Check this out:

"TOKYO—Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) announced plans to help meat producer groups recall and destroy beef tainted with radioactive cesium from the marketplace. As reported by the Japan Times, the government also instructed the producers to seek compensation from Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO).

The government will financially support the purchase, storage and incineration of meat from cattle fed hay contaminated with radioactive cesium grown in the area near the nuclear-damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant, which may cost as much as 2 billion yen ($25 million), said Hideo Harada, MAFF director for livestock policy planning.

On July 19, Japanese officials imposed a ban on all beef shipments from the Fukushima Prefecture amid concerns the cattle may have been fed contaminated hay. The government estimated 2,906 cattle ate tainted feed before shipment.

Japan’s Food Safety Minister Goshi Hosono said beef from cattle fed with tainted hay was shipped to 46 out of Japan's total 47 prefectures. Test results showed 23 out of 274 beef samples contained radioactive cesium that exceeded the government's standard.

The recalled beef will be stored and tested and could be shipped to the market again if cesium levels don't exceed standards."   :P

Please note that 'harmless' levels of radiation for the US were based on 96 hour or 4-5 days of emissions. Here is proof they were modeling for releases that were ongoing...up to and likely beyond the month of April, 2011.

The SFP #4 fire is the model from the 15th of March, 2011.

1,108 days that the Jet Stream has been delivering Fukushima life-altering radioactive fallout to the Northern Hemisphere.

This is a live link to today's Jet Stream. Take a good look and think about all of the rain and snow this winter that has precipitated radionuclides on the wheat, corn and other foodstuffs in the fields, the grapes in Napa Valley, the snow at the ski resorts, the water in the rivers, lakes, streams, your children, your pets...:P

The one word that you will never find in the mainstream media is FALLOUT.

Concern about radiation particles being carried across the Pacific and into the western US from Japan has become a serious topic, at least with Spacemaverick.

However, One might think that NONE of the sheeple are aware of the situation; therefore, cannot have an informed point of view on the dire consequences of 1,108 days of fallout from the triple melt-throughs at Fukushima.

Despite assurances by the EPA that radiation amounts would be very low by the time any of it reached the West Coast in the early days of the disaster, the flow in the upper levels of the atmosphere today is setting up to bring whatever is being emitted over Japan during the course of the next week, directly towards the West Coast, as it has for over the past three years.   :P

Jet Stream Fukushima Fallout Express 19 March 2011

Any questions? One-thousand, one-hundred and eight days...it keeps on coming.   :P

In the short term, most of the radiation that is already in the atmosphere will be carried over the Aleutian Islands of western Alaska. The rest of Alaska should be missed, as the flow abruptly turns to the southeast across the Gulf of Alaska and gets involved in the Low pressure center that is sitting just off the West Coast.

And let's not forget about the dangerous low pressure (960 as of this writing) sitting off the East Coast. That would be a Cat 5 hurricane profile.   :P

Yummmmm. Fresh fallout from Fukushima in Alaska and California.

Random comments from the interweb regarding the continued Canadian government cover-up of radiation testing.

Joseph DeMare • 8 days ago
Actually, testing right after the disaster then stopping was probably a very deliberate act of deception.

It takes time for some radiation to build up in the ecosystem. Fukushima has been dumping radiation into the ocean for three years now. Levels of many radioactive isotopes are probably building up, getting MORE radioactive than they were two years ago. The govt probably knew that would happen and does not want to find the radiation, no matter what the cost in terms of the health of Canadians.

Take a look at the following comment by Jeff Gauch. These are the robot-like shills to watch out for, as they frequent any Deny Nuclear site with their inane vitriolic balderdash, calling people names and swearing to make their 'point.'   :P

They set up a strawman argument based upon lie after lie and most of the time. they get little rebuttal. Luckily however, there are a few informed internauts out there like Joseph DeMare who are not afraid to step up to the plate and deliver a home run based on facts, which , by definition, are the truth.

Jeff Gauch > CircaShian • 4 days ago
Christ, this is like the nuclear power version of the Jabberwoky. All the sounds are right, but they're totally devoid of meaning.

Three cores did not melt outside of the containment vessel.

Three cores have melted down, but they are all contained (there may have been a gas release from one in the early days of the accident). The release to the environment was due to the spent fuel being kept on site. When the site lost power the storage pools steamed off, uncovering the fuel, allowing it to overheat, which damaged it and allowed the release of fission products into the environment (hence a level 7 accident).

Now that the spent fuel is covered and the reactors are in cold shutdown, the release to the environment has ended. There are still issues with the previously released material migrating in the environment, but the effects are non-existent.

Maybe you should look at Dr. Buessler's research: forumonenergy DOT com/2013/11/07/ken-buesseler-fukushimas-effects-on-the-ocean/

Major take-aways: The oceans off the coast of Japan are now well below the limits for US drinking water, much less the Japanese limits for release. All of the Japanese fisheries except for the ones immediately off shore of Fukushima province show levels well below the Japanese limits.

The ignorant fear-mongering you and your fellow idiots are engaged in is producing stress that is far more dangerous than any conceivable radiation exposure from this accident.

OK, Jeff, please consider this: The Fukushima Fearmongers

And this:

Fukushima Meltdowns: A Global Conspiracy of Denial | Global Research

Does anyone in authority anywhere tell the truth about Fukushima?

If there is any government or non-government authority in the world that is addressing the disaster at Fukushima openly, directly, honestly, and effectively, it’s not apparent to the outside observer what entity that might be.

There is instead an apparent global conspiracy of authorities of all sorts to deny to the public reliably accurate, comprehensible, independently verifiable (where possible), and comprehensive information about not only the condition of the Fukushima power plant itself and its surrounding communities, but about the unceasing, uncontrolled release of radioactive debris into the air and water, creating a constantly increasing risk of growing harm to the global community.

[...]

There is no moral excuse for this international collusion. The excuses are political or economic or social, but none of them excuses any authority for withholding or lying about information that has potentially universal and destructive impact on everyone alive today and
everyone to be born for some unknown generations.

[...]

Reassurances about Fukushima are as misleading as scare stories
The reassuring aspects of the condition of Unit #3 – radioactive releases are not new, they’re less intense than they once were, the nuclear waste is cooling – while true enough, provide only a false sense of comfort.

Also true: radiation is released almost continuously, the releases are uncontrolled, no one seems to be measuring the releases, no one seems to be tracking the releases, no one is assessing accumulation of the releases.

And while it’s true that the waste is cooling and decaying, it’s also true that a loss of coolant could lead to another uncontrolled chain reaction. (“Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3 is not going to explode,” says Gunderson in a headline, but he can’t know that with certainty.)

For the near future, what all that means, in effect, is that the world has to accept chronic radiation releases from Fukushima as the price for avoiding another catastrophic release. And even then, it’s not a sure thing.

But there’s another aspect of Fukushima Unit #3 that’s even less reassuring. Unit #3 is the one Fukushima reactor that was running on Mixed oxide fuel, or MOX fuel, in its fuel rods. MOX fuel typically uses Plutonium mixed with one or more forms of Uranium.

Using Plutonium in fuel rods adds to their toxicity in the event of a meltdown. In part because Plutonium-239 has a half-life of 240,000 years and can be used to make nuclear weapons of “dirty bombs,” its use in commercial reactors remains both limited and controversial. Because it contains Plutonium, MOX fuel is more toxic than other nuclear fuel and will burn at lower temperatures.

As Natural Resources News Service reported in 2011:

“The mixed oxide fuel rods used in the compromised number three reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi complex contain enough plutonium to threaten public health with the possibility of inhalation of airborne plutonium particles…. Plutonium is at its most dangerous when it is inhaled and gets into the lungs. The effect on the human body is to vastly increase the chance of developing fatal cancers.”

Reportedly, TEPCO plans don’t call for the removal of the MOX fuel in Unit #3 for another decade or more. Fuel removal from Units #1, #2, and #3 is complicated by lethal radiation levels at all three reactors, as well as TEPCO’s inability so far to locate the three melted cores with any precision.

There is ample reason to hope that Fukushima, despite the complex of uncontrollable and deteriorating factors, will not get worse, because even the Japanese don’t want that. But there is little reason to expect anything but  worsening conditions, slowly or suddenly, for years and years to come.

And there is even less reason to expect anyone in authority anywhere to be more than minimally and belatedly truthful about an industry they continue to protect, no matter how many people it damages or kills.

The perfect paradigm of that ruthlessly cynical nuclear mentality is the current Japanese practice of recruiting homeless people to work at Fukushima in high level radiation areas where someone with something to lose might not be willing to go for minimum wage.

Joseph DeMare > Jeff Gauch • 3 days ago
There you go again. Spewing lies and insults, kind of the way Fukushima is spewing radiation into the environment. So there's no fissioning going on, except the fissioning that's going on, producing the waste heat that can make the core molten again and restart the whole process.

Boric acid is great at absorbing neutrons when you've got nice, intact fuel rods standing up with lots of space between them as in a functioning reactor. When you've got a huge glob of melted fuel rods on or under the bottom of your reactor, it's a different story. No one can predict exactly what's happening in that mass. There have been several times when there were surges in heat from the "cold shutdown."

Your melted control rods are not evenly distributed through the mass, there will be areas with uneven distributions of neutrons. The Plutonium in reactor 4 reacts much more easily than the Uranium you worked with.

(By the way boric acid is also great at eating holes in reactor heads, ?as it did at the Davis-Besse Reactor on the south shore of Lake Erie.)

But the lies you are telling go deeper and longer than this thread. Back when Three Mile Island happened, you pro nukers maintained for many years that there had been no melt down.

You lied.
Back at the beginning of this technology, we were promised clean, safe, cheap, energy.
Turns out it's the dirtiest, most dangerous, and most expensive energy ever devised.
You promised that nuclear plants could never explode, "like a nuclear bomb." The whole world saw the mushroom cloud over reactor 4. That explosion lifted parts of the building hundreds of feet in the air and shook observers on a mountaintop ten miles away. It was a nuclear explosion.

You lied.

(I agree, the first two explosions were hydrogen explosions, short, sharp explosions where you could even see a wisp of steam afterwards, but the third explosion in the reactor that had MOX fuel was nuclear).

For decades you maintained that there were so many safeguards in nuclear plants that they COULD NOT melt down!

You lied.

It was also clear from the coordinated media response to Fukushima that you pro nukers knew you were lying all along and were well prepared for the inevitable day when a plant melted down. For fifty years, you've claimed that we have a solution to the problem of nuclear waste.

You are lying.

Every nuclear plant is a potential Fukushima. Those years you spent working for the nuclear industry you were generating tons of radioactive pollution that will be killing, maiming, and sickening our descendants for thousands of years.

But your contempt for anyone who questions the legitimacy or morality of what you are doing is painfully clear whenever you insult or curse your opponents.

It is time for your ]industry to die. BEFORE we have another melt down.

CircaShian > Jeff Gauch • 4 days ago
When people dismiss the effects of Cesium-137 by comparing it to the radioactive Potassium-40 in a banana, they fail to account for the strength of the radioactivity.

It is like saying a single stick of dynamite and the bomb dropped at Hiroshima amount to the same thing.

Potassium-40 = 71 ten millionths Curies per gram
Cesium-137 = 88 Curies per gram
Strontium-90 = 140 Curies per gram

So the effects of Cesium-137 are about 10 million times more radioactive than Potassium-40.

Foreign reporters find radiation levels over 100 times legal limit off Fukushima

Arirang News  Mar. 7, 2014 (at 2:00 in): [...] exclusive coverage by the Joongang Ilbo on Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The headline reads, “Where Abe Said Contaminated Water Was Contained, Radiation Detector Goes Off “Beep, Beep, Beep.”

[...] the radiation detector showed a reading that was 110 times higher than the normal rate. Surprising,.. given that this area is within the zone that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had claimed was SAFE from the effects of radiation.

Three years since the nuclear disaster,.. and still periodic reports of contaminated water leakage.

It’s about time the Japanese government and the rest of world deserve an honest assessment of the disaster.

Kim Hyun-ki, a Tokyo correspondent for the JoongAng Ilbo, takes off his mask and poses for a photo on Feb. 23 after approaching the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant via boat. When reporters approached the tetrapods of the levee near the port, a Geiger counter indicated that radiation levels were 110 times more than permissible standards. The plant’s No. 3 reactor, which suffered a hydrogen explosion three years ago, is seen behind. (By Seo Seung-wook)

Korea JoongAng Daily  Mar. 17, 2014: The accident was a worst-case scenario come to life, one that stunned the international community and shed light on the vulnerabilities of the nuclear industry. [...]

When a team of JoongAng Ilbo and JTBC reporters visited the Fukushima site last month to witness for themselves the state of the plant 36 months later, their boat came just within 100 meters (328 feet) of its port before a deep sense of dread set in.
The reporters believed they would be safer from radiation exposure in the open sea [...]
It is estimated that hundreds of tons of contaminated groundwater spill into the ocean each day. [...]

The tension was palpable, and the group members immediately put on their anti-radiation suits and masks. [...]

The upper part of the outer wall that covers the [No. 3] reactor was crumbling [...]
the team finally worked up enough courage to come closer to the port [...]

The interval of the beeps rapidly increased when the boat passed alongside one of the levees, signaling danger. “Stop, don’t go any closer!” one of those on board shouted.

The detector sounded relentlessly, indicating a radiation level of 21 microsieverts, about 110 times the permissible level of exposure. [...]

As the team moved another 200 meters east, they could see that the port was not fully closed off, and a 50-meter-wide opening let water freely escape. [...]

“The ocean in front of the Daiichi power plant was once one of the richest fisheries in Fukushima Prefecture,” [Yoshio Yoshida, the boat’s 61-year-old captain] added,

“but we can’t do anything about it because the spillover
of groundwater [mixed with the contaminated water]
isn’t going to end in a year or two –
it may last until the end of the Earth.

Other recent reports state radiation levels at the plant boundaries are 8 times the limit.

RT News  Mar. 28, 2014: In mid-January, TEPCO warned that nuclear radiation at the boundaries of the damaged power plant had jumped to eight times the government safety guideline.

The Nuclear Attacks on Mari Takenouchi: Free Information, Health and Safety in today Japan

I am appealing to all of you, students, activists, bloggers, podcasters, journalists, lawyers, doctors, stand up to help denounce and expose those pro-nuclear agents' illegal permanent harassment of Mari Takenouchi.

A Fukushima evacuee, single mother, Mari Takenouchi became an full-time independent journalist after 311, a beacon in the night calling attention to the plight of the Fukushima children, of the Fukushima evacuees and non-evacuees, calling for the protection and evacuation of the Fukushima Children.

She needs OUR HELP. She is now under observation by some nuclear offices and agents, virtual and in real life. Those pro-nuclear agents are constantly harassing her, pressuring her, intimidating her, in their will to silence her.

We can make them stop, if we all denounce those illegal acts, on our blogs, podcasts, websites articles, bringing maximum exposure to their harassment, those pro-nukers will realize that their actions are counter-productive, that more they pressure her to silence her, more they will be bring attention to her cause worldwide and more international support for Mari Takenouchi, then they will have to reconsider and stop.

Due to the present Japanese Government politics and their recent State Secrecy Law, somehow most the Japanese people are presently scared to support her, to become involved and implicated.

It belong to us, the foreign No Nukes activists to bring her our full and loud support, that is the least we can do for a lady who  has been courageously opposing and denouncing the activities of Nuclear lobby Ethos Project in Fukushima.

Mari needs our help, let's not abandon this lady to fight those crooks alone.

Thank you in advance for you future given support to Mari.

BACKGROUND:

IAEA, CEPN, EDF, COGÉMA, ARÉVA and IRSN bully Mari Takenouchi and Yury Bandazhevsky and sacrifice Japan and Belarus

Mari Takenouchi, a Japanese journalist is under criminal accusation by Fukushima ETHOS leaders – who work FOR the nuclear holocaust industry, AGAINST people, but fake it as humanitarian aid.

“ETHOS and CORE, who must take their share of the responsibility.

(Translator’s note: CEPN is the Centre d’étude sur l’Evaluation de la Protection dans le domaine Nucléaire; Mutadis, ETHOS and CORE are all offshoots of the French nuclear industry, financed either through Electricité de France or the Autorité de Sureté Nucléaire.)

The same fate awaits the Japanese people and their children living in areas contaminated by the Fukushima disaster because the same strategy is being put in place in Japan with the same players, the same pseudo-scientific justifications and under the aegis of the same authorities.”

Please keep sharing though I got unindicted.

“How could a single tweet land Takenouchi in Jail?”

"Suspended" Indictment

Published on Friday 30 May 2014

Reporters Without Borders takes note of prosecutor Eiji Masuhara’s decision to suspend “criminal contempt” proceedings against freelance journalist Mari Takenouchi in connection with her coverage of the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

The proceedings were initiated as a result of a complaint by Ryoko Ando, the head of an organization called Ethos, after Takenouchi tweeted that its efforts to get people to return to live in contaminated areas were an “experiment on human beings.”

“The decision to suspend the proceedings against the journalist Mari Takenouchi is obviously encouraging, but we persist in calling on the authorities to abandon them altogether and not just suspend them,” Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Christophe Deloire said.

The prosecutor urged Takenouchi to continue her work and even wished her “good luck” with it.

Takenouchi told Reporters Without Borders that her goal now was to “save the children living in contaminated areas and suffering from thyroid cancer.”

IAEA, CEPN, EDF, COGÉMA, ARÉVA and IRSN bully Mari Takenouchi and Yury Bandazhevsky and sacrifice Japan and Belarus

May 20, 2014 by Mikkai

IAEA, CEPN, EDF, COGÉMA, ARÉVA , IRSN and SAGE bully and threat Mari Takenouchi and Yury Bandazhevsky and sacrifice Japan and Belarus.

The Aim: Irradiated agriculture and forcing irradiated food products on people and the total avoidance of evacuation.

The Victims: All.

And the brave. The parents. The journalists. The independent experts. With little money, with little labs. But all the evidences, the world needs.

Here is the story JAPAN (TEPCO irradiated) and BELARUS (Chernobyl irradiated) share.

In Belarus, shortly after the explosions, the life-time dose was increased to 350 mSv.

In Japan, shortly after the explosions the yearly / annual dose was increased to 20 mSv.

Why?

To avoid evacuation.

And: To use the people as guinea pigs (Effect of “low” doses / Internal Emitters on Body and DNA).

In Belarus a FAKE AID program was used to do all this: ETHOS – later the “successor” CORE.

In Japan the same FAKE AID program was used: ETHOS and later CORE.

-> Force the people to live in irradiated areas <-

Responsible for these programs: IAEA, CEPN, EDF, COGÉMA, ARÉVA and IRSN (more below).

Current Situation in Japan about CORE (pro-nuclear link):
Radiation Protection Culture at School - Lessons from the ETHOS and CORE Projects in Belarus - CEPN

The prominent victims:

Belarus: Yury Bandazhevsky

Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky – as a member of a committee of experts at the request of the Belarusian authorities – was publicly denounced after he critisized a financial report.

He said the mostly useless studies were financed with money from the IAEA / WHO, UNICEF and the United Kingdom and Germany. Large sums which were intended for the victims of Chernobyl flowed into nonsensical studies such as “Smoking is harmful to health”.

Also: “For the nuclear lobby, any research indicating harm from ionising radiation represents a commercial threat that must at all costs be averted. Research on damage to the human genome (one of the most serious consequences of the contamination) was not part of the international project requested of the WHO in 1991 by the health ministers of Ukraine, Belarus and the Russian Federation.

Yet dental caries was made a research priority. And although these countries had addressed their research request to the WHO, it was the IAEA which planned the project.”

Prof. Dr. med. Edmund Lengfelder is a board member of the The Otto Hug Radiation Institute, Munich (http://www.oh-strahlen.org/) and member of German Association for Chernobyl Help (http://www.dvth.de/ / no longer active) but members of the DVTH were (or are) also members of the right-wing psych sect VPM Association for the Advancement of Psychological knowledge of human (german: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verein_zur_F%C3%B6rderung_der_Psychologischen_Menschenkenntnis).

Lengfelder initiated several Chernobyl conferences, the 2006 Congress was postponed several times because of the VPM scandal. I myself destroyed many many handouts during the Belarusian-German Meeting in Germany, Geseke, 2006. Meanwhile Lengfelder occurs hardly appeared in public. What about his health is unknown.

But what it important: Lengfelder met the independent belarusian Prof. Yuri Bandazhevsky shortly before Bandazhevsky was arrested by belarusian authorities. The European Parliament awarded a Freedom Pass for Bandazhevsky, Amnesty International speaks of Silencing Academia. Lengfelder designated Bandazhevsky as criminal. Lengfelder is a good friend of belarusian dictator Lukashenko.

Luckily Bandazhevsky was released and fled the country. He lost his institute in Gomel, Belarus (one of the most Chernobyl irradiated areas). But he continues to work for true science, radiation, and the children: here

One of his works and NOW IMPORTANT FOR JAPAN and EVERYONE:

Cesium directly harms the hearts of our children:

MODIFICATIONS IN CARDIAC-VASCULAR SYSTEM OF CHILDREN, LIVING IN CONTAMINATED WITH RADIOISOTOPES: http://chernobyl-today.org/images/stories/Bandajevski_2001_Radiocaesium_and_heart.pdf

We can rightly consider the Cesium-137 in relatively small doses (20-30 Bq/kg); a breach of the regulatory processes in the body: PAGE 2 – 3: http://chernobyl-today.org/images/stories/BANDAJEVSKI_UNSCEAR_-_REUTERS_Sept_22nd_2010_Eng_V2.pdf

He was able to salvage something from his work, to him we owe valuable information like this: “The friends of Yury Bandajevski”, French Association

One of Solange Fernex‘s major present concerns is the consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe, especially as to how the heightened background radiation affects the human genome.

In a speech she made in Kiev this year, she brought to the public’s attention the inbred scientific collusion between the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Agency for Atomic Energy (IAAE) – a complot that seeks to portray the nuclear industry as being Chernobyl’s only real victim.

During her speech she also made public the plight of Professor Yuri I. Bandazhevsky, Rector of the Medical Institute in Gomel, whose scientific research on Chernobyl children contradicted UNSCEAR‘s findings: “No increase in birth defects, congenital malformations, stillbirths, or premature births could be linked to radiation exposure caused by the accident.”

When she had visited his institute, he had shown her a collection of fetal and stillborn anomalies collected over the course of 2 weeks — a number normally found over a year’s duration.

Professor Bandazhevsky had been planning to present his findings to a parliamentary delegation from Minsk.

Instead Bandazhevsky was arrested and, on 18 June 2001, was sentenced to 8 years in a gulag. Solange Fernex appeals: “The times when Galileo Galilei was persecuted by the Holy Inquisition for his scientific findings should be past. The truth on the health consequences of Chernobyl cannot be concealed, as this was possible, centuries ago, for the movements of the earth around the sun. Science must cease to be silenced by the economic interests of the promoters of nuclear energy.”

This is one of the reasons why real science is suppressed and not recognized.

“How could a single tweet land Takenouchi in Jail?”

We assume that FREEDOM of the PRESS is universal...  it's not

Press freedom in Japan is constitutionally guaranteed and generally respected in practice. However...

Concerns regarding the lack of diversity and independence in reporting are rooted in Japan’s kisha kurabu, or press clubs. Through the press clubs, major media outlets maintain cozy relationships with bureaucrats and politicians, resulting in an arrangement under which journalists are granted access in exchange for refraining for writing critical stories. The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and the resulting disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, magnified this problem. Members of kisha kurabu were among the few journalists admitted to official press conferences, and admission was often granted in exchange for foregoing tough questions regarding the disasters. Additionally, freelance journalists and foreign and online media were excluded from reporting on the nuclear threat and were not allowed into official press conferences. In March 2011, freelance journalist and author Takashi Uesugi was removed from his weekly guest slot on the local TBS radio station because of his regular criticism of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which runs the nuclear plant. Following the catastrophe, a group of independent journalists who were fed up with the system launched the Free Press Association of Japan. It remains to be seen if this group will have any influence.

There were accusations of official censorship in the aftermath of the disaster, but the Japanese government denied that it had attempted to withhold negative information. Self-censorship remains a problem in Japan and was further highlighted after the disaster, as many reporters did not question TEPCO about the radiation leaks until two weeks later. The disaster also highlighted the amount of influence TEPCO has in Japan’s advertising industry. TEPCO reportedly spends $120 million annually on advertising, a factor that contributed to the media’s conservative reporting on the company. In mid-2011, press freedom groups voiced concern that the government might take control of TEPCO, but the organization maintained its independence through the year.
