Aquafina Admits It's Just Tap Water

Quote
USA Today reports Aquafina has changed its labels to specify P.W.S. — Public Water Source — under pressure from Accountability International. PepsiCo spokeswoman Michelle Naughtron called this a “reasonable thing to do” if it helped people understand that they were paying a premium to have the same water they get in their bathroom sink labeled with a serene mountain scene.

And it’s quite a premium. ConvergEx Group Chief Market Strategist Nick Colas explained consumers were flushing thousands on their favorite label of H2O in an interview with Business Insider:

“The [bottled water] industry grossed a total of $11.8 billion on those 9.7 billion gallons in 2012, making bottled water about $1.22/gallon nationwide and 300x the cost of a gallon of tap water,” Colas says. “If we take into account the fact that almost 2/3 of all bottled water sales are single 16.9oz (500 mL) bottles, though, this cost is much, much higher: about $7.50 per gallon, according to the American Water Works Association. That’s almost 2,000x the cost of a gallon of tap water and twice the cost of a gallon of regular gasoline.”
Two thousand times what we spend on tap water! You have to hand it to their marketing department, and not just Aquafina. Fiji even managed to get a brand of bottled water under military dictatorship and shipped across the world showing up with Al Gore.

Aquafina: Stop Calling Us Tap Water, We Use a Filtration System

Quote
There’s no argument that Aquafina’s water comes from the exact same source as you’re kitchen sink. That’s what the label P.W.S. on the bottle means: Public. Water. Source. Public being the key word. It’s what the company does with its water that might make it different.

In an email response to Inverse’s September story, “Aquafina Admits It’s Just Tap Water,” a PepsiCo spokesperson argued the product had been unfairly maligned.

“As stated on the label, Aquafina is purified water,” the spokesperson, who asked not to be named, writes. “It originates from public water sources and is then purified through a rigorous, seven-step purification process called Hydro-7™. That is not the “same water you get in your bathroom sink,” as you noted in your story.

Back when I was doing alarm systems, we put a system into a construction warehouse. A place where they kept all the tools and equipment, including gasoline etc...

Off on a wing that was a dirty old dark building there was a bottling machine. Outside there was an SUV with a trailer that had a huge nylon barrel marked Spring Water... it was parked there for show

This bottling machine bottled several of the local water brands. The machine was hooked up to the water mains as a feed... the water flowed into an open top "filter"

The labels said "pure mountain spring water"

The truth about bottled water

Quote
According the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website, “Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk.”

But what’s crucial to understand about this statement is that the EPA is referring to bottled water that comes from municipal sources; not all bottled water is created equal.

You see, there are two distinct kinds of bottled water: Bottled water that is repurposed municipal water and bottled water that comes from a natural spring. Bottled water coming from municipal sources is purchased from a city’s municipal supply, cleaned and bottled by manufacturers. This type of bottled water can certainly contain some contaminants, due to the fact that this tends to be “surface water.” In other words, municipal water can come from open aqueducts, reservoirs, water runoff from snow melt, or any water that is sourced from the surface of the ground.

One of those local brand names in that warehouse was Terrible Herbst...

Quote
The bottled-water bandwagon shows no signs of stopping. According to the International Bottled Water Association—yes, there is one, and yes, it is international—each of us drinks 22.6 gallons of water a year, and wholesalers sold 64 million gallons of water for $8.3 billion in 2003. The retail-sales number jumps to more than $16 billion annually.

So it's no surprise that new and unusual brands of water are popping everywhere. On the national side, PepsiCo, apparently not content with its own market dominator, Aquafina, recently introduced H2Oh under its trustworthy Quaker brand. Gatorade, the sports-drink authority, weighs in with Propel Fitness Water, a fruity flavored "Vitamin Enhanced Water Beverage." Then there's the cheekily marketed, well-packaged, yet more difficult to find Glaceau Vitaminwater. Locally, thirsty guests at the Hard Rock can buy Hard Rock Hotel and Casino water. And the Terrible Herbst company trumped competitors years ago when it started selling its own brand of bottled water at its convenience stores. The most interesting one we've seen locally is Pure Vegas, which promises profits will go to charity (available at the Ice House).

Though creative marketing and staggering profits are the main features of the bottled-water boom, most Las Vegans will say they drink fancy water because they don't trust tap water. It's a health threat, they say.

Not true, according to Southern Nevada Water Authority spokesman J.C. Davis. "Our water supply comes down from the Rocky Mountains, and we don't have a lot of potential polluters like animal farms and large cities that contaminate our supply." Davis says that of the 100 or so contaminants the federal government tests for, the majority show up as non-detects.

What we do have in our water is a lot of calcium and magnesium, which hardens our water—that's the white crusty stuff that shows up on taps and glasses just washed in the dishwasher. (Our water also has fluoride for our teeth and chlorine to kill bacteria.)

"The irony is, most bottled-water companies filter all of these things out of tap water and then add magnesium and calcium back in for flavor," Davis said. But they don't always put in chlorine, which can be harmful from a bacteriological perspective, Davis said. "When the chlorine is gone, there is nothing there to defend the water."

The source for most bottled water is the tap, and it may or may not be run through a basic filtration system. Other bottlers use some kind of osmosis or filtration system. Only bottled waters that say "spring water" on the label come from a pure source, such as an aquifer or glacier. Always check labels.

Perrier Recalls Its Water in U.S. After Benzene Is Found in Bottles

Quote
The company that made bottled mineral water chic is voluntarily recalling its entire inventory of Perrier from store shelves throughout the United States after tests showed the presence of the chemical benzene in a small sample of bottles.

The impurity was discovered in North Carolina by county officials who so prized the purity of Perrier that they used it as a standard in tests of other water supplies.

The Food and Drug Administration said it is testing supplies in California and other states. In a written statement issued last night, Ronald V. Davis, president of the Perrier Group of America Inc., said there was no significant health risk to the public. But the statement did not go into the details of the recall, how it would work, the number of bottles to be recalled and the impact on a company that has built its success on its product's image of purity and stylishness.

William M. Grigg, a spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration, said his agency's Hazard Evaluation Board had collected samples of Perrier and found no immediate risk to the public from the benzene in the water.
