Thankfully, Irma is just about done  8) As luck would have it, Irma did make landfall and traveled over land instead of on the warm waters of the Gulf, which helped to degrade it quickly

As an added plus, the temperature here in north Georgia today was between 58-60 degrees all day, which helped block most of the strong winds from reaching ground level

Florida was battered, but all in all, the extent of damage was far less than what was expected; hopefully hoss58, littleenki, spacemaverick, and Thor came thru in good shape

That's good news.

CNN tried their best to make it worse than it was!  Still lots of clean up and power lines to fix in Fla.

Well, we made it through Irma with only a downed fence.  We were without power for maybe a day in our neighborhood.  Others had it much worse in our area.  Kudos to all those (to include linemen) that are putting our infrastructure back together.  Linemen from all over the USA coming in to help.  Our trains are running again.  Food shelves slowly being replenished. Watching businesses giving away food to help those who have nothing now.  It gives me hope watching Americans helping Americans no matter the ethnic origin.  The American spirit still lives in the majority of the people.

Glad to hear that, mav  8) after seeing the footage from key west...

Powers back on...a testament to preparation...

1: watch the models closely and dont let the mass media hype make your decisions for you.

2: as soon as the possibility of a hit exists, however early it might seem..prepare first aid and triage plans, get fuel(propane/gasoline/diesel), and prepare for power outages by finding a generator, or if you have one..take it out fire it up and run it for a while..get ample ext cords prepared and in place so you dont stumble around in the dark.

3:Separate food items into what you want and what you can throw away beforehand, so your time keeping coolers open and such is minimal.

4:Have Ice if you must..but the best thing is a icemaker run off a small generator or solar/battery setup.

5: If you have a pool, shock it beforehand, and make sure to clean out all debris as soon as the storm passes, to prevent it from blooming with algae..shock it every other day and use the water if you need it for bathing and flushing toilets.

6: Park vehicles where they will be able to get out if trees fall in the way of the usual parking spot, clear all loose items from your yard, and also your neighbors yards if they dont or cant.

7: Keep a fogger or lots of off handy

8: have a firearm nearby at all times, and always lock your doors when you go in and out..watch your neighborhood closely and dont drop your guard

9:alert friends and family asap afterwards you are ok, they will be worried and may not be able to reach you through normal channels for a while.

10: Dont be afraid to sit in the car with a/c, but make sure it is in a well ventilated parking area, away from walls or landscaping that can trap fumes.

Theres more Im sure, but these are my keypoints, and theyve worked well for us more than a few times.

All we had was some fence damage and some landscaping damage, no power for 6 days, but we lived in my motorhome next to the house for the week)120 gallon fuel tank and 6000 watt generator.. and had wifi thanks to t-mobiles lte hotspot the entire time..we used the rv refrig to save the meats and more important foods...we still have 50 gallons in the motorhome, 12 gallons in fuel jugs, and two cars and a van full of fuel, so we couldve went for a while longer..it pays to be ready...and it hurts to take your safety and comfort for granted.

The front that hung over Tampa for most of Irmas run saved the west coast, Im glad to hear everyone is ok with minor issues, it seems to be the case around here in the Tampa area.

If that front hadnt pulled northward when it did, Irma wouldve skirted the west coast of Fla and then went straight up into Alabama and the panhandle as a cat 3-4 which wouldve been catastrophic for the eastern gulf beaches...

I used all the maps and info from the nhc as a guide, and avoided the tv media 100 percent, and was able to predict exactly where she would go once it was on the Key West 248 nm radar.

Slightly East of Key West, up through the everglades, through Arcadia and Lakeland, skirting Orlando and up through Leon county..spot on.

Also using windyty.com and flhurricane.com I was able to get animated model runs and concise commentary on Irma from weather experts,  not some guy or gal in a suit who has a bachelors in meteorology and a laptop, but people who actually experience weather and predict it through real science with uncanny accuracy.

but more is on the way..

http://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/tropical-storm-maria-threatens-caribbean-as-lee-forms-in-atlantic/ar-AAs1hEi

Three storms are swaggering through the Atlantic, with one already a hurricane and another forecast to strengthen and threaten areas battered by Hurricane Irma last week.

Indeed!

Be vigilant...current models show Lee weakening and not threatening the mainland US, Jose will be a situation for the Northeast, but likely no more than an angry noreaster...Maria is modelling out to move east of the Bahamas, and then its anyones guess...

www.flhurricane.com (forum with many current and retired meteorologists sharing their predictions and observations)
www.windyty.com (animated graphics of the NAM, GFS, and ECM models on an easy to view map with numerous elements on the sidebar to discern specific storm features)
www.wunderground.com (easiest radar interface)

Read my above list of preparedness and live by it best you can...it has served me and mine well.

Cheers!

The last I saw, Maria was on the same path as Irma.  Things can change quickly, so maybe it won't make landfall.  The Golden Girls made Miami look like the ideal retirement area.  No thank you.

Hi Folks,

How is Houston doing now?, we have not seen any coverage since Irma smashed the Caribbean and into Florida - Did FEMA get to work on Houston in time after the storm ? is it getting back to normal ?

Fingers crossed that the other storms don't gather anymore power and miss landfall in the Caribbean / Florida

Maria is still modelled pretty solid to go east of the Bahamas, while Jose will do a loop or two after scraping the east coast and then dissipate out in the Atlantic most likely, Lee is a weak low...not much going on there, but there is another low behind Lee to watch..vigilance is the best tool at this point, use those links I shared and be safe!

Cheers!
