Magnitude-8.2 quake strikes northern Chile
Massive quake sparks tsunami off Chile coast

Waves 6.5 feet high strike the northern coast ahead of the tsunami expected to come ashore later

The quake also shook modern buildings in nearby Peru and in Bolivia's high altitude capital of La Paz.

Hours later, tsunami warnings or watches remained in effect for the coasts of Peru and Chile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. Shortly before midnight, Chile's Emergency Office said its tsunami watch would remain in effect for six more hours, meaning hundreds of thousands of people along the coast would not sleep in their beds. Authorities in the U.S. state of Hawaii were on alert, but no tsunami watch was issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported the quake at 8.0, but later upgraded the magnitude. It said the quake struck 61 miles (99 kilometers) northwest of Iquique at 8:46 p.m., hitting a region that has been rocked by numerous quakes over the past two weeks.

..View gallery  Residents in Chile's Iquique stand in the street following a tsunami alert after a 8.0-magnitude …Psychiatrist Ricardo Yevenes said he was with a patient in Arica when the quake hit. "It quickly began to move the entire office, things were falling," he told local television. "Almost the whole city is in darkness."

The quake was so strong that the shaking experienced in Bolivia's capital about 290 miles (470 kilometers) away was the equivalent of a 4.5-magnitude tremor, authorities there said.

More than 10 strong aftershocks followed in the first few hours, including a 6.2 tremor. More aftershocks and even a larger quake could not be ruled out, said seismologist Mario Pardo at the University of Chile.

Chilean Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo said President Michelle Bachelet was closely watching the situation and was ready to take "any measures" to ensure people's safety. Hundreds of soldiers were being deployed in the quake zone, and a flight would be leaving soon with 100 special forces on board, he added.

"We have taken action to ensure public order in the case of Iquique, where we've had a massive escape of more than 300 female prisoners from the Iquique jail, so that the armed forces and police can coordinate and provide tranquility and security to the residents," he said.

.USGS reports powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake of  …. Play video  Some roads in northern Chile were blocked by landslides, causing traffic jams among people leaving the coast. But coastal residents remained calm as they head inland while waves measuring almost 2 meters (6 ½ feet) struck their cities.

Evacuations also were ordered in Peru, where waves 2 meters above normal forced about 200 people to leave the seaside town of Boca del Rio. But there were no injuries or major damage, said Col. Enrique Blanco, the regional police chief in Tacna, a Peruvian city of 300,000 near the Chilean border. "The lights went out briefly, but were re-established," Blanco said.

Chile is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries because just off the coast, the Nazca tectonic plate plunges beneath the South American plate, pushing the towering Andes cordillera to ever-higher altitudes.

The latest activity began with a strong magnitude-6.7 quake on March 16 that caused more than 100,000 people to briefly evacuate low-lying areas. Hundreds of smaller quakes followed in the weeks since, keeping people on edge as scientists said there was no way to tell if the unusual string of tremors was a harbinger of an impending disaster.

The last recorded big quake to hit far northern Chile around Iquique was a devastating magnitude-8.3 in 1877. It unleashed a 24-meter-high (nearly 80-foot-high) tsunami, causing major damage along the Chile-Peru coast and fatalities as far away as Hawaii and Japan.

..View gallery  8.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Chile; Tsunami Strikes Coast (ABC News)A magnitude-8.8 quake and ensuing tsunami in central Chile in 2010 killed more than 500 people, destroyed 220,000 homes, and washed away docks, riverfronts and seaside resorts. That quake released so much energy it actually it shortened the Earth's day by a fraction of a second by changing the planet's rotation.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded on Earth also happened in Chile — a magnitude-9.5 tremor in 1960 that killed more than 5,000 people.

Chile is the world's leading copper producing nation, and most of its mining industry is in the northern regions. Top mining companies said there was no serious damage to their operations so far

Panama quake revised to 5.8, no report of damage, injuries

 1 hr ago |By Reuters

WASHINGTON, April 2 (Reuters) - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 hit Panama on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake came a day after Chile was shaken by an 8.2 magnitude quake that killed six people and set off a tsunami with 7-foot (2-meter) waves.

The Panama quake was centered about 38 miles (61 km) south of David, Panama, at a depth of 17.3 miles (28 km). The USGS originally reported the magnitude at 6.2 and depth at 6.2 miles (10 km).

Panama's head of emergency services, Arturo Alvarado, said there were no reports of damage or injuries but that schools and homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution. A USGS tweet said it had received citizens' reports of light and moderate shaking.

Magnitude 7.3 quake hits near Papua New Guinea: USGS
 4 hr ago |By Reuters

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 was recorded off Papua New Guinea's remote Bougainville Island, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said a destructive widespread tsunami was not expected but said waves could be generated along coasts in the area from an earthquake of that magnitude.

Related: Strong 6.1 quake shakes Nicaragua, no major damage

"This is a highly active area seismically," said Chris McKee, the assistant director at the Port Moresby Geophysical Observatory in the Papua New Guinea capital. "The population is strung out along the coast in a number of centers, but it's not densely populated."

The quake was initially measured at 7.4 but was later revised down to 7.3. It was centered in the sea about 75 km (45 miles) southwest of the town of Arawa on Bougainville, at a depth of about 50 km (30 miles), the USGS said.

In 1998, a magnitude 7 earthquake triggered a tsunami that smashed into villages near Aitape on Papua New Guinea's north coast and killed more than 2,000 people.

Resource-rich Bougainville, which neighbors the Solomon Islands, fought for a bloody war for independence from Papua New Guinea in the 1990s, leading to the closure of the Panguna copper mine, majority-owned by Rio Tinto Ltd

Residents in Bougainville's second-largest town of Buka and Gizo in the north of the Solomon Islands reported feeling tremors but said there was no immediate signs of any damage.

Strong 6.1 quake shakes Nicaragua, no major damage
12 hr ago |By Ivan Castro of Reuters

MANAGUA, April 10 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake shook western Nicaragua on Thursday, knocking out power and phone lines in some areas of the capital Managua, a Reuters witness said, but there were no reports of fatalities or major damage.

The quake had a magnitude of 6.1, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and was very shallow at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 km). It was previously reported as having various magnitudes ranging up to 6.4.

Some residents in Managua rushed out into the streets, clearly nervous.

"There are no injuries, no loss of life so far, nor even any significant material losses," Nicaraguan government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo said on local radio, adding that the government was checking reports that two dozen homes had suffered some damage.

The earthquake struck at 2327 GMT, 19 miles (31 km) northeast of the town of Nagarote or 31 miles (50 km) north-northwest of the capital Managua, USGS added.

The Reuters witness said the quake was followed by aftershocks.

A magnitude 6.1 quake is capable of causing severe damage.

New, Bigger Earthquake Rattles Nicaragua's Capital

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Nicaragua on Friday, just a day after a less powerful quake hit the same area, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake Friday was centered deep underground – about 86 miles down – so damage was expected to be light, USGS geophysicist John Bellinis said. But people in Managua, about 35 miles northwest of the epicenter, and towns that were nearer to the center ran into the streets in panic, The Associated Press reported.

The quake was felt in neighboring Costa Rica and El Salvador, Reuters reported.

The quake on Thursday, measuring 6.1 and centered northwest of Managua at a depth of about six miles, injured scores of people, according to Nicaraguan officials. One person was reported to have died of a heart attack. Hundreds of aftershocks were reported.

Nicaragua has a long history of earthquakes. A 6.2 quake in 1972 destroyed much of Managua and left between 3,000 and 7,000 dead – many victims were left entombed when authorities leveled the worst-hit areas into mass graves, according to a history on the USGS website.

Magnitude 7.6 quake hits near Solomon Islands, generates tsunami warning

April 13 (Reuters) - A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands on Sunday morning with enough force to generate a tsunami warning for the immediate surrounding area, according to U.S. government agencies.

A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. An earlier tsunami watch for Fiji, Australia, Indonesia and nearby areas was cancelled after the earthquake was revised down from its original magnitude of 8.3.

While a magnitude 7.0 earthquake is capable of causing widespread destruction, there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake was 60 miles (100 km) south of Kira Kira in the Solomon Islands at a depth of 18 miles (29 km), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. (Reporting by Lisa Shumaker in Chicago; Editing by David Gregorio)

Peru's Ubinas Volcano Erupts
By Becky Oskin, Senior Writer   |   April 17, 2014 12:54pm ET

One of Peru's most active volcanoes, Ubinas, erupted a massive ash cloud Tuesday (April 15), prompting an evacuation of Querapi near the volcano because of falling ash starting today. The government declared a state of emergency in nearby provinces, which will provide financial assistance for those affected by the eruption, Notimérica reported.

The estimated 14,750-foot-tall (4,500 meters) ash cloud is the latest in an ongoing series of small eruptions at Ubinas, according to INGEMMET, the national geologic, mining and metallurgical institute. The volcano's activity increased this week, with several small to moderate explosions and ash clouds since Sunday, the agency said in a statement.

Ubinas is about 470 miles (756 kilometers) southeast of the capital of Lima. A major eruption in 2006 forced the evacuation of thousands of nearby residents and killed livestock that ate ash-coated grass.

Powerful 7.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes in Mexico
4 hours ago

A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico Friday morning, shaking buildings across a large swath of the country, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake struck around 9:28 a.m. local time (10:28 a.m. ET), 39 kilometers east of Petatlan, Mexico, in the southwestern state of Guerrero, north of the resort city Acapulco, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It initially registered as a 7.5-magnitude, but the USGS later revised it down to 7.2.

It was strong enough to shake central and southern Mexico, the Associated Press reported. Shaking was reported for at least 30 seconds in Mexico City, where buildings swayed and people ran out of high-rises, the AP said.

There was no word of injuries. Luis Felipe Puente, Mexico's national coordinator of civil protection, tweeted Friday, "At the moment no reports of damages from quake." Mexican Secretary of the Interior Miguel Angel Osorio Chong also tweeted that there wasn't any damage, and that quake protocols were underway.

The earthquake hit on Good Friday, a day of prayer when few people go to work because most businesses in Mexico are closed for the holiday.

A hotel manager in Acapulco told NBC News he hadn't found any major structural damage after the shaking.

There was a "major shift" felt at the Acapulco Princess and the Pierre Marques hotels, Thomas Becker said, but the 3,000 guests staying at the two properties were fine.

A 7.4-magnitude quake hit the same area in 2012, killing two people and damaging or destroying 30,000 homes.

In 1985, a magnitude-8.1 quake killed at least 6,000 people and destroyed buildings in Mexico City. That temblor was centered 250 miles away on the Pacific Coast, and prompted Mexico City to reinforce its buildings to withstand earthquakes.

Mexico residents posted photos and videos of Friday's quake on social media:

NBC's Erika Angulo, NBC's Melinda Ryan, and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Strong quake shakes Mexico
Mexico City (AFP) - A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook southern Mexico and the nation's capital early Saturday, prompting people to flee into the streets in the dead of night two days after a similar temblor.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the quake, which struck as people slept at 2:36 am (0736 GMT).

The US Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes worldwide, said the epicenter was seven kilometers (four miles) west of Tecpan de Galeana in the southern state of Guerrero, with a depth of 35 kilometers.

Mexico's National Seismology Service had measured it at 6.3 and later revised it down to 5.9, closer to the USGS's assessment.

"The states of Guerrero, Morelos, Oaxaca and the Federal District (Mexico City) have not reported any damage," said national civil protection coordinator Luis Felipe Puente.

The earthquake rattled people out of their sleep and tormented those awake at bars.

"It felt horrible. I almost fell and I haven't even had much to drink," said Adriana Mendoza, a 21-year-old outside a bar in downtown Mexico City that was not evacuated.

A 6.4-magnitude quake hit the country on Thursday, centered 15 kilometers from Tecpan de Galeana, causing a bridge to collapse in Guerrero but sparing the country from major damage or injuries.

The new temblor came three weeks after a powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook the capital and the Pacific resort of Acapulco on April 18, causing panic but no major damage.

Mexico City is sensitive to distant earthquakes because it was built over soft soil from a drained lake that magnifies their effect.

In 1985, thousands of people were killed in the capital when buildings collapsed after an 8.1-magnitude temblor struck the Pacific coast.

(CNN) -- A 6.4 magnitude earthquake shook southern Mexico's Guerrero state Thursday, less than a month after a stronger temblor hit the area, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Thursday's quake, centered about 60 miles northwest of Acapulco and 172 miles southwest of Mexico City, happened at noon local time (1 p.m. ET), the USGS said.

No reports of major damage were immediately made. All city services in Mexico City were working normally after the quake, Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera told CNN affiliate Foro TV.

The USGS preliminarily said the quake's magnitude was 6.8, but lowered the number in the afternoon.

On April 18, a major quake -- 7.2. magnitude -- hit the same state, but there were no reports of major damage that day.
