Well it all depends on how much money the forum owners have... and how good their lawyers are.  :o

Newspaper Chain’s New Business Plan: Copyright Suits

Quote
Steve Gibson has a plan to save the media world’s financial crisis — and it’s not the iPad.

Borrowing a page from patent trolls, the CEO of fledgling Las Vegas-based Righthaven has begun buying out the copyrights to newspaper content for the sole purpose of suing blogs and websites that re-post those articles without permission. And he says he’s making money.

“We believe it’s the best solution out there,” Gibson says. “Media companies’ assets are very much their copyrights. These companies need to understand and appreciate that those assets have value more than merely the present advertising revenues.”

Quote
Bill Irvine of Phoenix says he is fighting infringement allegations targeting AboveTopSecret.com, the site he controls under The Above Network. The site is accused of infringing a Review-Journal article on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The site is a user-generated discussion on “conspiracies, UFO’s, paranormal, secret societies, political scandals, new world order, terrorism, and dozens of related topics” and gets about 5 million hits monthly, Irvine says.

Righthaven, he says, should have sent him a takedown notice under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, because the article was posted by a user, not the site itself.

So a user, that you have no control over, posts an article from a news source that has such lawyers hired, will sue the owner of the forum/blog/website and will go for an out of court settlement because they know the owner can't afford to fight it, unlike a big one like ATS who have a staff of lawyers

So... when they interviewed some journalists to ask them how much is OK, they said generally 3 paragraphs for a decent size article, or less if it's very small.

This is the coming storm. Associated Press and Reuters already have teams of lawyers randomly searching the net for any violations.

Do You think that these efforts would occur in a society run without the need for money?  Not on Your life.  The author would be flattered that Their work was spread.  And We all would have wider access to information.

Yeah, Let's get free energy OUT THERE!  For anyOne who has not seen My petition... (like there's lots of You!  LOL!) it's linked in My sig.  Spread the link!  Post it widely!  Email it!  Make it happen!

Is this the same Steve Gibson who has the GRC website shields up?

Back in Greece when they had the Library of Alexandria, there were no copyright issues :D

So the PTB fixed that by burning down the library  :o

Yup.  Copyright and money do limit the flow of information.  No need to burn books - just make the information available only for a high price.  That's one reason I offer My stuff for free and even tell People They can claim it as Their own if They choose.  [smile]

Isn't this pretty much SOPA/ACTA ?

Its a good way to stop the flow of information and keep the sheeple fed.

Problem right now is, that well there isn't really an alternative, I have TOR but that's pretty much surfing in DOS command.

It seems like they need to push this quick, for some strange reason lately they have been going full steam ahead on this internet censor crusade.

IF you ask me it feels like they are running on a timetable. Like they  need to Finnish in time.. for something.
And not only the internet...

Very perceptive.  They are running a bit scared.  I note on Twitter, only vapid crap is "trending" yet every other tweet I get says "#NoNATO."  Yeah, We all are talking about Justin <3.  I roll My eyes.

Ah yes the Goode Olde West..

Stage coach robbers, Bank robbers, Gold Claim jumpers, Horse Thieves, Cattle Rustlers

BUT you are missing the POINT here...

Its not about copyright being 'freedom of speech' issue... it's what they can do to a forum if you don't comply with EXISTING LAWS

Freedom of speech has nothing to do with copyright issues. But until the laws are changed, a forum can be shut down if people just post at will.

That is why ATS is so strict on that... and STILL they had to call in the lawyers
