So how long before this seeps into the fresh water used on the west coast?

How long before millions of people in California are drinking and bathing in radioactive water on a daily basis? Maybe its going on now

Or how long before everyone in the world is ingesting this radioactive crap? Frightening stuff

Im interested in this topic as if will affect all of us but I dont have time to read the whole thread as its rather large, just skimmed through it

There should be a worldwide effort to fix this issue or to contain it

Wall Street Journal, July 8, 2013
Fukushima Watch: Tritium Levels Soar on Coast at Fukushima Plant
[...] More than two years after the devastating accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, operator [Tepco] is seeing levels soar of a radioactive element called tritium. The problem spot is on the coastal side of the plant's heavily damaged No. 2 reactor, one of the areas where Tepco regularly monitors groundwater to check for radioactive elements that may have leeched from the plant's partly melted fuel cores and into the environment. Tokyo Electric Power Co. says 2,300 becquerels per liter of tritium was found in seawater sampled off its crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station Wednesday, the highest level recorded since the March 2011 accident.

[...] It is feared that groundwater containing high levels of tritium may be leaking into the sea from the plant's No. 2 reactor building.

Radiation From Fukushima Japan to Seattle

encrypt777
Uploaded on Jun 24, 2011
John King and Arnie Gundersen discuss "hot particles" detected in Seattle and Japan, the cozy relationship between Japanese regulator NISA (Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency) and plant owner TEPCO, and changes at the Fukushima accident site since March. John King and Arnie Gundersen also discuss how TEPCO's acknowledgement today of another error in calculating radiation dose more than doubles the amount of radioactivity to which people in the Northern Hemisphere have been exposed.

There should be a worldwide effort to fix this issue or to contain it

That is the problem..

THERE IS NO FIX to this with our current level of technology

Chernobyl was ONE meltdown away from the oceans so it was possible to build a concrete cover for it. But before they could build a cover 500,000 Red Army soldiers had to remove the hot stuff on the roof by hand wearing only lead plates and going in for brief spurts...

Concrete deteriorates with radiation faster than normal  so it was estimated the life span of that cover would be 25 years. It was up for 50 years before they started building a new one (currently)

The problem is Chernobyl will remain 'hot' for about 100,000 years  but at least it is contained

The new cover was built away from the plant then moved over it on rails to protect workers

However at Fukushima we have THREE full meltdowns  and they are sitting on fractures bedrock right on the ocean so despite what TEPCO is saying, the radiation has been leaking directly in to the ocean via ground water beneath the plants since the beginning  We showed that back at ATS when this started

At this point the Corium is getting deep

This is one of the old graphics  Will better show what I mean

Unlike Chernobyl a cover will not be possible nor help as it is already too late and draining steadily into the oceans  and will also stay hot for about 100,000 years

Until we figure out how to use the radiation DIRECTLY instead of heating water for a glorified STEAM ENGINE we need to stop using nuclear fuel

Japan NEVER had containment. The first reactor was in meltdown EIGHT HOURS after the quake hit. The core was breached BEFORE the tsunami hit

And one look at the pipes scattered like match sticks is poroof that contaimnet was IMPOSSIBLE because TEPCO took a short cut... they eliminated the heat exchanger and fed the 'hot' water from the reactor straight to the turbines.  those scattered pipes WERE the system... Take those out and there is no way to restore cooling or anything

At least with a heat exchanger you only contaminate the reactor area  but take out that heat exchanger and you contaminate the entire plant and turbine room as well

So there is no solution currently   We just suck up those particles and hope we mutate to survive :P

And in the meantime it looks like fish is off the menu.
