"It only lives because of people like Thor."

And the miniscule amount of people who are concerned enough to buy a counter and take the true and verifiable data into the world of "normal" people.

It's alright wringing our hands and saying "what to do, what to do.." It's better to take some action, even if it costs a few dollars and makes you feel a little embarrassed...

Get a cumulative counter, verify the data for yourself, show others and when you get a live one, that is also concerned about this clear and present danger, point them in the direction where you got your counter from...

Please.

Once the public at large is made aware of this fact, could it bring an end to Obama’s re-election chances?"

Nope. But it didn't matter - Romney would have been just as bad.  Both are puppets.  And Obama had the election sewn up with "voting" machines and other machinations.  There was no real choice.

how about a cumulative dose meter/geiger meter app.
put it in all cellphones.
have a cookie that reports daily to a central system.this would be a world map that is available to all members.

yes i believe a nuke could implode other nukes near by.it would be secondary though.im not a hundred percent on this though.
if it just blew it into the air.that would really be bad news

ok,how about a giant dozer push the whole thing out ,spread it out .that way the reaction ends.the tons of material can be transfered and buried by robots before any of the above proposals are done of course.

One of the problems with that scenario is that the corium has left the building and thought to be somewhere below (18 meters was a speculation by TEPCO about six months post 311) 'containment.'

Quote
what im saying is an air cannons pressure could be adjusted to just blow it out at a certain velocity.say a hundred mph.shot directly at the molten pool.it should disperse in blobs.these blobs being separated, would slow the reaction down significantly.hopefully to the point of resolidifying.

See above.

This is the much-feared 'China Syndrome' at work here in Japan.   :P

There is not a clear shot at the blob as it is burrowing its way through the sandstone under Fukushima at this point.

Quote
the cannon would be mounted on a dozer remotely controled by shielded control wire cable.

if are doesnt work the high pressure water ,maybe superchilled to increase its density.
it all comes down to getting that molten glob seperated.

We need more out-of-the-box thinkers like yuz, my friend, or those morons in Japan will continue to ignore the situation because they don't have a clue and the whole of mankind suffers - more.

Thanks, Robo.    :)

The Continuing Fukushima Cover Up

The New York Academy of Medicine celebrated the second anniversary of Fukushima’s nuclear disaster with a two day Fukushima Symposium on March 11th and 12th.

Sponsored by the Helen Caldicott Foundation and Physicians for Social Responsibility, the event consisted of presentations from a broad range of physician and non-physician researchers specialized in the effects of nuclear radiation on the environment and human health. It was videoed and can be viewed free on-line (see links below).

What the symposium makes crystal clear is that there has been a deliberate effort by Japanese government, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the Obama administration, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) to minimize the long term health consequences of nuclear fallout, especially to children.

Instead of backtracking on the billions of dollars he approved to subsidize TEPCO to build more US nuclear power plants,

Obama is participating in an international cover-up to conceal the serious long term dangers of this technology.

See After 50 Years Nuclear Power Still not Viable Without Subsidies.

I found the March 11th presentation by Dr Steven Starr of the Clinical Laboratory Science Program at the University of Missouri the most illuminating. The focus of Starr’s talk was the long term effects of Cesium-137, which is the main long term contaminant of soil and food following a nuclear accident.

The research Starr presents directly contradicts a study WHO published two months ago called The Health Risk Assessment From the Nuclear Accident after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

The latter supports the Japanese government’s position that the radioactive contamination deposited immediately after meltdown has dissipated and there is no longer any risk of eating food produced there.

Buoyed by the WHO study, the Japanese government has already declared Fukushima rice totally safe provided it emits less than 100 Becquerels (Bq) per kilogram (kg). (A Becquerel is one atomic disintegration per second.)

Research conducted after Chernobyl contradicts this directive.

According to Starr, children in the Ukraine and Belarus routinely exposed to more than 50 Bq per kg of Cesium-137 (from the Chernobyl meltdown) Chernobyl suffered irreversible heart damage.

According to Starr WHO and IRCP are guilty of four main scientific errors:

   1.   WHO and IRCP quantify radiation exposure in Sieverts or milliSieverts (mSv). This is extremely controversial because a Sievert isn’t a measure of actual radiation exposure but of presumed radiation “effect” based on mathematical modeling.

   2.   WHO and IRCP studies are based on an assumption that Cesium-137 is spread uniformly throughout the body, whereas their own research shows it bioaccumulates in specific organs.

   3.   None of the WHO and IRCP studies incorporate Dr Yuri Bandazhevsky’s detailed research into Belarusian children exposed to Cesium-137 following Chernobyl, which has only recently been translated into English.

   4.   None of the WHO and IRCP studies distinguish between external exposure and chronic internal exposure due to radionuclides that accumulate in vital organs.

Basic Scientific Facts About Cesium-137 and Fallout from Fukushima
Cesium-137 is released as a gas and has chemical properties similar to potassium. Thus it reaches highest concentrations in potassium-rich foods, like berries and mushrooms and in animal products at the top of the food chain (e.g. milk and meat). In the body it accumulates in the same organs in which potassium accumulates (heart, pancreas and other endocrine organs, intestine and kidneys).

Eight months after the Fukushima meltdown, the Japanese Science Ministry released a map showing that 11,580 square miles, 30,000 square kilometers, or 13% of the Japanese mainland, had been contaminated with Cesium-137. The official government map fails to designate any cesium-137 contamination in the Tokyo metropolitan area, unlike an independent survey done by Professor Yukio Hayakawa of Gunma University.

(People may recall the government also tried to deny for two months that there had been any meltdowns.)   :P

Somewhere between 4500 and 7700 square miles (an area approximately the size of Connecticut) was found to have radiation levels that exceeded Japan’s previous allowable exposure limit of 1 mSv per year.

Rather than evacuate this area, Japan chose to raise its acceptable radiation exposure from 1mSv to 20 mSv per year.

Studies show that a dose of 20 mSv per year, will produce 1,000 additional cases of cancer in female infants and 500 in male infants (per 100,000 in their age group.). There will be also sn additional 100 per 100,000 cancer cases in 30 year-old-males.

The Effect of Chronic Cesium-137 Exposure
Based on Bandazhevsky’s research, Starr questions whether even 1 mSv (14,000 Bq) per year is safe in children, as WHO and ICRP claim. The figure is based on the assumption that absorbed Cesium-137 is distributed uniformly throughout the body.

Research done by Dr. Yuri Bandazhevsky and his colleagues in Belarus between 1991 and 1999, found that children exposed to whole body radiation levels above 50 Bq per kg of body weight experienced irreversible damage to their heart and other vital organs.

Bandazhevsky summarized his nine years of research in a paper entitled “Radioactive Cesium and the Heart.” With the help of friends, Starr has just finished editing an English translation of this work.

It has never been translated before because shortly after Bandazhevsky presented it to the Parliament and President of Belarus, he was arrested and imprisoned.

Just as Soviet physicians were forbidden to diagnose radiation-related illness following Chernobyl, the Belarusian government vigorously suppressed the work of Bandazhevsky, who was protesting government efforts to resettle people back into land badly contaminated with Cesium-137.

Two million people in Belarus live on lands severely contaminated by cesium-137. Fourteen years following Chernobyl, most of the children there were in very poor health.

45 to 47% of high school graduates had physical disorders, including gastrointestinal anomalies, abnormal heart function and cataracts, and 40% were diagnosed with chronic “blood disorders” and malfunctioning thyroids.

Links:
You can watch a video of Stars presentation at Implications of Massive Cesium-137 Contamination and read the transcript at Cesium-137 transcript. You can watch the entire 2-day symposium at Symposium webcast.

The presentations on Day 2 focus more heavily on the distribution of the radioactive plume that reached the US (and not just the West Coast),

and the growing Fukushima-related health problems in Americans.

The final event on the March 11 morning webcast is a presentation by two US sailors whose aircraft carrier was anchored off Fukushima. They describe how Navy negligence and disinformation caused both to be exposed to heavy doses of radiation – and the major health problems they’re dealing with. You can watch it at press conference and read all the gory details at More Vets Join Fukushima Lawsuit.

From the Adding insult to injury Department:

As part of the cover up, the Japanese government has launched a campaign to get residents to buy and eat food produced in and around Fukushima.

They claim that after two years the radioactive contamination has nearly all dissipated.    :P

Fukushima Governor Yuuhei Sato claims Fukushima rice is totally safe provided it emits less than 100 Becquerels (Bq) per kilogram (kg).

This directly contradicts decades of Chernobyl-related research linking Cesium-137 exposure to serious medical problems in Ukrainian and Belarusian children.

Following a nuclear accident, Cesium-137 persists in the soil for a little over 100 years.

Level Three Incident
Declared at
Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant

21 August 2013

Two years, five months and eleven days (895 days) since the March 11, 2011 earthquake, tsunami and triple melt-throughs - the situation at the Fukushima nuclear plant not only remains critical - but it may be much worse than the smokescreen of disinformation and outright prevarications TEPCO and the JAPGOV have been leaking to the world on a daily basis.

Fukushima is a continuing nuclear disaster, 24/7/365 – it did not end when the world’s mainstream media abruptly stopped reporting on it just a few months after it began.

We have been attempting to sound the alarm for quite some time, and it seems that every week, there is a new admission by TEPCO that ‘estimates we made in the past are perhaps off by a few thousand percent.’   :P

And now, another travesty in this never-ending fiasco is revealed.

We think it’s about time this catastrophe is taken out of the incapable hands of TEPCO and handled by a world-class consortium of thinkers, doers and perhaps even scientists.   :P

The real question might be:

Why hasn’t this already happened?

Fukushima Watch: A Level 3 Incident at Daiichi

Quote
Japan’s new nuclear watchdog decided on Wednesday morning to declare a radioactive spill at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant a Level 3 — or “serious incident” — on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.

That’s a scale, overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency, that lets us compare, for instance, the 2011 meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi (a “7”) with the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl (also a “7”) with the 1999 uranium-processing accident at Tokaimura, Japan, which caused two deaths but didn’t spread contamination widely beyond the accident site (a “4”).

Though there have been contaminated-water leaks at Fukushima Daiichi before, the reason this is a Level 3 is because there’s a lot of water (300 metric tons) and it’s very radioactive (measurements of more than 100 milliseiverts per hour — which is the level at which cancer risks are seen as rising, and equivalent to double the maximum dosage that workers at the plant are allowed in an entire year).

Japanese authorities are set to dramatically increase the level of their warning about the severity of a toxic water leak at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the country's nuclear watchdog says.

The deepening crisis at the Fukushima plant will be upgraded from a Level One "anomaly" to a Level Three "serious incident" on an international scale for radiological releases,

a spokesman for Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) said on Wednesday.

It's the highest level of alert since the plant's meltdown after the 2011 Tsunami. Al Jazeera's Caroline Malone reports.

TEPCO admits leakage of 300 tons of water with monstrous radiation level — RT News

20 August 2013
Quote
Another tank with highly radioactive water at the devastated Fukushima nuclear power plant has leaked, reported operator TEPCO. The contaminated water contains an unprecedented 80 million Becquerels of radiation per liter. The norm is a mere 150 Bq.

A spokesman for the Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said on Tuesday that 300 tons of highly radioactive water has leaked from a stainless steel tank on the territory of the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The storage tank breach of about 300 metric tons of water (300,000 liters, 80,000 gallons) is separate from contaminated water leaks reported in recent weeks, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co said on Tuesday.

The latest leak is so contaminated that a person standing half a meter (1 ft 8 inches) away would, within an hour, receive a radiation dose five times the average annual global limit for nuclear workers.

After 10 hours, a worker in that proximity to the leak would develop radiation sickness with symptoms including nausea and a drop in white blood cells.

"That is a huge amount of radiation.
The situation is getting worse,"

Quote
said Michiaki Furukawa, who is professor emeritus at Nagoya University and a nuclear chemist.

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has classified the leak as a Level One incident, the second lowest on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES) for radiological releases, a spokesman informed Reuters.

Quote
The incident is the first Level One since the actual catastrophe at Fukushima in March 2011 when Japanese authorities issued an INES rating - which was finally raised to Level Seven.

Level One means that the incident is classified as anomalous situation that exceeds limits of safe functioning of an installation. The most dangerous, Level Seven, has only been applied twice: for the Chernobyl catastrophe in 1986 and the meltdown of three reactors at Fukushima plant itself.

Quote
Release of radioactive energy is measured in Becquerels, i.e. radioactive decay collision events per second happening in a certain volume of material. The internationally accepted normal radioactivity level is 150 Becquerels.

According to TEPCO’s own measurements the puddle that formed around the damaged tank is emitting radiation of 100 Millisieverts per hour, as a probe has been taken about half a meter from the water, reported Kyodo News.

A dose rate measured in Sieverts indicates how much radiation a person would receive standing near the source of radiation.

A typical release of radiation is generally taken for 1 Millisievert per year, but exposure limits for the nuclear industry personnel are much higher. Still, an hour near that puddle of radioactive water is equivalent to five years of total radiation exposure – even for TEPCO staff deployed at the Fukushima site.

8 August 2013
18:30 GMT: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says it closely follows the leak of radioactive water from Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea and is ready to provide help if necessary.

"Japanese authorities have explained their planned countermeasures against current leakage and further leakages,"

IAEA’s director of public information, Serge Gas, said in a statement.

He noted that the IAEA had already provided recommendations to Japanese authorities on how to manage liquid waste, and that a report from a mission in April had encouraged TEPCO to review its strategy for handling water that had accumulated at the site.

Quote
TEPCO has to keep the melted uranium fuel rods of three destroyed reactors awash with water using a jerry-rigged system only to keep the melted debris cool and relatively stable. To establish a closed cycle of the process, the operator stores huge amounts of radioactive water at Fukushima nuclear facility.

It is believed that overall there are more than 350,000 tons of radioactive water stored at the Fukushima plant in special tanks and the drainage system,

and without special protection
in the basements of the devastated facility.

Quote
At the beginning of 2013, TEPCO drained most of the basement galleries, pumping radioactive water into newly delivered tanks.

However, the rate at which contaminated water has been pouring into the Pacific Ocean from the disabled Fukushima nuclear plant is worse than thought before, an Industry Ministry official said as PM Shinzo Abe pledged to step up efforts to halt the crisis.

"We think  that the volume of water is about 300 tons a day,"

said Yushi Yoneyama, an official with the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, which regulates Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO).

7 August 2013
The Fukushima plant is leaking contaminated water at a rate of 300 tons per day, the Japanese government reported. Tokyo estimates that the cleanup of the disaster would take more than 40 years and cost some $11 billion.

TEPCO confirmed the leak but refused to confirm the quantity being emitted from the plant.

"We are not currently able to say clearly how much groundwater is actually flowing into the ocean,"

Tokyo Electric Power spokesman Noriyuki Imaizumi said.

Quote
TEPCO insists that since the tanks are located on elevated ground some 500 meters from the seashore, the puddle from the damaged tank has not escaped into the Pacific Ocean. Still, the level of contaminated water in the tank continues to lower, the company stated.

One might question those figures. There is a bit of discrepancy between 500 and 100.   :P

But, that's TEPCOSPEAK.  Another quote from TEPCO:

Quote
TEPCO hasn't figured out how or where the water leaked, but suspects it did so through a seam on the tank or a valve connected to a gutter around the tank.

TEPCO said that because the tank is about 100 meters (330 feet) from the coastline, the leak does not pose an immediate threat to the sea. But Hideka Morimoto, a spokesman for Japan's nuclear watchdog, the Nuclear Regulation Authority, said water could reach the sea via a drain gutter.

At the same time the ruined reactors of the Fukushima nuclear facility are located practically on the coast.

!!!   DISCLOSURE   !!!

And while the melted cores of the three destroyed reactors have burnt through the concrete basement of the reactor zone,

Quote
radioactive water is soaking down into soil, eventually getting into the Pacific Ocean – a fact confirmed by radiation samples.

Just some of Fukushima's above-ground storage tanks seen from the air. (The Yomiuri Shimbun via AP Images)

Quote
TEPCO says the tanks that have leaked use rubber seams that were intended to last about five years. Ono said TEPCO plans to build additional tanks with welded seams that are more watertight, but will still have to rely on ones with rubber seams.

About 350 of some 1,000 steel tanks built across the plant complex containing nearly 300,000 tons (300 million liters, 80 million gallons) of partially treated contaminated water are less-durable ones with rubber seams.

"We have no choice but keep building tanks, or there is no place to store the contaminated water," Ono said.

Leakage of radiation-contaminated water has been the major threat to Japan’s population and environment from the very beginning of the Fukushima disaster.

But until recently TEPCO has been flatly denying that radioactive waste is escaping into the Pacific.

Only in late July the company acknowledged the fact that contaminated water is escaping from basements and trenches of the Fukushima plant into the ocean.

We proposed more than two years ago the idea of acquiring an aging oil tanker ship like this one and utilizing it for water storage.  It would seem to be a lot quicker to 'install' and probably much more leak-proof... and transportable.   :P

27 July 2013
Water samples taken at an underground passage below the Fukushima nuclear power plant showed extreme levels of radiation comparable to those taken immediately after the March 2011 catastrophe, TEPCO reveals in a statement. The tested water, which had been mixing with ground water and flowing into the ocean, contained 2.35 billion Becquerels of cesium per liter –

some 16 million times above the limit.

22 July 2013
The operator of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, TEPCO, admits that crippled plant’s reactors continue to leak highly contaminated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean.

Earlier TEPCO had claimed that while it was struggling to find enough storage space for contaminated water and detected soaring levels of radioactive cancer-causing cesium in ground waters under the plant, seawater data had shown “no abnormal rise in the levels of radioactivity.”

Japanese authorities have demanded that TEPCO take immediate measures to stop radioactive leakage into the ocean.

Japanese authorities are working in crisis mode, attempting to assure the public both at home and abroad that the situation will not further deteriorate into a widespread environmental catastrophe.

Quote
Yoneyama said the government plans to reduce the leakage amount to 60 tons per day by as early as December, but given the Japanese government’s progress in the cleanup to date that goal may be difficult to achieve. Removing 300 tonnes of groundwater, however, would not necessarily halt leakage into the sea, he said.

Red Herring!
 That’s 300 tons per day.

Earlier, TEPCO said it detected 2.35 billion becquerels of cesium per liter in water that is now leaking into the groundwater through cracks in the plant’s drainage system.

This radiation level
is roughly the same as
that measured in April 2011.

The normal level is 150 becquerels of cesium per liter of water.

Quote
For the past two years, TEPCO has claimed that it managed to siphon off the excess water into specially-constructed storage tanks. However, the company was forced to admit late last month that radioactive water was still escaping into the Pacific Ocean. These consistent failures are testing the patience of Japanese authorities.

“You can't just leave it [disposing of radioactive waste at the plant] up to TEPCO," Shinji Kinjo, head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) told Reuters.

"Right now,
we have an emergency."

Earlier this month, TEPCO was forced to go on the defensive after a scathing first-page article appeared in The Asahi Shimbun daily criticizing the company’s cleanup efforts.

“TEPCO did nothing for more than two years despite having pledged to seal a leaking hole between a turbine building [the leakage source] and an underground pit [a trench] in April 2011 when water contaminated with radioactive materials…was found to have leaked into the ocean; and the company only began preparing for shielding tests this summer after contaminated water was found to be leaking into the sea this time,” the newspaper stated on August 1, 2013.

TEPCO fired back with its own version of events, saying that despite “technical difficulties and a severe work environment” the company has been working to implement a plan “in order to further reduce the risk of having outflow of contaminated water beyond the trench.”

3 August 2013
A TEPCO official quoted by a Japanese media says the contaminated groundwater could reach the surface and freely flow into ocean within three weeks. To prevent a massive leakage into the Pacific it would require 100 tons of water to be pumped out daily

something TEPCO cannot achieve until the delivery of equipment at end of August.

Actually, it is more like 300+ tons of water to be pumped out daily - IF their 'estimates' are anywhere close.   :P

Where the hell is Federal Express?

Screw that, the US Military can put the equipment on MAC-HOP and deliver it overnight.

WTF is really going on here?

They act like this is all 'new' news and the 'necessary equipment' is not NOW available.

Most likely the STUPIDEST moment in Human History

To make room for more contaminated water so it won't leak into the ocean, TEPCO is dumping 11,500 metric tons of contaminated water into the ocean

Koichiro Nakamura, a deputy director general of Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), said the measure was needed to "avoid a more serious risk," without elaborating.

Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) was forced on Monday to release low-level radioactive seawater that had been used to cool overheated fuel rods after it ran out of storage capacity for more highly contaminated water.

if they did it in series with all the tanks.they could find a way to filter the radiation.maybe the heavy particles would settle out.and skim the good water.flow rate could be adjusted by adding more rows of tanks.baffles in the tanks would settle the water more.maybe permanent magnets to collect ionized particles.just some crazy theories on how it may help.

SO.

How many of you now own your own personal radiation dosimeter?
Sorry to harp on, but how many of you did provide yourselves with a method of actually detecting and proving these stories and reports for yourselves?
I'm thinking (optimistically) past fukushima and I'm thinking we need to shut them all down.

I can't (won't) go and work at fuku myself, but I can make sure that the people I know have hard information. I blogged it on FB, I told people, I gave em links, and I went beep, for a whole year. I hope some of you did something similar.

Catch em right and even the dumbest sheeple will briefly stir when you tell em that an expert says that "they could be due to die real soon". Then I say: Google "Chris Busby Fukushima".

I just wish I was better at it...

I had an old NAVY Geiger counter. Just sold it on Ebay  Too bulky and needed weird batteries. And I have a 1950's Precision Model 108 "Snooper"

But I need a good portable gieger counter for looking for radioactve rocks :D

I was going to buy one from Bob just before Fukushima but then they skyrocketed :(

I, Thor and others, one even a Nuke plant worker... spent THREE MONTHS at ATS reporting on the situation as it developed. Was up day and night  It became THE #1 thread at ATS and still is...  yet all it got me was getting banned and no one really cares

I post updates on FB from time to time but no one really cares. People using the Tsunami map as a radiation spread map because it looks 'hot'  All that does is lose credibility

SO.

How many of you now own your own personal radiation dosimeter?

That has not fit into My budget...but if I had anything to budget, I would do M'damdest to get one.

... and no one really cares

I post updates on FB from time to time but no one really cares.

It's more deer-in-headlight syndrome.  We DO care...but have ZERO idea what WE can do and so run back to the routine for comfort and forgetfulness.

FB.

I have been putting the information out since it happened.  Once I got onto facebook I started putting it out there also.  We can put the information out there but we are not responsible for making people believe it.  I wish I had more time to dig deeper for a solution to what is already happening but our own government seems to be minimizing the issue also.  We can do only what we can do and if each of us does that, it multiplies the effort.  Over at the other forum I am a member of, there close to 16,000 views on my Fukushima thread.  At the Old Open Minds the Fukushima thread was quite long with many views.  Here at Pegasus you have thor and others spreading the message.  I think a good number of us are spreading the word and that is very good.  We can't be responsible for the results of spreading the word and what others will do with the information.
From the past into the future any way I can...Educating...informing....guiding.

Funny, RSOE has only a report from July of 'possible contamination' and 'no info available'
Does anyone actually do any work over there?

I, Thor and others, one even a Nuke plant worker... spent THREE MONTHS at ATS reporting on the situation as it developed. Was up day and night  It became THE #1 thread at ATS and still is...  yet all it got me was getting banned and no one really cares

I was thinking of buying the DIY kit ones they are quite cheap.
I could assemble them & pass them on to members.

First i need a budget, and right now it's $0.00
But i hope things will pick up soon, i may even have to sell that killer laser for this good cause...

Hi Space, long time no see :)
100% with you on that one.
