now I.T. People being what they are, (and there are a fair few here I am sure) it may be that someone has a different idea of how these things should be dealt with. This post certainly isn't perfect, (I wrote it!) but I don't want to confuse the newbs any more than is absolutely neccesary. So I'll say if you can do it better please do, and allow me to remove my post, so that yours can stand instead as the best effort at making a definitive way of dealing with this virus crap for those who may not have access to a professional IT person.

Here is some better advice.  If you don't absolutely have to use windows then this is what you should do.

Buy the PC.  Download a version of Linux.  For a start it is free.  There are lots to choose from.  If you aren't technically minded go for Linux Mint or Ubuntu first as they are even easier to set up than Windows. to set up. http://distrowatch.com/

If you run Linux, almost all malware will not run on your computer.  you can use it for Office Applications, Internet browsing, image manipulation or music.  There are free Linux versions of pretty much anything you might want to use.  It is also much more stable than windows and you can run versions that are not resource hungry so your PC will work faster.

Give up on Microsoft products if you want a virus free life. ;)

I run a Linux/Mint distro from a USB drive just for websurfing and office work...No problems...I have a link for a one click freeware software program (rufus), that lets you set up an operating system to boot from your USB drive....Just pull the drive from the port and your PC will boot to your normal operating system. Not sure if I am allowed to post the link here...Just google it...

B@st@rds!!

Your replies are both better than mine, but (for me pose the dillema of do I remove my post, or not, becuse it's still relevant to most current users).

AND

You've made me HAVE to work a bit and go try linux "mint". I have a very credible mate who swears by it for all the reasons you mentioned, Pimander. I really like Andy's idea of the bootable USB stick, becuse that incorporates elements of backing up automatically.

That's the last time I try to be helpful, it's just ended up giving me more to do. :c)

Seriously, good replies, and the point about Linux being less prone to malware is absolutely true. Linus being open source is less prone to secrets and misinformation as to how it works, which should make "home maintenance" easier too.

Great reply and advice, friend Fruitbat.

Thank you for the time, consideration and thoughtfulness.

AmaterasuSolar computer UPDATE

Once we got Amy moved here to TEAM RABUN country, we brought her communications device to the shop and resolved all of her (computer) problems, including a complete wipe and all new software install and stuffed it full of RAM and gave her a new monitor. We also used our new program, Chamisa. We think she is still missing Photoshop.    :'(

Chamisa-An Innovation in Computer Repair (http://www.chamisa.co/)

A Computer that is sick with Spyware, Viruses, Trojans, Worms and Rootkits can be expensive and frustrating to fix. A visit to the computer repair shop can cost hundreds of dollars and leave you computer-less for days.

Trying to find a solution online can be confusing to say the least.

Don’t you wish someone would come up with a program that can run at home, that’s inexpensive, foolproof and so easy to use you don’t have to ask your kids (or ferrets) for help?

Check this out and tell them Thor sent you for the FREE Beta Test Invite.

Chamisa would like to extend an offer to all active military and their immediate families.

For all you do, you will be able to run Chamisa on your computer free of charge.

It's just our way of saying Thank You and giving back to all those that give so much for our country.

I am missing a lot of software....  I am hoping for the whole Adobe Suite - as that covers the programs i lost and has one or two others.

I do have GIMP for Windows presently, and miss Photoshop - mainly because I know where all the functions are.

But I have some native Photoshop files I cannot open, and that is the biggest reason I need Photoshop.

Thank You, Team Rabun, for Your wonderful welcome here!

Just to let people know; keepvid.com requires Java, for some odd reason.

Another alternative is this Python script - http://rg3.github.com/youtube-dl/

It requires Python, but that is not as much of a potential problem as Java, and it is also useful as well; Amy in particular will probably be able to find a number of other scripts for it which will do things she likes, if she looks around a bit.

You can get Python itself here (http://www.activestate.com/activepython).  Most people recommend ActiveState's package, as apparently the one from python.org is a bit of a mess.

Amy, PM me and we can arrange for you to send me whatever files you need opened and I can then send them to you as PNG or whatever you like.

I use both PS and Gimp (on Armap's recommendation) and have to say I have come to prefer Gimp over PS or anything else.

I agree and admit to still running back to my old paintshop pro once in a while when I need something done in a hurry because I am familiar with all the buttons and functions.

As I continue to explore Gimp I am always pleased with it's results and many options. I also think it's interpolation methods produce better results than PS or anything else.

Recently for my processing I had to compare all interpolation methods from all programs on the same single frame before I could proceed with the project any further.

Gimp won out in my book, yes even to my hallowed Photoshop!  :o

The results were more smooth and evenly distributed across the image.

So don't give up on learning Gimp! Spare time fooling around with it's functions is a good investment in my book.

And now batch manipulation?  8)

Recently I downloaded a plug- in for it that is a batch manipulation add- on.

It allows you to choose any operation that Gimp performs, set the parameters, and then choose hundreds or thousands of photos, then sit back and watch them be processed as fast as your processor will allow.  8)

This is invaluable to me having to process the thousands of frames of Area 51 footage taken by myself and others.

My previous videos of the footage were made by hand processing each single image one at a time, we're talking several thousand frames.

Brutal it was.

Imagine my pleasure and glee as I now just sit back and watch Gimp go -

ka chunk
ka chunk
ka chunk
ka chunk
ka chunk...

 ;D   ;D

GO GIMP!!

The GIMP's native operating system is Linux, which is (loosely) a member of the UNIX family tree.  UNIX was originally designed as an operating system that was specialised for automated or non-interactive use.  This is why graphical user interfaces for Linux, even today, still are not quite as strong as Windows, but on the other hand, both UNIX itself, and software originally developed for UNIX systems, is far superior to Windows for non-interactive automation; performing large numbers of unattended tasks at a time.

I believe that every computer user who is willing, could potentially benefit enormously from having both Linux and Windows installed on their computer.

Windows is better most of the usual things which people automatically think of, when using a computer; namely, watching movies, playing games, setting up photo albums etc.  If you want to do something complicated, but you only need to do it once, and you want the computer to guide you through every step of the way, Windows is a good system to use.

Linux (or FreeBSD, which is another free UNIX system) on the other hand, is a lot better than Windows for carrying out large numbers of simpler tasks, which you can set up in such a way that you can leave the computer on and go to bed, and the job will be done in the morning.

If you liked The GIMP, A51, I'd recommend having a look at Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu), which is a Linux distribution that is very easy to use; you can just insert the disk in the drive as you can with Windows, and if you give it a bit of information, it will set itself up.  You can also install it in such a way that you can have both Linux and Windows on the same system, as mentioned.

Linux has a lot of other software, however, which can allow you to use your computer to do things automatically, as you did with The GIMP.  Personally, I wouldn't stay with Ubuntu after you become more advanced, (I'd probably recommend moving on to Debian after you've learned a bit) but Ubuntu is Linux's gateway drug; it's the easiest Linux distro for a new user out there.

Damn right.  I lost about 6 months of research into 1947 air accident data.  There was data for USA, UK and lots of newspaper material.

However ArMaP, there is a very good reason internet servers mostly run on Linux machines (stability).  The leaner versions of Linux do run faster than Windows too.  If you use KDE as the desktop though the performance is roughly the same as Windows.  Microsoft suck for other reasons connected with trying to monopolise parts of the software market for years.  Finally, I can't justify using Windows if Linux is even just its equal, on the basis that Linux is free and open source.

I don't agree with this.  Windows used to be better but there is no longer any difference except you won't get a virus doing these things on Linux.

I also think you should check out some of the latest Linux desktops.  Some are pretty much identical in how they function to Windows.  In fact the version of Gnome before the current one was possibly better as is KDE (but KDE is resource hungry like Windows).

Mint which is based on Ubuntu might be slightly easier as it comes with Flash and other tid bits already loaded.  But yeah, Debian is really stable and secure.  I use the XFCE desktop which is very efficient, uses little resources and looks and behaves like the Mac operating system (OSX is it?).

I don't agree with this.  Windows used to be better but there is no longer any difference except you won't get a virus doing these things on Linux.

I will admit that I haven't been a regular Linux user for probably four years, Pimander; so yes, things possibly have moved on to a degree.  As far as FOSS UNIX is concerned, I'm much more a BSD man; although given a problem with my current drive geometry, the only way I'd be able to install FreeBSD at the moment, would be to completely reformat my system, which I can't do because I would still want to dual boot, (mainly for gaming) and I don't actually have a physical copy of Windows.

Being a BSD user, also means that I'm a lot more at home with a command line interface; in fact, I would say that to a degree, because of some viseospatial problems, neurologically I actually struggle with Windows' GUI in my own way, to almost the same extent that most Windows users would be completely lost at a console.  I can use Windows, but it definitely is not my native or preferred environment.  I have Cygwin, which allows me to be a little more comfortable, but not much.

The reason why I bring that up, though, is because the fact that I'm comfortable with the opposite type of interface to most users, means that it can be difficult for me to make accurate recommendations about what the most user friendly GUI would be, even though I'm aware that a graphical interface is what most people need.

can anyone tell me what CLASSPNP is? my laptop stops loading drivers at this point.
now i have a laptop that is just a doorstop! lost all my data 2  years worth.
had to format the hard drive and delete everything so now i need all new drivers
and another copy of windows 7. why is there no drivers on my disk that came with laptop?

from what i have found it stops the mouse buttons from working (well mine does not work)
and there is plenty of talk on the net about this classpnp crap. im gutted,so much work to get it going again.

funny how it crashed on 1/1/13 just my luck. any advice?

CLASSPNP > Plug and Play Class which loads all your drivers.

Windows update has been known to screw up often.
Best you can do is try to roll-back to a System Restore Point before the Update or try a System Recovery from your Windows install DVD.

If you can't rollback to a System Restore Point then you can probably rollback the bad patch.:

1. Boot to command prompt ( you need to do this offline ).

(Either from F8 key, or by booting win 7 dvd /repair cd.)

2. Find your win7 partition letter:

at cmd prompt, type:

diskpart

list vol

3. Type the following:
( After finding your win 7 partition letter - use that instead of z below )

cd /d z:\windows\system32

DISM /image:z:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

4. Type: exit (to leave diskpart )

5. Reboot the Laptop

Thanks for all the help,But i deleted everything as i could not use the mouse to do anything.
I tried an external mouse but after doing restore's and re-installs the laptop still crashed so
I did perhaps the un-wise thing in formatting the hard drive and deleting not only windows
But also the SAMSUNG drivers that the laptop needs to work.

I Think i will have to get a disk made with all the drivers on it and re-install them.
Hopefully this will give me back the laptop in as new condition.

I'm also going to look at the date i got it as i think it is only out of warranty by a few days
As its only one year old not two as i said before and i'm pretty sure there are 3 more extra month's
left to go on the warranty as well as the 12 month one.I HOPE. If so it will go back.

This is the harsh reminder to back up my DATA! Maybe i will get an external hard drive to back up in future.

Thanks again for the help even if it was to late as i had erased everything.

Windows 7 ArMaP, i did not change anything i just shut the laptop down on the 31/12/2012
and when i turned it on on 1/1/2013 it would not let me use the mouse.
I did learn there had been 2 updates installed on the 1/1/13 (auto setting) so this may be to blame.
I run zone alarm and avast as my anti virus software and it has never let me down.
after trying all the restore options, i made the massive error of just erasing EVERYTHING thinking
that the Samsung drivers would be on the disk that came with the laptop. The disk only had windows 7 on it.

I know what to do now,(i need the drivers on a disk)
Should i consider running windows 8?

Try looking at the manufacturer's site, they usually have the drivers.

I don't know, I haven't tried it yet, I don't like the "start screen" that replaces the "start menu" (a silly idea, there was nothing wrong with the start menu), but from what I read (I just finished reading a book about Windows 8) it has some new features that could have helped in a situation like this. It also loads the anti-virus before any other non-system software, so it's more likely to catch virus than previous versions.

A co-worker of mine has been using Windows 8 since August without any problems, and one thing he noticed is that the battery life is a little better than it was with Windows 8.

and i expected this disk to contain the drivers like the last few i have used but no.

I have found a site with the drivers but there are so many i would sooner go to my local
PC repair shop and get them to write me a disk then just boot from that.
I can afford a couple of quid and i have had maybe 20 hours at trying to fix it!and i am done with it.
lesson learned.

I have recently installed a M570 Logitech gaming mouse (Wireless) too my system, I have been using it for sometime and then on January 10TH 2013, my system went crazy.
I have contacted Logitech, Have written to MS Support and even tried restore points, nothing seems too work, I can not cut & paste with right click mouse button, My Control panel doesn't display option for mouse for setting advance button issues and my internet Thumbnail Icon isn't the same as it was before.
I have been trying to rectify this issue for over a week and am having no luck.
"Any ideas about what has happened with my PC?"
Very frustrating and I am getting pretty fed up with this issue.
If there is anything I can do that I haven't thought of, would be great, one more thing, I have no option for backing up PC so can't reboot with service Pkg's, really a mind bender for me as too what comes next.

Part of the problem I think is with their set point software. I had a Logitech G5 mouse that started acting up. I removed the mouse and replaced it with one of a different brand. I had left the software on the computer and found the problem was starting to happen with the other mouse. I then removed the setpoint software and the problem went away. The G5 mouse however still had the issue when I tried it too see how well it worked without the drivers. I was getting the impression from the way it would sometimes lock up the computer, that if I didn't get it rectified soon some serious damage might have resulted.

That is suspicious, what icon does it show now?

Yes ArMap, the time this had happened was with the Set Point installation. I cannot locate it on my hard drive anywhere, and cannot remove it without locating it, even restore process didn't work, really frustrating for sure.
As for the mouse settings, it has no application for setting right click processes settings, just offers the right click to be a click and stay for copy and paste scenario, but still doesn't give me regular fold down options such as Cut, Paste, Check Spell or any other options. Not like it was before.
As for the Internet Control Panel Icon, that is a Globe now with a square displaying a gray 3 green check marks and doesn't no longer give me the 'e' associated with internet Explorer as it did before. It is also not in the list, it is off too the right of the list by itself, was with in the list previously, now there is a blank space where it once was.
I have contacted Dell with the issues, and they have not contacted me as of yet, but can't understand why I can't format and reboot my PC from new state, have the disks, but won't allow this procedure to be done, advises me to clear 'C' applications and then do format, never has done this before either, I have lost the owners operation manual for my PC, so am reading from info on line to help me find out  what has happened, after days of doing this research for the problem, I finally gave up and contacted Dell with the issues. Just doesn't seem as if they are on top of the game for my scenario or something.
Any ideas of how I can locate target for the downloaded program for SetPoint? I have tried several different search operations, doesn't pull up anything associated with downloaded software from Logitech.
Thanks for your assistance ArMAp, I really don't have anywhere else to get help from and having you here too assist makes me hopeful that it is something I can get through on my own without having to bring my PC in to the shop. Don't have the finances too do that right now anyways, so, your help is greatly appreciated. ;)

This is sounding like it could be an IRQ sharing conflict that might have resulted from a new driver or software having been installed. I have seen instances of this and resulting in garbled display as the videocard may be sharing this IRQ #. The only way this might be resolved is by going into the BIOS and checking the IRQ settings to see if any can be modified for the mouse.

Could be an IRQ conflict.

Locating files like this can be a problem, but you should find them either in 'C/Windows/Temp' or sometimes in IE 'temporary files' or 'downloaded prog files' which is also where you will find cookies etc.
Have you tried the Device Manager in the Control Panel?

Seems something has been wiped which it needs in order to do a full 'uninstall'. If you could find this & put it back where it was you can just uninstall & re-install it.

As a rule when connecting stuff to my PC i first see if Windows finds it & can run it, before using 'install' software that's provided, and only then IF it askes for the files (normally it wants the 'inf.*' file that is the 'install' command on the CD)

Hope this helps, i'm by no means a computer expert :(

I believe this is something that has changed in the setpoint software as it seems to affect logitech hardware, particularly mice. Some mice DO use an IRQ # and some do not require one. This is also dependant on how many other pieces of hardware may be connected that also may require an IRQ to share such as a printer or USB hub.

This should be in the control panel under the list of installed software. (add/remove programs).

Keyboard short-cuts: <ctrl> C = copy, <ctrl> X = cut, <crtl> V = paste.

The issue you are expirencing would seem to be little more than a "crashed" driver. Reinstall it from the original distribution disk you received with the mouse.

IF you are not finding any referance to the device driver, then it is likely that it is corrupt in the system registry. This is next to impossible to fix without the right software; go and find a decent "registry cleaner".

This does not "look" like an IRQ (interrupt request) issue, unless there is another device that is not working.

And, for what it is worth: ALL periphial devices use the IRQ structure in the machine, this is the ONLY way they can communicate with your system. Polling of devices on today's machines would  likely render the system completely useless.

Please note: I too am not a computer expert, just a retired software engineer. (well I tell everybody I'm not an expert anyway)

As mentioned above:
Ctrl + C = Copy
Ctrl + X = Cut
Ctrl + V = Paste

As for the right-click, use the context menu key.

This does not "look" like an IRQ (interrupt request) issue, unless there is another device that is not working.

In the situation of shared IRQ priority will be given to the device that REQUIRES the IRQ. If the new device requires the same IRQ and it is not available it does not necessarily mean BOTH pieces of hardware are going to lock up. The one that has already been assigned the IRQ may continue to function while the one requesting the IRQ may not have all of it's function or it may have none at all. This may depend on the reliability of your BIOS and how it handles IRQ distribution.

USB mice (in the past) used to rely on an IRQ because they were a port over from the legacy systems where EVERYTHING ran on an IRQ. today that is no longer the case with plug & play. Some USB devices require NO IRQ at all and a lot of BIOS settings now will allow you to manually select if you want legacy USB support to which an IRQ will be assigned.

God luck.

I never wanted to be one by choice....I got sick of getting ripped off by computer places that would charge exorbitant fees for minimal work that I could do myself. The extensive amount of pain I went through dealing with these legacy hardware lockups forced me to learn it to resolve my own issues. There is however a couple of things that may also cause similar problems but I am not thinking we need to get into that yet.  :P Incidentally I DID end up taking courses on all this stuff and starting a home based business.

From a local mountain friend:

Let me warn you about a new virus that has been encountered, which 99% of the folks will not be able to handle.

I encountered it Friday, while looking at some USGS topo maps. Suddenly a screen broke in with the head logo…

FBI…you have been doing all these things that are against “copy write” laws and you are subject to investigation and arrest.

It went on from there and then toward the bottom it offered to unlock my computer by sending an address $200, either check, money order or PayPal.

It so thoroughly locked up my computer that I could not get in to it even by reloading my OS.

I spent six hours yesterday working with a friend who has some special programs that enabled him to first scan the hard drive, after we loaded it into the removable drive on one of his computers, then he used another program to try and recover the operating system, back to a restore point from last week.

He is still working on it today, and may or may not be able to recover it. If he can’t, I’ve lost my existing emails, my pictures, my Word files and a whole bunch of other things.

Suffice to say, if this thing gets downloaded, automatically since that is the way most people have their computer set, there are going to be a few million people tearing out their hair.

You might want to warn everyone you want to be warned, but what ever you do, as I understand it, this is thing may be using Adobe as a blind. Another computer guru is the person who told me it might be attached to a false Adobe update.

As soon as I can figure it out, I’ll let you know…in the meantime I’m not letting Adobe do any updating.   :P

Kathryn -??After receiving the e-mail through Town Crier about the very dangerous virus that is locking up computers and may somehow be attached somehow with Adobe, I forwarded it to our son & our nephew who are both highly qualified computer professionals.

Below are their replies and advice to me.  ??

Son's reply:??
Yes, this is a real virus, and no I don't think it has anything really to do with Adobe software. There are lots of variants, but all of them can be removed. I think it is pretty rare.

All the information is here at this link:??http://botcrawl.com/how-to-remove-the-fbi-moneypak-ransomware-virus-fake-fbi-malware-removal/ ??

It has has links to the anti-virus and anti-malware software that can remove it (as well as manual removal instructions), although Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot S&D, and just about all current anti-virus and anti-malware software should detect it too. Anyway, just send this link to anyone who says that they might have that virus. ??

Nephew's reply:
If you ever get a prompt asking for a credit card or paypal payment, shut off the pc.

Yes, that is a real virus. If you pay, they will debit you the $200.00 (or whatever the amount), but will NOT unlock the pc. Instead, they usually "brick" the machine (make it unusable).

(My note:  I expect  my nephew who lives nearby would have suggested the same link (or a similar one as my son did) but he simply said I should call him if it happened to me and he would come disinfect our computers and recover lost data.

Chamisa repairs what is compromised when a virus bypasses the installed antivirus software. This is a repair-only, single use product that removes itself from the user's computer upon completion. A repair log is generated and stored on the user's computer.

Chamisa takes 5 or more hours to repair a user's computer.

Why? Because that's how long it takes to truly fix a computer, not 15 minutes like our competitors’ “Bandaid™ for a broken arm” approach.   :P

If that's anything like the ones I saw in several computers last year, it's not really a virus and is easily removed by hand, like the link you posted shows.

I wish there was a way to hold such website based software companies accountable for such dilemmas, it is perfectly clear, that if this type of situation would have arose with in description , I would have avoided the upgrade entirely.
My system is a dell XP professional, had a friend help me get the system going that was a tech , accidentally installed XP home edition instead, have all the Professional Service packs for Professional now, maybe should reformat anyways to get other professional options that I don't have any more. Not sure what to do, will try these other options first, and as for the Tech that it required to fix the problem, cumulatively, you guy's are all geniuses compared to my knowledge, "Group Hugs!!" :P  LOL
Won't give up, but will have to think about upgrades more intensely from now on. My M570 Logitech mouse only came with USB wireless connector, no discs too install anything, received an emailoffering me the update from logitech, thought it would be beneficial, guessed wrong.

One thing I do find very strange is that  when I am in my PM area for messages, it doesn't even allow me too delete messsages, even using function buttons provided by Peggy message area. I am very perturbed about this for sure, but am going through a lot of medical and family issues as well, so don't have all day long to get the problem solved, definitely don't have the funds too pay someone for too do it for me either, so, will be patient, and take notes as I take every step!! :P LOL

Since you have XP the same as on this laptop, i can help you with the menu's to do a bit of troubleshooting ;)

If you select Start-->settings-->control panel-->administrative tools, and open the 'computer management' window, you will see under 'system tools' a number of headings.

one of them is the 'event viewer' which is basically a log of everything the PC has done since it was booted up, going back several months. This is a good place to start looking, datewise ;)
It will give notice of 'services' (programs) and 'devices' (hardware).

You also have the 'device manager' for sorting out conflicts, hardware failiures, updates etc.

Now if you go to the bottom of the list (in the main Comp Management window) you will see 'services and applications'.

Open this, and open the 'services' window.
This shows you which backround progs are running, whether they are auto, manual, or disabled.

Some external software, like a driver update, can start, stop, & even disable services, including the 'alerter' service itself (!)

When you click on a particular line, it will give you info like who the software is from, wether it's auto or manual, on or off, disabled etc, further it will tell you what you can expect if this service is stopped.

They look quite innocent, but these 'services' can affect every part of the computer, & can give the biggest problems. It is quite possible that the update has disabled or stopped, a vital service that the PC needs to run the mouse etc.
You can try activating these services, or switch them to 'auto' so the system can activate or deactivate them as required.
In addition to all this, i have set my Explorer etc to 'ask before downloading anything' and i regularly trash all my cookies, this means i have to log-in again on all my favorite sites, but that's a small price to pay ;)

As for the messages on Peggy, if you 'select' (tick the box on the right), THEN it should give you the option of deleting it.
There is also a 'prune messages' pull-down button in the 'actions' button on the message page.
Not that i've used it yet, but i will have to soon, theres almost 500 in there LOL!

Ensure you go to the Dell website and download all the custom drivers specific to your motherboard or all the service packs on earth won't prevent you from having issues. This may end up clearing up the mouse issue as now windows is trying to run custom hardware with generic drivers. After you install the mother board driver suite ensure you go to every OEM website for every additional device you have and look for updated drivers for those as well. This may include your monitor, keyboard, etc. Only when you can verify all the correct drivers are installed can troubleshooting continue other wise you are beating a dead horse as far as guessing the issue.

Hello again everyone.

Well, I have been on Family Medical Leave of Absence from work, I am battling the Insurance Company for the Short Term Disability they owe me. This has left me basically homeless and without any funds coming in, I have appealed my case and have to await their timeline for resubmission, and this could be a while before it is resolved, so, I must "FIX" this PC myself, which I have no idea what has happened.

I went into the registry for program files, and there is a NTSF file that keeps coming up. It is also categorized as a 'Power Shell' I have no Net work sharing that I personally initiated for this too have happened. I have tried to run C:/FORMAT, but this does not allow the PC to accept the Command, I have tried from Boot Menu to Reboot using CD-ROM Restore disc and it doesn't recognize the device.

I am up too my wits in frustration here, but I have no choice now but to get this issue fixed myself due to my financial woes. IS there anybody here that can tell me how to get this resolved with these issues I have mentioned by myself?

Issues:
I have no 'Right' click fold down for mouse menu options. Can't Copy & Paste, and have no Favorites available any longer on my IE tool Bar directory for quick access. Favorites 'Star' is there, but it is collapsed and can not access it for the favorites saved. Setting's aren't even available with in properties of mouse settings.

My IE is no longer showing as "e" it is a Globe with some kind of strange lines going through it. when I right click for settings, or try to open it from Control panel, it just flashes and then opens nothing. I have tried from INI files too see if accessable there, but no go, I cannot find the original Internet Explorer Icon, not even in history of programs area.

I can't format my C: drive to be reinstalled too factory.

I have registries that I "DID NOT" install for Power Shell Program. This is listed as NTSF Program File, and can't figure out how too remove the program from file and storage area, or how to get this off the system too see if this is causing the conflict's I am experiencing.

I can't use 'Reboot' to allocate or rectify the problem or get the devices I have to recognize the factory CD-ROM. When I run System HDD, it lists a plethora of things and doesn't let me log on to PC once I choose this protocol for fixing the problem.

I can not get 'DOS' prompt to reinstall factory diskette (D:/) back too it's original factory setting's.

I can not save or copy file for backed up research I have on PC for the PRC Inventors groups on either A:, D: or E: USB storage as well.

I have tried to go to the Dell Website and DL the proper stuff as you all have suggested, I get the page set, Click 'Install/Update' and nothing happens. This is also happening at the MS website, it allows some software to download, but it doesn't fix the true issues at hand that need to be rectified.

I am so frustrated with this issue, and the Insurance issues is just icing on the cake as far as I am concerned, but it has too be something that I can fix, just don't know how or what chain of action too take to get this done.

"Any Ideas Fellow PRC Member's?"

With Great Respect,

Can you even reboot and hit F8 on reboot to get a boot menu?
Then you can start Windows in Safe mode?

Without an origional windows CD restoring this will be difficult to say the least. It sounds like windows is corrupted and likely badly fragmented. IF you can get into the diagnostic screens you may try running disk defragmenter which might reassign files to their proper locations and restore some functionality. Then run scandisk and reboot. This may only fix some of the issues I'm afraid. You might also be able to do this through SAFEMODE by pressing F8 while windows is just about to start it's boot sequence. It will load the basics and might give you more functionality in there to do what you need to do. The last resort option is to find another copy of windows XP PRO or higher and either install it using a dual-boot option or wipe the drive and do a fresh install. Whatever it is I would recommend a low level format and flush it out completely. To do this you will need a windows CD and re-write the file allocation tables to the drives. (If you have no windows CD available there is always torrent sites as absolute last ditch effort).

This power shell would be for windows power saving features like turning off hard drives after 30 minutes etc. not likely for networking. Also C:/FORMAT is not the correct DOS command to wipe the drive. Your close though. it should look like this: [ C:/FORMAT C: ]

Can you execute "msconfig.exe"?

If you can, then you can tell Windows that the next boot should be a "safe mode" boot. You also have many options in msconfig to help you try to solve the problem.

Got to be very careful in there. you could easily accidentally turn off something that will no longer allow it to boot period. Only modify the startup files or you may run into trouble in there.

That's why I am starting just with the safe mode option. :)

I also know that it's easy to deactivate something that is needed, I did that once with the mouse driver and once with the keyboard driver, using Autoruns. ;D

Man! 1WorldWatcher! That is a list of faults!
Can you even reboot and hit F8 on reboot to get a boot menu?
Then you can start Windows in Safe mode?

Sounds like some major virus has screwed your install  :(

Yes, F8 function is there, but won't allow me to pull up MSDOS command prompt, goes into HDD CHK DSK scanning, nothing really alows me too do anything at all. Very frustraing, can't even Format C: for factory reset.

Although I don't recommend pirated software sometimes it is easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission in that if this is not for a home business they likely will offer to sell you a legit copy at a reduced price. This is actually during the boot sequence. From cold boot right after the BIOS screen is done loading and it is switching from the BIOS screen to where windows begins to load you must be quick and just keep hitting F8 before the start screen comes up to access another menu where you can enter safe mode. If you miss it windows will boot and you must redo the procedure until you get it up. There is only a window of a few seconds.

It is a free operating system that basically does what Windows does, but is much more stable.  It is a version of Linux that is designed so that people used to Windows will be comfortable with it as it behaves and looks like Windows.  It runs normally without much input from the user (old Linux versions rarely did).

It is no use to you though unless you can burn a CD or USB Pen Drive or something,.

The purpose of Linux Mint is to produce a modern, elegant and comfortable operating system which is both powerful and easy to use.

Started in 2006, Linux Mint is now the 4th most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Canonical's Ubuntu.

Some of the reasons for the success of Linux Mint are:

It works out of the box, with full multimedia support and is extremely easy to use.
It's both free of cost and open source.
It's community-driven. Users are encouraged to send feedback to the project so that their ideas can be used to improve Linux Mint.
Based on Debian and Ubuntu, it provides about 30,000 packages and one of the best software managers.
It's safe and reliable. Thanks to a conservative approach to software updates, a unique Update Manager and the robustness of its Linux architecture, Linux Mint requires very little maintenance (no regressions, no antivirus, no anti-spyware...etc).

Have a read.  A lot of people are scared of trying Linux as they think they will not be able to do what they can now.  However, I have never wanted Windows back and hate it now.  I also don't have to worry about viruses and stuff. ;)

Very frustrating and I am getting pretty fed up with this issue.
If there is anything I can do that I haven't thought of, would be great, one more thing, I have no option for backing up PC so can't reboot with service Pkg's, really a mind bender for me as too what comes next.

This is likely something to do with the logitech setpoint software. I recently had a logitech MX500 mouse do nearly the same thing and ended up getting rid of the mouse completely. Uninstall all logitech setpoint software and use a different mouse with just the drivers installed. There also may be a wireless phone or other device interfering with the mouse signal. Switch to a directly wired mouse and try that.

Yes, this is when things went Arye for sure. I cannot allocate the Logitech Wireless setpoint software on my PC, so not sure if it DL or not, but was the beginning of the beginning for sure Ellirium.

I have tried to reconnect original Dell Mouse that came with PC, it still does not have the right click options available too me, but, I also didn't uninstal Logitech stuff. I have a Wireless headset from Logitech and the Mouse (Wireless) is Logitech as well.

Well 1st step is to uninstall and disconnect ALL logitech software for the time being...this can always be put back in later...1st thing we need to do is get the OS to work properly.

Is your Dell mouse a USB mouse or does it use the mouse port? Also does the wireless one use the same? I'll need to know this.

I had initially had connected to the front USB port when I had installed it, this is when I had the setpoint DL issues as well. Since then, I have moved and had all things disconnected, when reconnecting, I swithched USB ports for the mouse, so it may have bearing's too what you are trying to convey. Ihave now switched the Wireless mouse USB port to the back of the PC, where the original USB DELL mouse was initially connected.

Ok so at this point we need to go into your device manager and check for hardware issues...specifically looking for mouse and USB related problems. Since you can't right click...go into control panel and select SYSTEM icon. Then click on the HARDWARE tab at the top. From here you can select the device manager. Scroll down and look for your mouse and see if it is being recognized by the system. Keep scrolling down and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks on anything in the list.

I am thinking at this point there is something wrong with the USB interface and not so much the mouse specifically. This might be related to the power management stuff you were looking at.

If you can download some Linux and burn it to a CD/DVD then it would be a good way of knowing if the problem is from the drivers or from the hardware, because if everything works in Linux then it's "just" a drivers problem and the hardware is working as it should. :)

Yes, you can run it as a live cd and if it works I'm afraid that you need Windows re-installing.

If the PC can connect to the web than unless it is a brand new or legacy pc it will likely work.  There is no deed to install the Linux on the HD.  I can look up the hardware on a linux site for you if you are going to try it.  My logitech keyboard is running fine on linux.
I think your hunch that it is a USB issue is right.  Normally the basic mouse drivers for a standard USB optical mouse would still be working even with the Logitech ones installed.  So if both mice are USB and neither work that is a clue.  Try a different USB device and see if that works....

Even when I hook up the factory mouse to the USB Port that the wireless was connected too, it still doesn't have right click mouse functions Pim. As far as DL more stuff on my PC, I am eery of that, I don't want to loose everything again. Think it may be what Ellirium is duscussing though. It was issue after Setpoint for Logitech, waiting to hear what Ellirium finds out about what the operating systems power management should be, may be that simple, but am not sure as of yet.

I do remember that when Setpoint ws being attempted, it went Blue screen and then had timer for Partitions, I stopped this, or so I thought, could this have caused the issues?

I'm thinking try a ps/2 mouse instead of the USB one and see if the right click function works. Also as Pimander suggested take a known good USB device and see if it is working correctly.

If your PC is still on service pack 1 you might try updating to 2 then 3 as it will overwrite a majority of windows and possibly resolve the issue that way. I have successfully done this on other machines in the past.

At any point it appears the software running the USB power management part of the operating system may be corrupted or a specific Dell driver is missing. Looking at the BIOS settings it is pretty straight forward and nothing should cause an issue there.  last thing a guy might try is to clear the CMOS and see if it resets the BIOS back to factory origional. I had the odd locked up mother board issues resolved doing this. Let's not go there just yet though.

Ok Ellirium and the rest of you helping here, will definitely be saving that Manual, never had one with this PC, was lost in the shuffle, and always wanted one.. ;)

Will go and try these ideas, then will hopefully be back online post haste, Thanks againg for all your peoples help. It is a very frustrating situation, as I am sure you know.

Ensure you can install as many of the OEM Dell drivers as you need BEFORE updating to SP2 or 3 to ensure that these are known to windows before it tries and configures itself around a generic failsafe mode because it can't ID your hardware.  ;)

Linux Mint is the Linux Operating system with a desktop that looks like Windows (MATE, which is an updated gnome).  I think it has office programs and web browser (Firefox) etc out of the box too.

Fedora is OK too.  If you are into programming and such like Fedora is probably more  fun (tries out new technologies sooner) but if if you just want to use your PC Mint "just works".... Mint has stuff like media codecs already installed so you can go straight onto the web and watch video and play music etc.....

Best of all, hardly any worries about Malware.  Nearly all software is free and open source too.  And you won't be paying Microsoft to create a slower less stable operating system as it is free unlike Windows.

Thanks Ellirium, will try that command in "Safe Mode" and see if it works (Is this through the 'RUN' option Ellirium or command prompt?), one thing is for sure, money is not available for me as of right now, Damn insurance companies!!  >:(

[ C:/FORMAT C: ] is a DOS command  You need to be in the black screen DOS prompt. But formatting C will not restore it to factory 'default' it will erase the drive. I suppose a blank HD is technically 'factory default' but I don't thing that is what you want to do as you will lose everything on the drive including the OS

Do you have a copy of Windows? If so formatting the drive and staring from scratch would fix it, but again you will lose all other files on the disk

Sounds like your friend installed a different version of windows over top an older one. He could have installed it as a second OS then you would have had an option to select which version to boot.

Can it handle Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Photoshop?

It has LibreOffice., GIMP and a reader which all do the same thing and handle the same file types

No one told him that formatting c drive will wipe out all info. I suppose everyone assumed he knew that but since he asked where to type that command in RUN or command prompt) and said he was trying to reset factory defaults using format, my guess would be he DOESN'T know it would wipe the drive

Fine and dandy for home use.. but won't work for school or work situations as online courses require those programs. The business world and the art colleges use the MS and Adobe software as industry standard...

I assumed he already knew what that meant and he DID have a windows CD so I was thinking he was wanting to reformat and try again.  :P If it was not allowing him into the boot menu for the CD it might be that the drive priority in the BIOS is set to boot HD first and so long as windows boots it will not boot from cd. This has to be changed in the BIOS to have the cd drive set as the 1st boot device.

The solution is to save as generic formats like jpg whatever prog you use you use.  We should never be tied to one companies own file type IMO.

If you go the way I have there is no problem.  I just use open source software so no dodgy formats.

Try that with an image made from several layers, including text layers, and embedded colour profiles. GIMP is supposed to open PSD images, but it only "understands" part of the information, so I cannot consider it compatible with Photoshop.

I always try to use open source programs whenever I can, but many times it's not possible to do it and keep on working as before.

jpg is compressed and has data loss... While some modern printshops do use a hi res jpg fprmat, most printing still requires a CMYK format like tiff or equivalent. Jpg is RGB. I ususally use .png... no loss but file size is large

I have tried all ways around this, it doesn't do anything, updating drivers are useless, they are working properly and cannot find a better match , or so it states.

I have had it with this thing, even Recovery CD-ROM is a fluke, can't pull DOS from Reboot and can't do it through RUN , what else can I do? Nothing, I fear.

I have installed all components as suggested, reinstalled with update for drivers. It was all for not. Nothing has changed.

One thing I may add, I can cut in paste with in my home screen area, but once I access the internet, it no longer works and no longer can run right click operations via mouse, this is not an issue of the Control Panel, because there are no internet options available there, just as my whole format has changed for the Internet Explorer Icon, I can't even cut from Home area and paste with in IE so, may have to go to the Doctor after all.

Frustrating to say the Least...... >:(

I used to use png if I was wanting to keep all the data for similar reasons.  I rarely do much with images apart from cut one to fit or maybe a little tweak that I hardly notice not having Photoshop.  I agree it is better for some tasks than GIMP

Do you have an alternative browser installed?  Does it still not work with Opera, Chrome or Firefox?  Install one and try it.

Sounds like you will have to back up your data and wipe the hard drive.  Let someone take a look first if you don't want to have to re-install the whole system.

No Keyboard abilities with mouse functions, can't put attachments with in Emails, can't do anything if it involves the internet, but can cut & paste away with in Word or Home page programs, works fine there. Can't even erase my PM's here with in the PRC area, just doesn't work any more.

No, nothing Keyboard command works with mouse functions, it is really a bad case scenario, have the reboot to use, and can't even pull up DOS command prompt for recovery diskette.

Cannot do anything when in the IE programs. Can't even erase my old PM's here at PRC, Can't attach files or anything that is necessary for logical sharing. Pisses me off for sure.

Ahhh ok...let's try resetting your browser settings. In IE8 you need to access your internet properties screen...do this by hitting the RESET button on this screen in your internet properties.

Then check if your disk is defragmented...

Open "My Computer" and right click on the drive containing your operating system (Assuming you can do this without browser open).
 - Then select PROPERTIES
 - Select the TOOLS tab at the top
 - Hit the DEFRAGMENT NOW button

Analyze the drive containing the operating system.. it will look like something like this:

Notice all the RED lines...these are FRAGMENTED FILES which will cause glitches, freezes and general chaos in your machine.

IF IT LOOKS LIKE THE NEXT ONE YOU GOT ISSUES...

DEFRAGMENT the PC so that your files are restored in proper sequence. When completed your drive should look more like this...

As a rule I do this approx every 2 weeks...if 1 red line is there it is too many for me. It only takes 1 fragmented file to cause an issue.

I do have some RED lines, an dhte systems Analyze said it didn't need to be Defragged, am doing it any way right now. I have used this method before, it really didn't fix the Mouse issues at all, but do try to keep disk space cleaned up.

Will have to wait and see. On my Defrag page, it only shows C: as NTSF file capacity is at 37.24GB have approximately 13.66GB Free Space and over all 36% of total Space available before Defragging.

Do appreciate all you folks helping, thanks so much. ;)

OK .....

Ellirium- Defragged and viewed reports, nothing major came to my eyes. I still have no access to the IE properties, this is one of the issues I was initially having with in Control Panel, don't even have setting's with in HID mouse settings for rectifying this either. SO, same old same old.

ArMap- Went to the website, clicked the area you recommended, from the beginning of all this, and for some strange reason, the "RUN" and "Download" click buttons do nothing, this has happened to me before on the Dell and MS websites for upgrading, so it seems I can't even DL directly any more by click operations on any DLable link.

Pimander- Will not take and or accept the DL for Firefox,Opera or Chrome. I have no idea why this is, but when I tried before, it started loading then gave me an alert of incomplete due to sys error blah blah blah.

I am so sorry for all the time you are all putting into this for me, it is truly appreciated, but, as Pim had stated "What a mess" LOL :P

There is Networking programs on my PC that I did not activate or DL, I am positive that Remote is turned off, so don't think it was a hack job, was something I must have picked up somewhere on the WWW.

If I can't get this done myself, will have to wait and get it fixed by the pros's and spend some $ I guess. Really sucks for me not being able to supply information via the PRC forums, I have quite a bit I want to share with in the Inventors group and with forums in General, doesn't look as if that is going to happen any time soon, not the way that it is going thus far.  :-\

So, will have to wait and see I guess, unless there is something I have revealed here that makes sense too any of you for the problems? LOL :P

It looks like you have a malware issue mate.

If you have updated your antivirus and antispyware software and run them AND your system is STILL deteriorating then it is faulty or malicious software.  You have no choice but to wipe hard drive if I'm right.....

It is the fact that functions on your system are dropping out one by one that makes me suspicious it is likely malware.  Is there anything stored on you HD that you can't live without?  If so you could store it on a cloud site?

Do you only have one harddrive?  If you have a second drive, switch that to c drive and load a clean copy of xp on that.  That way you will have the OS on one drive and then can clean up the original

I always run my OS on its own drive and the data is on a separate drive

If you do that and still have issues with the fresh copy of windows that its a physical issue on the board

I checked the Registry for Maleware and anti virus Pim, there was no red flags so too speak, but I did notice that my updates for scanning were set at every 7 days, I had had it set for every time PC was turned on, so, not sure what too make of that for now. Reset it for the previous though, every time PC is turned on. ;) Maybe a little too late though....LOL  ::)

Yes, this is why I went into registry too see if something caught my eye, unfortunately, was nothing there. As for the loss of functions one by one, that isn't really the case. When this first started, I couldn't even get logged on to the PC. I then went through OS and rectified by restoring to an early date or time, this worked to get me back on, bu the issues started back in January , 12TH, to be exact after having to get a newer browser version of Internet Explorer for Inception Radio Network. This was something that really started the issues. I have since then gone and cleaned those things up, but with the Inception Radio thing, you had to log in or on Twitter account, now Twitter says that I signed up as an App, not a PC user, still haven't heard anything from them as of yet, but am working on it.
When I am on the NET, my tool bar does not show my "Fav's" available and can't un-collapse the venue for the information stored there, I cannot access click link accounts for such things as DL and direct view. The address bar allows me to cut but I cannot paste from cut, not even with in the home screen, but with in the Home screen, right click functions work normally, I can create PDF withimages from personal files, but can't attach such files with Email or share with in Forums or chat areas as you already know.
I have strong confidence it is either in the setting's being reconfigured or it is with in the HD program files that I can't allocate for removal. I have no MSDOS for formatting on reboot option, and when I do click in safe mode, it pulls up a whole slew of C: registries that are NTSF and Networking gibberish. I have Networking available on my PC, but I never activated it, I never have my Remote to share on, and have checked that every time I log onto the PC because of what had happened with "Z" and the Skype thing, so very vigilant about that any more. ;)
Not sure what too make of it thus far. Just frustrating, too say the least. Have stuff I want to discuss that I have researched, requires me to be able to post Videos, Pic's and quoted Text for extrapolation on these finds and research. Bum's me out for sure. >:( >:(

It is the fact that functions on your system are dropping out one by one that makes me suspicious it is likely malware.  Is there anything stored on you HD that you can't live without?  If so you could store it on a cloud site?

If it is Maleware Pim, I suppose I can contact Dell or Vipre (Virus Protection Software) for further assistance, but I feel it is something that I did too cause this with either IE8 or IRN/Twitter account registry that I can't find from my end. Like I had said, twitter has me registered as App. when I am PC, so may be creating issues for me as well.

I am going to try and back up all my Doc's/Pic's and Vid's to CD-ROM's and format my HD, but am having issues with that as well. PC doctor is sounding the safest and most practical way to go, but don't have the funds right now too do that. Sure you understand my friend.

P.S.Zorgon
I have a single HD system My friend, have other HD laying around, just never really had the need to have more than one HD on my System, try to keep this one clean, though having multiple ones may have been the way to go, that is if I can figure out how to connect another HD to my PC... They are all different Manufacturer's!! ::)

If you back up and reinstall, bear in mind that the malware can hide in your backed up data (if I'm right and it is malware).

Having your OS on a different HD than your data means if the OS has issues your data is still safe if you have to reformat and reinstall the OS

I have the additional protection of a 3 terabyte extermal USB hard drive that just plugs in like a flash drive.

Viruses, Malware etc rarely effect drives other that the c drive

But you say you cannot access DOS commands... DOS commands are on the motherboard, in the bios chips.  They have to be or you wouldn't be able to load a new hard drive

Installing a HD is easy  you just have to set the jumpers. It matters not the manufacture, Bur if you cannot access the bios DOS commands by pressing F8 on bootup then you may have a board issue.

Not all boards however use F8    Find the manufacturer of your board and google it to find the access buttons to the bios

If you have a spare hard drive and a windows xp disk   I would start by unplugging the existing drive, put in the new drive and access the bios to auto find the drives and load windows onto the new drive

If that works, then add the old drive as a slave and clean it up

Well, I went back into the "Power Shell" and "Network" stuff, Power shell has all my stuff that I use with in internet explorer, such as Favorites and and has copy & paste functions working, but IE doesn'thave it there?  ??? Could the Power Shell be the issues here, because this is one of the "NEW" things that was put on my PC, before I had never seen Power Shell as a self entity of the Programs, NOW it has the Networking and the Power shell allocated with in start up menu. Huh?

As for the MS-DOS thing, I can get it too pull up Zorgon through Safe mode in reboot F8 Function, but it shows all the NTSF stuff and networking crap, could it be the Power Shell program then?

Can you access the windows program defaults and un-install IE8 and then re-install fresh?

1st you'll want a setup for this downloaded before you lose your browser. (Might have to get someone to do this for you on another machine).

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8)

Then try going into control panel...in ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS...you can UNINSTALL IE8 and reinstall it fresh. Reinstallation may restore whatever function is corrupted.

Sorry you are so Aggravated Pim, but you should be hearing me!! LOL I a have a Windows Recovery CD, "YES!" But, using reboot and trying to repair won't allow me it gives a message that this version of Windows must be done in reboot MS-DOS program during start up, That is where I am trying to repair it, I am there, and I still get the same message, every time, no matter how many times I try.

If you are getting that perturbed with my issues , I understand, you have helped a lot for me to understand what is happening, and as far as removing IE8 Ellirium, it will only remove partial programs due to sharing of files to the system. I have had enough of the whole thing. Real Bummer from my end too PImander, don't feel you are a lone my friend.

And "Yes" 'Z' I know what Ms-DOS screen looks like, I just can't get it pulled up in normal format, it keeps bring up C: registry with NTSF and Networking crap from the registry.....

Many modern virus spread through USB connected drives, to take advantage of the popular thumb drives (or whatever they call them).

I think something like that happened to me some months ago, while reinstalling Windows on my sister's computer. The problem was a bad CD, when I tried a new one it worked.

Can you get another Windows CD from someone?

I remain skeptical this is a virus but I must remain open to the idea...Regardless at this point what happens when you try to boot the computer from the windows CD? does it boot off the cd or the hard drive first?

A windows recovery disk is not the same as an original factory install disk

For that to work during startup the CD has to BOOT first before the computer does. You do NOT want the DOS command from withing windows... you need the CD to boot first from the bios chip BEFORE windows starts

The recovery disk cannot work once the windows has loaded... It should boot from the CD and give you a blue screen with options to run setup which then gives you repair or install options

Quote
And "Yes" 'Z' I know what Ms-DOS screen looks like, I just can't get it pulled up in normal format, it keeps bring up C: registry with NTSF and Networking crap from the registry.....

because you are accessing the DOS from within windows  That is why its not working. I am tempted to tell you to unplug the HD... then boot up and see what you get on the screen  You need to get into the Bios and tell your machine to boot from CD FIRST

It is frustrating from our end because what you are describing is not making sence.

To trouble shoot you need to start at the basics and find out what is working right..

Is it plugged in, does the battery work, does the fuse work; are the first three steps in fixing alarm systems :P  You would be amazed at how many systems I repaired with those three steps :D

If you have a recovery disk that keeps asking for access in reboot that means the disk wants access BEFORE your programs load and that can only be done setting the bios to boot from CD first

Anything else you do will be useless until then

I remain skeptical this is a virus but I must remain open to the idea..

I have helped a lot of people fix computers and everytime they think its a virus or malware. So far in all the repairs I have made it has been a corrupt file, a wrongly deleted file (my wife gets first prize here... wiped out three machines in one year :P ) or some hardware deffect

Recently I found a power wire that was making intermittent contact on the C drive  Drove me nuts for some time as it was a new drive... until I moved a harness and suddenly it booted up. Changed the wire and voila  good to go.

Now I will gather up all those old PC's and Lap tops and put LINUX on them :D

That was for comic effect but it is getting irritating.

Ellirium, If it is a corrupt file then a re-install is all that is needed.  You can piss about like this for another week at this rate, 1WW doesn't know how to access the BIOS by the look of it.  No wonder we're getting confused. :P

MALWARE can include software that lets jokers access your system and change settings, trojans and other nasties besides viruses.  Don't forget, someone claimed to access his system and some odd things happened a while back on Skype.  I'm not just pissing in the wind you know.  :)

1WW,  You need a boot disk.  Go into BIOS and makes sure your PC boots from the CD FIRST..... assuming you are going to repair or reinstall Windows.  Depends how many years you want to do this for lol

ETA:  Back up files always, then whatever the problem is in future you can wipe your HD.  Personally, I'd run an operating system that is stable and let go of Windows.  My PC hasn't crashed since I switched to LINUX.

He first needs to save what he needs. He is going to need to run FDISK and rewrite the file allocation tables and do a low level format before installing or he risks yet another corrupted install. Restore the drive to factory condition and then install your OS.

He may need to run windows to access some of the specific file types. I recommend a second drive and keep all your stuff you don't want to lose on there. Run your operating system on the main drive and your other related programs. Never fill your drive beyond 80% capacity. USB sticks and drives are not reliable enough to store any data on I find. Seen many a USB drive fail.

Jokes aside, even if you are knowledgeable with the software I have seen countless issues arise from lockups due to overheated hardware and people installing multiple toolbars and excessive applications that mess up your system faster than you can say "AUTOF#%K". Not to mention some of the overclocking utilities. Also its good to check your heatsinks and fans every so often as they usually cake up full of hair, dustbunnies, nicotine cheeses etc.  :)

I saw a $10,000 server go up in smoke, pulled off the cover and the entire thing was coated in nickel dust in a mill that shorted out the motherboard.  :P

And I a, fixing to "Factory State" then adding files with reboot options, by the way "Windows XP command is <TAB> F11 for reconfigure and HD Format 'Z' so am getting it straightened out, just didn't realise D: wasn't functioning, for some reason it won't write to disk, says it is corrupt, brand new ones, I know this for sure, so will be tomorrow sometime before I can get this rectified once and for all, hurry up and wait, go figure..LOL :P

Have to disconnect everything, Printer/scanner/copier/fax, wireles headset, Digital microscope, Camera and revert to old USB DELL mouse.

That leads me to another question, "Should I use my Logitech Wireless mouse after reinstall is complete?" Just curious, was working fine until SetPoint crap, but thought I should ask you smart folks here. :)

Thanks for all your insight, is appreciated. ;)

I normally copy, then delete, C/Windows/Temp and C: My documents/ temp and C:/windows/temp internet files.

You can also flush all the cookies, that just means you will have to log in at all your favorite sites again, so keep the password book handy :P

Also, some persistent malware will install itself in the 'hive' & run from the 'startup' file. This you can acess (using windoze Manager) and see what is going to auto-start when you switch on.
Hope this helps...

P.S. If D is a separate HD you may want to check the power plug is good & tight, and check the BIOS settings (hold down F8 during boot-up??)

I run OEM drivers as much as I can. Does Microsoft know the abilities of your video card or your printer etc? For example if you have an NVIDIA video card and are running windows drivers you lose a lot of additional features of your card and it will not perform as it should. I challenge anyone here to prove me wrong on this. If you don't believe me go ahead and try and install a retail copy of windows on a Dell machine and see how well that works.

My 2 cents of caution

Never click on a button to clean the PC from any pop up alerting you the PC you are using is infested or an offer for a free scan. Its a trap, you clicky, you pay big time cause they infect you and extortion follows.

Another trick they toss at you. If you go to warez sites and a pop up sez your adobe player needs update, DON'T CLICK IT TO UPDATE. The Pirate Bay loves this one on there site.

Adobe does up dates by there software system on your machine that checks if a new version is out for up date and even than, go to the adobe website and do the up date for safety reason. Also, some may not be aware adobe has a page where you can configure your flash player to not allow the mic or video camera to be turned on by nefarious coders and there spooky flash ads.

This also allows you to set no flash cookies are to be saved and other security risk. Look at the following adobe link carefully to see how your flash is set security wise. Change it if need be right there in that flash panel window settings and be sure to observe the tabs at the top of the security panel.

I can only post the hyperlink.gutted really.seems to have only started since i had to reinstall all my drivers and reset everything.

OH and what's up with the new youtube >:( I hate it. linking everything together wanting all my details. They can sod off.give them my phone number, don't think so.

I find that sometimes the viewer clicks to a video from another video but that URL above, to that video one just clicked to, has extra stuff attached in the URL and will not work when one tries to insert that utube video between planet pegasus utube video insert brackets function.

I then simply copy paste the video title in the utube search field and get the clean URL to the video. You also have to check that video is not set for NO-EMBEDING. It will not play if the channel is set for no embeding.

Utube has a "SHARE", embed and email button below the video to get the URL for inserting into forums. Be carefull, this URL code may not work in the insertion option since it is a shortened URL and maybe not be recognized by the forums software as a legitimate URL.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ur2hhObaun0 - this video URL will work in the forums video insert function. In this video URL link, you cannot have anything after that ?v=Ur2hh0baun0

http://youtu.be/Ur2hhObaun0 - this will not work even though this URL link is to the same video above only taken from the share option off the utube video. you will be presented by this forums alert invalid youtube link.

go down to this little box and go thru the whole thing to set it the way you want..
do it everytime you update

i have mine set to never update and i go check for a new version every so often and then reset
all of these boxes...so that no one is storing stuff on my computer
i like the games now and then and it does limit what you can play by not allowing those buggers to use you for storage..

Thanks for the Adobe link and GODDAMMIT there was a list of site's that seemed to have access to my webcam/mic! lucky for me I have a sticker over the camera (call me paranoid but I don't like the thing)

Yes I know some of the tricks they use Gigas,But it's always handy to have extra information thanks.
I reckon with a little practice I shall gain back the ability to post the screen instead of just the link.
And maybe some settings changed,It was fine and it does seem sporadic in nature as i have posted a few youtube video's recently and they worked fine. And the one's i cant get to work are not embed blocked.strange.

YES have done all that thanks SKY OTTER.

Just ran into this short article...those of you having re-installing operating system issues may want to take note...

Install any version of Windows using any Windows disc you can find

Quote
Reader Chris needs to reinstall Windows 7 Home Basic on his laptop. Just one problem: he lost his recovery discs.

A more common problem is when you need to reinstall Windows and you never had recovery discs to begin with. Few manufacturers provide them anymore, and many new PCs don't have optical drives even if they did.

Thankfully, there's a way around this. All you need is a Windows ISO file (basically the entire Windows operating system in a single container) and the free Ei.cfg Removal Utility. The latter deletes a key file inside the former, thus allowing you to install any version of Windows.

Let me explain that a bit further. Windows 7 and 8 installation discs are version-specific; they're designed to match up with your product key. That's why you can't use, say, a Windows 7 Home Premium product key to install Windows 7 Professional, even if you have a disc for the latter.

Likewise, even if Chris somehow laid hands on a Windows 7 Home Premium disc, his Home Basic license key wouldn't work. That's where Ei.cfg Removal Utility comes in: It effectively creates a "universal" Windows ISO, one that will install whatever version matches your product key.

From a high-level perspective, the process would work like this: Borrow a friend's install DVD, copy the ISO file from it to your hard drive, then run Ei.cfg. When it's done doing its thing, use the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to put that tweaked ISO on a flash drive.

Now, just boot from that flash drive and choose the version of Windows you want to install. Enter your license key and you're good to go. (Don't bother trying to sneak an upgrade; remember, your key will work only with the version of Windows that came with your PC. In Chris' case, that's Windows 7 Home Basic.)

Can't find an install disc or don't have an optical drive? There are "official" Windows 7 SP1 ISO downloads available from the Windows 7 Forums.

I may be wrong, but I think installing disks have all versions of Windows (since Windows Vista), it's the key that activates or deactivates the features for each version.

That's why there's a "Get more features with a new edition of Windows" (or something like that, that's the translation of what I see on my version, in Portuguese). If you choose that option you can enter a key and change to that version/edition.

Lock in on downloads? I don't understand what you mean. ???

For downloads I have been using for years Free Dowload Manager, one of the advantages is that it tries several connections at the same time, so, if the server allows it, it can join those several connections to make a faster download. It also resumes downloads, if the server allows it.

I have also used with good results JDownloader.

They are both free. :)

Many moons ago I had a free downloader program that would lock in on the host and keep at it till it was done, Even if the signal went to zero. Now if my signal drops say less than 50% the connection drops and I have to start all over even if I was 99% done. It would make a connection somehow to maintain a packet drop or stream very constant. Improving all downloads by a huge factor. You could even pause them and start later.

Could it be a media problem? That happened to me some years ago, I couldn't install XP on my sister's computer until I tried to make a new CD.

If the computers can boot from an USB drive you could try that.

I wont rant but dell ticks me off. Been reading and you have to have a library of disks to get these things going again using windows. Different build dates. So many comp going to the dump because of this.

So what about Lenux? Any users out there? I try to give these old comp to the needy. Lexus seems to be the way to go.

Any ideas

I use Linux on some computers, but I'm not a great fan, as any extra configuration may turn out much complex than it could be.

Today I had a good example of that: I wanted to install something on Linux (Ubuntu 11.04) so I tried the both the command line and the GUI versions of the installer, but neither was able of installing it. The problem is that Ubuntu makes a new version every year (or something like that) and they move the older versions to a different server, so although they still exist they do not exist on the server where the installer is searching. After adding the server with the older versions to the list of servers everything worked as smoothly as expected.

Ubuntu and Mint are usually considered the most user-friendly Linux distributions.

512MB of RAM is not much memory to play with. It will be using your hard drive as a buffer for anything over that it needs so be prepared to go through many cups of coffee as your hair and nails grow waiting for it to finish loading programs you try and run.

A web server with only the essential services needs less resources than a general purpose system.

From what I found yesterday, it looks like Firefox is the browser that uses less memory, but, from my experience, it's the one with memory leaks, so if left open for too long it starts getting more and more memory. As I never shutdown my computer, only suspend it, so, to me, that was a problem. :)

It may also be a problem if you open many tabs at the same time.

PS: you can also look at lightweight browsers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_lightweight_web_browsers). :)

Thats when firefox not "decides" to crash and close due to the many tabs issue. I dropped the firefox. Now im using Chrome. After 2 weeks what i can say is that it is more stable, no crashes so far. IE i never gave a try because i had so many problems in the past that i just can even see the logo.

Takes some time to fit chrome... Install some extensions like ghostery, adblock, etc and adjust preferences... But im pretty happy with the results.

I never had any problems with IE. :)

Now, the browsers I use the most are Opera Next, IE and Chrome, with Opera Next being the one I use the most. It's based on Chromium, the same code used by Chrome, but with many changes made by the Opera programmers, and, even if it's still missing many of the great features the original Opera had, is my favourite. :)

I personally settled back on using chrome. I tried Firefox for awhile, then Waterfox (Which I liked better than FF itself) but they both ended up bogging down too quickly with tabs and extensions.

Chrome seems to run smoother, even if privacy becomes something like wishful thinking by default. (literally!..lol) Heck..I just started using Google's DNS servers too. Why not benefit from the speed and stability when their browser gives them the same data already, anyway. (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for anyone not into networking enough to know them)

The thrift shop thing don't work for me. I am a country boy. The nearest shop is in the city about 30 miles away. There is a comp recycling place that I do business with when I have enough scrap for trade. I do find things at yard sales.

Adobe is telling people to stop using Flash

Adobe is finally ready to say goodbye to Flash. In an announcement last night, Adobe said that it will now "encourage content creators to build with new web standards," such as HTML5, rather than Flash. It's also beginning to deprecate the Flash name by renaming its animation app to Animate CC, away from Flash Professional CC.

The following plugin has crashed

Flash has been slowly dying over the past decade, in part due to an absence of support on smartphones and in part because it's kind of become a scourge of the internet. Though Flash initially had great success as a tool for creating web games and animations, it has a number of downsides that have stood out more and more each year. Flash pages and players can be slow to load and a big drain on laptop batteries. More importantly, Flash has continually been subject to security issues, making it a major risk for anyone browsing the web.

Adobe is by no means doing away with Flash — that's ultimately up to web developers. Instead, this announcement is more an acknowledgement of reality. HTML5 has been taking Flash's place as the go-to tool for animation and interactivity; it's an all-around better choice, and it's an open standard.

By acknowledging that Flash is dying, Adobe is able to better position its animation tools for the future. Flash Professional CC is already capable of creating HTML5 content — in fact, it already represents a third of all content created in the app, according to Adobe. By taking up the name Animate CC, Adobe is able to sell Flash Professional CC as a general animation tool, rather than a tool geared toward Flash. The name change will take effect early next year.

Flash itself will not be changing, and Adobe is continuing to support it. However, it sounds like that support will most heavily focus on security. Adobe says it will be working with Microsoft and Google to maintain Flash's compatibility and security inside of web browsers. It's also going to be working with Facebook to make sure that Flash games remain secure. Adobe says that it expects to see Flash use continue, for now, in web gaming and "premium" video, because HTML5 or other standards "have yet to fully mature" to meet those areas' needs.

Is there a  most common place where most Spyware and Viruses are installed?

Some AV, Spyware or Malware programs seemed to or used to have to scan ones whole system that may take some time to complete the full scan.

On some Antivirus or malware spyware programs..(seems more so now) you can just select certain folders or files as to where one want to concentrate the scan..ie what folders you want  to check..

When I have had such spyware malware issues in the past, they have often been found in the windows System 32 folder..

Would any of the more experienced in such things generally agree if there does seem to be a more likely place to check when running such programs..

I say this as many programs can take several hours to run in full..and sometimes one may have a case of their computer being almost totally hardly performing...

but sometimes if you can target an area fast with such AV programs it can help detect viruses quickly to at least allow the computer to perform better.

I am trying one called spybot at moment...on my other computer...and I was able to select windows system 32 folder... but even just checking this... it says it will take a long time to run.. as it comes up with such a mesage prior to running it..

It says it will be over 6000 files..

If I was to fully scan the whole system in such a detailed check, it will take days I would imagine...

some other AV product scans are much shorter between 1 to 7 hrs ..so I suspect that they only check certain parts of ones system..

This link suggests viruses can generally be found anywhere..but from my past experiences, I would have to agree most past issues where found in Windows System 32..

Spybot is an excellent program. I use it in conjunction with Norton and haven't had any issues even browsing sights where the antivirus warning is picking up all sorts of things.

One thing that is recommended though is to turn off your system restore. If a Trojan resides in there the antivirus may not touch it. If it is turned off, no trojan can reside there period.

Not really, it depends on how your computer gets the infection.

For example, if it gets it from an Internet site, it will probably be on your temporary Internet files (or equivalent), while if you install it along with some other software it will most likely be on that program's folder or on the Windows folder.

Thanks for you tip  E115..

I will have to check how to do that on the system that I use..I had not been aware to do that...but it maybe very valid..

With ref to Spybot...

At one time there did not seem a obvious website one could trust to download Spybot .. as there seemed various websites that had download links on it and No website claiming to be the product owners actual website..

this one as an eg..that is still quite a well known or used website but I dont think its directly classed as Spybots website..

http://download.cnet.com/s/spybot/

But I have found this website and assume its the best one to download from..

http://spybot-search-destroy.en.softonic.com/download

It seems to have changed quite a bit since I had last used it..but in the past it had found things other AV and Malware programs failed to find..

One times on another PC that I had a very bad issue with.. I found a good forum ...geeks to go forum.. where they have experts who do offer to try to help you if they can..and they do take you thru quite a process to fully test and check ones system..

The recommended certain AV programs etc that they suggest you use and run to do their checks..

they have succeeded each time I have used them in correcting my issues , but it does take a few days to go thru usually...as they are only volunteers..who usually want to develop their skills but are referred to by what I believed to be trusted sources..

At that time they suggested that I did not use Spybot...but maybe that was the older version...Id be curious to see if they may now say different..

I may have to try them again if Spybot fails to find any issues..

I had tried two other programs but they found nothing..

I was trying to use systems that were able to check certain parts rather than having to do a full scan..

I have certain folders that contain loads of images or document files that I doubt have any issues and I hate having to use other AV programs that always go thru checking those each time..it takes ages to go thru...

Cheers..

Thanks for your explanation ArMaP..

That is useful to know..and may help how best to target certain areas..if I can select those folders / files to be checked in a scan..

Im not sure if generally you maybe able to delete the Temporary files if sometimes that may also get rid of any threats that may have occurred that way... or if what ever temp file was brought into ones system has then gone on to infect other areas of one system..

ON one AV program I used when I was being advised on a Computer geeks forum... the software that they had me use seemed to find two lots of temporary files...not just the std ones that you can easily select and delete...maybe they were others in the windows folder.. but it got rid of a lot more temp files than I had previously been aware of.

The Program files have also been another area in the past where I have found viruses..or infections...

I will check them next if my computer does not improve if it detects and deletes something in the System 32 folder..

cheers

I am not sure how the original Spybot website is NOT at least on page 1 of two major search engines..unless I am missing seeing it.

but there are websites that appear to be the original site unless they are partnered with it..

It looks similar to the one that I have downloaded...maybe identical in terms of what it can do..

but it maybe a better bet to delete the other and try the link you gave me to be more certain..

I dont know why but I never wrote the actual websites domain in my browser....ie .....www . spybot.com

I had looked for the link in the search engine to click on..

upon just trying to do so, it does redirect to the site that you gave..

https://www .safer-networking.org/en/home/

Thanks again for you help.

In cases like this I always look at Wikipedia, as they usually have a link for the site of the creator of any program they talk about.

In this case, Spybot's site is here (https://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/).

After 20 years using the Internet I should know some tricks. :)

I don't know about other search engines, but Google sorts the results by number of pages pointing to that page, so the more popular pages appear first, even if they are not the most relevant.

Hi "Z",

I am Guilty !   :-[  :)

You make valid comments..

I  had wrote in Spybot Free (download) in the search engine box.

Looking again now in hindsight.. the website is on the top position on page one..

The Reason that I did not click on it however... was because when I looked at the wording.. it had the URL wrote in it..and it did not say Spybot in the url..

where as some others that were listed below  did have spybot wrote in the url..

such as for eg

http://spybot -search-destroy .en.softonic.com/download

I know many a time I do searches for specific words or related websites and find other websites in the top 5 places that are nothing to do with the specific thing that I am searching for...

I didn't expect Spybot to have a website to have a wording wrote as Safer- networking   or a URL wrote as..

https://www .safer-networking.org/

I expected it to have the name Spybot wrote in it somewhere..

even if Spybot . com had been taken..

Most companies if they can usually try to include its main name (or product / service brand name ) in the URL...and spybot has been going some years so.. I would had thought it could have obtained a suitable url with Spybot wrote in it somewhere..

Lastly.. even if I had clicked on the correct URL... I still would not have known it was the right website..unless I was correctly informed...as there can be so many similar  copy like type websites.    :P

The top positions on the google search are usually paid ads  (but they have a yellow 'ad' box beside it  Sometimes these ads will disguise themselves as the real company

Search "basketball shoes" and you will see what I mean as an example

Personally I prefer IObit Malware and IObit Advanced Windows Care  both free  I also use their IObit Uninstall to really clean old programs

Thanks for confirming the Free download E113.
I can now see that listed in 3rd position on Google.

I wonder if the other versions that are listed are the same product..when they make out that they are SPYBOT.. ?

or if the Spybot program from the link you wrote is totally original ? and maybe definitely better / more  trustworthy..

Yes , that was another reason that I didnt also click on the link was because often the top positions on the Search engines are paid ads.. and I again would had thought that Spybot  would not need to pay to place their ads if they are the original businesses website..

BUT I know that google advertising can be dominated by those who understand whats known as search engine optimization.. (SEO )where one can can ones website highly ranked in the top positions if they know what to do..

I had not been aware of  IObit Malware...

I will try it..

Last Night I ran the Spybot program (that I thought was the right one)... and just ran it by using an option to select specific folders..
I selected one in Windows called "System 32"

It came up with info telling me it was going to check about 6000 files..

this folder is just a very small part of my whole system and the search took several hours....

unfortunately It did not find anything..

Yet as I mentioned in a prior post in this thread.. I can scan my whole system with other programs in the same time..

so I don't really understand why it took so long..
and I dont think it was because my system was running too poorly or slow...as It had actually speeded up from the day before..
where I had ran it.. and It seemed to react to something...(maybe found a problem) but the computer just froze up totally..

I had to restart it ...and it then seemed to run better... but it never confirmed that it had found and deleted any spyware..

Its running better than it was but Its still not running any where near as well as it should be..

Fragmented hard drive can make your system slow...so can heat issues and power supply issues. Have you tried defragmenting?

This is what a healthy hard drive looks like:

This is what installing multiple toolbars and 2 antivirus programs running simultaneously while leaving your system low on RAM can do:

I have defragmented one of my 2 computers  that I have or had in the  last 3 years....but I am not certain if it was the one I am using..

(I had a stressful things occur during that time that distracted me in that time..that effected my memory to recall such details unfortunately)

but it may well be in need of another defrag.. It is worth considering..

As for running more than one AV or malware program..

I have not seen that demonstrated in the way you have shown before..

I did delete other such programs prior to trying the Spybot one..
but I believe that their maybe also one within Windows...
But its not one that I downloaded otherwise if it is or had been running..

As far as I had been aware.. I ran the AV and Malware / spyware programs that I tried recently all separately..

I would guess you need a serious defragmenting. In order to maintain a healthy drive you should defragment your computer at LEAST once a month. It only takes a few fragmented files to adversely affect your entire system.

So long as you UNINSTALL the program correctly there should be no issues. You should do this from your add remove programs icon in your control panel in windows. I would recommend afterwards to restart your computer before trying to install the next one.

If the normal uninstall process fails or doesn't uninstall everything, try the Norton Removal Tool (https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us).

PS: I never used it, as I never had a Norton product on any of my computers.

http://www.smarterweblife.com/2073/

if you live in the US and have a computer, tablet or smartphone connected to the internet, then this may be the most important news you read all year.

Earlier this month we saw thousands of people across the US get their hands on the the latest Online ID protection from SaferWeb, after yet another increase in identity theft and web-history monitoring.

We have however been advised that because of its unexpected popularity, availability is very limited and is now on a first come first serve basis.

Experts Are Now Calling SaferWeb, “A Game Changer For Internet Users”

As part of the special promotion due to end June 25, 2016, a group of Engineers teamed up with innovative new software provider SaferWeb, to provide the latest ID Protection thats just gone viral.

If you have a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone connected to the internet, your activities could be monitored and private information collected when you’re Internet shopping or banking. Even just browsing online is a risk in 2016.

SaferWeb had a primary objective to eliminate this by boosting security and ensure eavesdroppers cannot make sense of your encrypted communications.

Technical Lead John McBride, from SaferWeb explains; Our main objective for creating the app was pretty simple. We wanted to help users protect their Identity & Internet Connection to eliminate the risk of any online, banking or personal information being stolen, monitored or hacked”

The company SaferWeb seemed to deliver on this objective perfectly. Using their technology will give a private tunnel between you and the internet that’s invisible to hackers or any malware, letting you browse the Internet anonymously and securely. Literally anyone can use it and it only takes 5 minutes to set up.
